Nasim Gholami Simiyari
NCRI - Womens committee - 17 may 2024 - in Women's News
<<Nasim Gholami Simiyari illegally detained for one year in limbo
Last year, on May 18, 2023, agents from the IRGC Intelligence
arrested Nasim Gholami Simiyari in one of Tehran's streets. They took
her immediately to the IRGC's Ward 1A and interrogated her in solitary
confinement. After two months, she was transferred to Ward 2A and
eventually sent to the women's ward of Evin Prison on September 26,
2023. She was subjected to mental and physical torture during the early
months of arrest and forced to make televised confessions against
herself. The confessions, dictated by her interrogator, are now being
used against her. After five months, she was arraigned on her charges at
the courthouse of Evin Prison. She was accused of <assembly and
collusion against national security,> <propaganda against the state,>
and <Bagh-ye (i.e. armed rebellion).> Nasim Gholami Simiyari was born on
July 13, 1988. Her status remains undecided after one year in detention.
Detaining prisoners for lengthy periods under undecided conditions is a
common practice under the clerical regime, but illegal according to the
regime's laws.>>

Zahra Shafiei Dehaghani
Iranwire - 17 May 2024
<<Brain Surgery for Iranian Activist: Blood Clots and Tumor
Following Arrest Over Headscarf
Zahra Shafiei Dehaghani, a writer, director, and civil activist,
suffered brain injuries due to assaults during her arrest and was
hospitalized last Friday. Following brain surgery, she was discharged on
Tuesday. She was arrested on September 15, 2023, and charged with
<propaganda against the Islamic Republic> and <assembly and collusion to
disrupt national security.> These charges, combined with previous cases
related to her civil and human rights activities, resulted in a sentence
of 9 years and 6 months in prison, along with a fine. During her arrest,
she sustained severe physical injuries. Dehaghani has created several
documentaries and animations focusing on fundamental human rights. In
2018, she directed <Advanced Cancer,> a documentary about the conditions
of women prisoners in Qarchak prison. IranWire interviewed sources close
to her family and one of her lawyers handling her case to discuss her
current situation. On September 15, 2023, Dehaghani was arrested on
Elkhebal Street for not wearing a headscarf. A source close to her
family explained to IranWire that the city centre was under martial law
to instil fear following protests on the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's
death.

