even higher awareness of the dangers of the mullahs' regime.

Nika Shakarami
NCRI - Womens committee - 7 May 2024 - in Podcast - in Women's
News
<<Sexual Assault Systematic to Break Resistant Detainees in Iran
Nika Shakarami was subjected to sexual assault and then murdered
by crushing her head.
The BBC World Service recently uncovered documents revealing a
harrowing incident involving Nika Shakarami, one of the iconic figures
of the 2022 uprising in Iran. It's heart-wrenching to learn that
undercover Revolutionary Guard agents kidnapped Nika, subjected her to
sexual assault, and tragically ended her life by crushing her head
inside a freezer truck. In this episode, we're going to tackle the
disturbing issue of sexual abuse, which has been systematically used by
the clerical regime as a tool to break female political prisoners for
decades. It's a deeply troubling topic, but it's crucial that we shine a
light on these atrocities and work towards justice and accountability.
***
Q: What is the significance of the heart-wrenching documents the
BBC World Service revealed?
First, these jaw-dropping documents are like a neon sign flashing
<no rule of law here!> They scream out about the utter lack of due
process and the sickeningly systematic use of sexual abuse, especially
against women who dare to oppose the regime. These documents also lay
bare the savage behavior of the regime's thugs and their blatant
disregard for the basic human rights of those they detain. And let me
tell you, they also highlight the incredible courage of Iran’s young
women and girls who stand up to the regime's goons and security forces.
It's like they're saying, <You can try to silence us, but we won't back
down.>
Can you picture it? A petite 16-year-old girl, unarmed,
completely outnumbered by three aggressive men!
I can totally relate! I had that exact same thought. It's
incredible how courageous she was, especially with her hands tied behind
her back. She fought with everything she had, body and soul. Can you
believe it? She even managed to kick one of the guards in the face just
as he was about to attack her. Nika was relentless, swearing at them the
whole time, and they couldn't get her to calm down. The regime's
undercover agents were absolutely scared to send her to any detention
center because she was such a firecracker. They were convinced she'd
stir up trouble among the other detainees in any prison. So, they were
headed to Evin Prison, and that's when things took a horrifying turn.
They just kept on hitting her with batons and Tasers until she couldn't
hold on any longer, and she passed away in that truck not long after
they took her into custody>>

<<Iranian Court Sentences Political Prisoner Mahmoud Mehrabi to
Death

Maleki Qorbani
NCRI - Womens committee - 5 may 2024 - in Articles - in Women's
News
<<Rising Rates of Suicides Among Female Doctors in Iran
A staggering 130% increase in suicides among female doctors
In recent years, Iran has witnessed a distressing surge in the
rates of suicides among medical professionals, particularly female
doctors. The gravity of this issue poses a significant threat to the
stability of Iran's healthcare system. According to a report by Donya-e
Eqtesad, there has been a staggering 130% increase in suicides among
female doctors and 40% in male doctors' suicides. Donya-e Eqtesad also
mentioned that the suicide of doctors had increased fivefold in the last
few years. Before this in January, the state-run Etemad daily wrote in a
report that in 10 months, 16 medical assistants committed suicide.
Let's explore the contributing factors:

Dr. Samira Al-e Saeed was the mother of one child.
Working Conditions and Stress
Iranian doctors, especially resident physicians, grapple with
grueling working conditions. Extended shifts, often exceeding 30 hours,
take a toll on their physical and mental well-being. Resident doctors
face inadequate compensation, receiving meager monthly salaries ranging
from 80 million to 110 million rials (approximately $125 to $172). The
demanding residency period (three to five years) exacerbates stress,
exhaustion, and burnout.
Financial Strain
Delayed payments and restrictions on practicing medicine outside
the hospital during residency contribute to financial strain. Many
doctors take on secondary jobs to make ends meet, further adding to
their stress.
Lack of Mental Health Support
Despite a high prevalence of depression among resident doctors
(25% in Tehran), mental health services remain inadequate. Advocates
emphasize the need for better support, including insurance coverage,
reduced excessive shifts, and accessible mental health resources.
Social Status and Respect
Historically, doctors in Iran held esteemed social positions.
However, recent changes have eroded their status. Instances of
disrespect from supervisors, mistreatment, and humiliation contribute to
feelings of hopelessness.

Dr. Parastoo Bakhshi
Suicides among female doctors in Iran
Resident doctors have turned to social media to raise awareness
about their plight. They share stories of colleagues who have tragically
taken their own lives. The most recent was the plight of three female
doctors who committed suicide including a young cardiologist in late
March and two other doctors in April. On March 23, only four days after
Nowruz, cardiologist Parastoo Bakhshi committed suicide in Delfan city
in the western province of Lorestan. She had a child. On April 26,
rheumatologist Samira Al-e Saeedi, 35, who had graduated with honors
from the Tehran University of Medical Sciences, committed suicide due to
work pressure. The day before her suicide, she had told the other
residents of her plan to commit suicide with medication but was not
taken seriously. On April 30, Zahra Maleki Ghorbani, 28, a female doctor
from the port city of Jask in the southern province of Hormozgan,
committed suicide. According to some users of social networks, Dr. Leila
Modarres Enshaii also committed suicide in recent weeks, but there is no
information about her details and the reason for her suicide.