Jina Amini
Officers indiscriminately arrested people to spread panic.
Dehaghani's family, upon learning of her arrest, encountered many others
at the detention centre whose loved ones had also been detained
arbitrarily. Due to her prior civil activities and related cases, she
was first transferred to Qarchak Prison and then, a few days later, to
the women's ward of Evin Prison. In an October 2 phone call from Qarchak
Prison, Dehaghani described her arrest and the assault by security
agents. She recounted how, after getting off the Valiasr metro, she
found the street unusually deserted. While heading towards Azadi Street,
some elderly people warned her about the officers arresting everyone in
sight. On Shirin France Street, she encountered numerous women in <black
chador, military uniforms, and black masks,> along with men in <military
uniforms with no names> and <plainclothes with black shirts and pants.>
They arrested her with profanity and beatings. <They beat me hard and in
a very bad and strange way. They tied my hands behind my back and hit me
on the head and face. One of the women kicked me hard in the back, and
then the men in plain clothes came and pushed me into the van. They took
a bunch of girls and boys, the girls, all wearing hijabs and cloaks,
were sitting and crying, asking what they had done to deserve this. When
the boys tried to defend the girls, they were beaten as well.> This
testimony highlights the severe and indiscriminate nature of the arrests
and the physical abuse suffered by detainees, reflecting the broader
context of repression during that period.
According to a person close to Dehaghani's family, medical
examinations revealed that the blows she received to her head during her
arrest caused blood clots in three areas of her brain. These clots led
to increased blood pressure, resulting in a stroke, and have affected
her vision and balance.
Despite these serious health issues, she was subjected to
intensive interrogations for hours during the first month of her
imprisonment. Saeed Dehghan, one of Zahra's lawyers handling the
international aspects of her case, described these actions as criminal.
He told IranWire: <In such cases, the arrested person should file a
complaint against the arresting officers, interrogators, and judicial
officers. However, where to file the complaint depends on which agency
the detainers, interrogators, and officers work under. Some are
military, and some are not.>
She was released on bail in November last year.
A source close to her family noted: <When she was released on
bail, we already knew her blood pressure was high, and she had been
given blood pressure medication in prison. Each time her blood pressure
was checked, it was over 18, and once it had risen to 21, which is
extremely dangerous. They had given her pills, but we also noticed she
had a slight stutter, lacked balance, and complained of decreased
vision.>
Her family consulted several doctors, including neurologists, for
further health evaluations.
<The neurologist told us that due to the impact, clots had formed
in three areas of her head, causing her blood pressure to rise and
resulting in a stroke. The symptoms of this condition include decreased
vision, imbalance in walking, and other related issues,> explained the
source. Doctors are conducting multiple tests, including scans and MRIs,
to further investigate her brain condition. <In one of her brain images,
aside from the three clots believed to be caused by the head injury, a
tumour was found on the other side of her brain,> the source added. The
neurosurgeon diagnosed Dehaghani with a brain meningioma tumour, which
often remains asymptomatic for years and is typically discovered
incidentally during scans for other issues, such as head trauma—exactly
how her tumour was found. She was discharged from the hospital on
Tuesday a few days after undergoing brain surgery. A person close to
Dehaghani's family emphasized that all her medical care was conducted in
approved medical centres and by specialists endorsed by forensic
medicine. This ensures that they can advocate for her inability to
tolerate imprisonment. Dehaghani has been sentenced to 9 years and 6
months in prison and fined for charges including collusion, propaganda,
and various civil activities. Saeed Dehghan, her lawyer, highlights
their current objective, to halt the execution of her sentence or modify
the punishment in light of her health condition.
This is based on Article 502 of the Criminal Procedure Law.
Article 502 states that if a convicted person has a physical or
mental illness that worsens with imprisonment or delays recovery, the
judge can postpone the punishment upon receiving a forensic medical
opinion. If recovery is unlikely, especially in suspended verdicts, the
judge can alter the punishment to something suitable for the illness and
the crime, providing a final decision to the issuing authority. If an
illness arises during imprisonment requiring immediate suspension of the
punishment, the judge must act accordingly.>>

<<Turkish Activist Arrested in Iran for Social Media Post on
President Raisi's Fatal Helicopter Crash
A Turkish individual identified as Akbar Yousefi from Malekan,
East Azerbaijan Province, was arrested by the security forces of the
Islamic Republic of Iran after publishing a post about the helicopter
crash involving President Ebrahim Raisi and his diplomatic corps.
According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human
Rights, on May 20, 2024, officers from the Intelligence Department
raided the private residence of Akbar Yousefi, a Turkish social activist
from Malekan, and violently detained him. Sources close to Yousefi's
family stated that he was arrested and taken to the Malekan Intelligence
Detention Center after posting on his Instagram account about the recent
helicopter crash that resulted in the deaths of President Ebrahim Raisi
and other high-ranking officials.
As of the time of this report, no specific charges have been
brought against Yousefi.
It is noteworthy that Yousefi had previously been arrested by
Iranian security agencies during the Woman, Life, Freedom (Jin, Jiyan,
Azadi) movement. The helicopter carrying President Ebrahim Raisi crashed
on Sunday, May 19, 2024, in the border highlands of Iran and Azerbaijan,
resulting in his death. Alongside President Raisi, Hossein