Dr. Zahra Maleki
Is there an end to these suicides?
These examples are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to
suicides among female doctors. The alarming increase in the number of
medical staff suicides in Iran was previously reflected in the
prestigious Lancet medical journal under the title <Iranian medic
suicides spark criticism of working conditions.> Iran's Association of
Psychiatrists considers the frequency of suicides among female doctors
to be several times higher than in the entire population of the country.
The Association submitted two letters to the Minister of Health and
Medical Education but did not receive a response. In this report, the
head of the Iranian Psychiatrists' Association accused the Ministry of
Health of hiding the exact statistics of suicides among Iran's medical
staff. Of course, one should not expect the regime's officials to make
such statistics public. As far as this regime and its officials are
concerned, they neither want nor can solve Iran's problems. The only
solution to the problems of Iranian women, including female doctors and
medical staff, is regime change and the overthrow of the misogynist,
inhumane regime.>>

supporters of the armed group Jaish al-Adl in the village of Pashamag.

<<Regime suspends and jails female university students for their
activities
The Iranian regime continues to suspend and jail students because
of their political and social activities, the most recent cases being
Afarin Najafizadeh and Motahareh Gouneii. Mechanical engineering student
Afarin Najafizadeh suspended from university. The Disciplinary Appeals
Committee sentenced Afarin Najafizadeh, a mechanical engineering student
at Tehran’s University of Science and Technology, to a half-year
suspension from the university. <The case was filed one day after I
participated in the Student's Day press conference and after reports
were written by Sharq, Etemad, Emtedad, Ensaf dailies, among others, on
December 5, 2022,> Afarin wrote in a social media post. <In the three
cases for which I was summoned to the disciplinary committee, the
university's security department repeatedly referred to my 'establishing
the working group to defend the rights of the University of Science and
Technology students' as a prelude to their complaint, and this time as a
hypothetical violation, they also referred to an interview I had last
year with the Ham-Mihan newspaper, as the secretary of the suspended
(student) association.>
Pointing out that this ruling was issued for reasons such as
posting pictures from her travels or even pictures taken in her home,
she said that her student newsletter was canceled and that she was
banned from entering the university without receiving any notification.
Motahareh Gouneii transferred to the women's ward of Evin Prison
According to other reports, suspended student Motahareh Gouneii
was transferred to the women's ward of Tehran's Evin Prison following
her arrest.
Motahareh Gouneii, a suspended Tehran University dental student
and the former political secretary of Tehran University's Islamic
Student Association, was arrested and transferred to Evin prison on
Wednesday, May 1, after being summoned via phone by the IRGC
intelligence Department. There is still no information on why she is
being charged.
Three days ago, Ms. Gouneii, together with another student
activist, held a sit-in outside Tehran's Music House for a few hours to
protest the death sentence for rapper Toomaj Salehi. She has been under
pressure by security agencies since the sit-in. Motahareh said she was
summoned by the IRGC's Sarullah Corps, who were posing as the Public

including <Payer Bemini Kurdstanehgam> (Rise proud, my Kurdistan),
during the Nawroz ceremony in Gilan-e Gharb, defying security threats.
The event attracted over 30,000 attendees. Previously, Jafari had
released Kurdish songs on occasions such as International Women's Day,
International Mother Language Day, Nawroz, and in support of the Afrin
resistance. It is noteworthy that besides his musical activism, Bardin
Jafari has been actively involved in civil initiatives, prominently
contributing to fundraising efforts for those affected by the Sarpol-e
Zahab earthquake and the Lorestan flood. This incident adds to a growing
number of arrests by Iranian security institutions, with at least 32
Kurdish individuals detained over the past month for their involvement
in Nawroz ceremonies in cities including Karzan, Abdanan, Malekshahi,
Ilam, Gilan-e Gharib, Bukan, Sanandaj, Piranshahr, Miandoab, and
Oshnovieh. Additionally, hundreds of others have been summoned for
interrogation.>>

<<Tehran University Student's Suicide Highlights Mental Health
Crisis
Saeed Mousanejad, a master's student entering his first year at
Tehran University's Faculty of Social Sciences, tragically took his own
life. His body was discovered in his dorm room on the university campus
on Thursday evening. The Faculty of Social Sciences' public relations
office confirmed Mousanejad's death and expressed condolences to his
family and fellow students. Mousanejad's death is part of a disturbing
trend of suicides among Iranian students. In November 2023, the head of
the Iranian Psychiatrists' Scientific Association reported that 16
medical residents had committed suicide within the past year. In recent
weeks, news outlets have reported the suicides of at least two doctors
in Tehran and Jask, sparking public outcry and discussion on social
media.>>