Al Jazeera - 19 May 2024 - by Al Jazeera staff
<<President Raisi's helicopter crashes in Iran: What we know so
far
A helicopter carrying Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi and the
foreign minister crashed while travelling back from East Azerbaijan.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has yet to be found, despite conflicting
reports that the location where his helicopter went down had been found.
But those reports were quickly dismissed by the Iranian Red Crescent and
the world continues watching Iranian emergency crews searching for Raisi
in a remote area near Jolfa in Iran's East Azerbaijan province where his
helicopter went down, while the rest of the convoy continued. Raisi was
returning from Iran's border with Azerbaijan, where he and the
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev inaugurated a cooperative dam
project, the latest sign of warming relations between the two countries.
Twenty rescue teams as well as an unknown number drones have been sent
to the area where the helicopter came down.
Information is slowly emerging on this incident, but here is what
we know so far.
What happened?
Reports of a helicopter in the president’s convoy crashing first
circulated on social media and were quickly picked up by local media. An
initial report by the state-linked Mehr news website said Raisi had
opted to travel to Tabriz by car due to the foggy weather conditions,
and that he was safe.
The news was subsequently taken down after state television
confirmed that the missing helicopter was carrying Raisi and the other
officials. State television said the helicopter suffered a <hard
landing>.
Who was in the helicopter?
Travelling with Ebrahim Raisi were Iran's Foreign Minister
Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran's East Azerbaijan Province Governor Malek
Rahmati, and Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, the representative of
Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to East Azerbaijan, according to
state media.
Did all three helicopters disappear?
No, two of the three helicopters in the president's convoy made
it back safely to the city of Tabriz. Energy Minister Ali Akbar
Mehrabian and Housing and Transportation Minister Mehrdad Bazrpash were
in the helicopters that made it back safely.
What's the problem? Why can't they find the helicopter
passengers?
Rescuers were attempting to reach the site, state TV said,
stating that in addition to tens of rescue crews, there were several
ambulances and drones deployed in the search. However, all efforts have
been hampered by poor weather conditions, with heavy rain and fog
reported with some wind. News agency IRNA said the area is a <forest>
that is difficult to access.
How are people feeling? What are they saying?
After the news of President Raisi's helicopter disappearing was
confirmed, calls went out for Iranians to pray for his safety and the
safety of the people with him in the aircraft. The government has not
made many statements as there are still many details that are not clear.
Was something wrong with his helicopter?
There is still no confirmation on what type of helicopters were
carrying Raisi and his entourage. They could have been army helicopters
or Red Crescent aircraft. Iran operates a range of helicopters, but many
date back to before the country's 1979 Islamic revolution. Due to the
sanctions and financial constraints, Iran has had difficulties
purchasing spare parts, making maintenance a challenge.
Who's in charge in Iran while the president is missing?
Vice President Mohammad Mokhber, 69, will assume power in Raisi's
absence or while he recovers, should that be needed. The head of the
trustees charged with overseeing the execution of Ayatollah Khamenei's
orders since 2007, Mokhber holds a PhD in international law.>>

<<Imprisoned Without Trial, Two Iranian Women Start Hunger Strike
Two women have begun a hunger strike in Tehran's Evin Prison to
protest their prolonged detention without trial and harsh treatment by
authorities.
One of the women, Varisheh Moradi, initially detained in Sanandaj
on August 1, 2023, was transferred to Evin Prison. She was held
incommunicado in Ward 209, a section controlled by the Iranian Ministry
of Intelligence. After a four-month interrogation period, she was moved
to the general Women's Ward in December 2023. However, on May 14, Moradi
was abruptly transferred back to Ward 209 and banned from contacting her
family by Judge Abolqasem Salavati, according to the HRANA human rights
website. The other prisoner, Pakhshan Azizi, a resident of Mahabad, was
arrested in Tehran on August 4, 2023. Like Moradi, Azizi was held in
Ward 209 for four months before being transferred to the Women's Ward.
Both women face charges related to political activities. Moradi is
charged with <armed rebellion,> while Azizi is accused of <membership in
anti-regime groups.>
However, neither has had a proper court hearing due to
unspecified reasons. A source close to the families told HRANA that the
hunger strike is a last resort in response to the deteriorating
conditions of their detention. The source expressed concern for Moradi
and Azizi's health and well-being, highlighting the lack of transparency

<<Iran's Interior Minister Defends Violent Crackdown on Women
Interior Minister of the Islamic Republic has defended his
forces' behavior towards women amid an intensified crackdown. A video
circulating online showing the violent arrest of a woman by Iranian
police has sparked outrage and renewed criticism of the country's
mandatory hijab laws. Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi defended the police
force's actions while acknowledging that the video <did not accurately
portray the situation.> The video shows officers bundling a woman into a
morality police van, a vehicle used to detain women deemed to be
improperly veiled. Despite the video, Vahidi claimed the police acted
<according to the rules of procedure.> He accused online media of
misrepresenting the event and called for <preventing the intersection
and deviation of issues.> The police information center admitted the
officer's actions were <illegal and unethical,> but still urged citizens
to <obey the law and the order of arrest.> However, lawyer Ali
Mojtahedzadeh challenged the notion of it being an isolated incident. He
argued the <repetition and frequency> of such violence suggests a
systemic problem, not individual mistakes. Mojtahedzadeh warned that
continued violence could lead to <a violent confrontation between
citizens and the police.> The latest enforcement of severe measures
began on April 13, just hours before Iran launched hundreds of suicide
drones and missiles at Israel. Across Iran, there have been numerous
reports of women being arrested and subjected to the use of force due to
perceived violations of mandatory dress codes. Users across social
networks are participating in a spontaneous campaign using the hashtag
<war against women> to document their experiences and observations
regarding the government's crackdown on the opponents of mandatory hijab.
Reports have surfaced detailing the use of repressive tactics,
particularly on female students in various universities. Moreover,
pressure has also been mounting on civil activists, political
dissenters, women political prisoners, and cultural figures. Several
videos have shown officials surveilling the streets and looking for
women in breach of the Islamic Republic's dress code laws.
The new crackdown comes almost two years after the death in
custody of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for her alleged <improper>
hijab.

Jina Amini
The death of 22-year-old Amini unleashed months of mass protests
across Iran and marked the biggest challenge to Iran's clerical leaders
since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.>>

<<Nobel Peace Laureates Urge Global Action Against Iran's
Executions of Activists
Four Nobel Peace Prize winners have asked the international
community to put pressure on the Islamic Republic to stop the arrest,
imprisonment, and execution of activists. In a statement, Nobel
laureates Shirin Ebadi, Judy Williams, Tawakkol Karman, and Leymah
Gbowee also called for the <Iranian government to be held accountable>
for using <execution to intimidate the opposition.> Human rights, civil,
and political activists believe that the death penalty in Iran has never
been issued and implemented with the goal of crime prevention and has
always been a tool in the hands of the Islamic Republic to create terror
in society. The four Nobel Peace Prize winners said that amid the
escalation of conflicts in the Middle East, Iran has <intensified> the
use of the death penalty against political and human rights activists
and opponents of the Islamic Republic. <Now, under the growing shadow of
war, the use of execution as a tool to silence the opposition and spread
fear has grown increasingly,> they wrote in a joint statement on
Wednesday. <There is a gender apartheid system in Iran, which, in
addition to imprisonment, mistreatment, and execution of opponents of
the government, especially affects women. The systematic violation of
human rights and the clear disregard for dignity and human rights
require a decisive international response,> they added. The Nobel
laureates asked the international community to force the Islamic
Republic to <stop the arrest and execution of activists and work towards
the freedom of all political prisoners.> According to a report by
Amnesty International, Iran has reached its highest level of death
sentence executions in the last eight years, with the judiciary of the
Islamic Republic executing 853 people in 2023 alone. The report
indicates that 481 executions, more than half of the total, were related
to drug crimes. This marks an 89 percent rise in death penalties for
drug-related offenses compared to 2022, when 255 people were executed.
The latest numbers also show a staggering 264 percent increase compared
to 2021, when 132 individuals faced execution on similar charges.>>
