Shahabi and his mother
Iranwire - October 10, 2024 - by Javad Motevali
Stirring the Pot of Change: Shahabi's Fight for Justice
A man, his back turned to the camera, stirs a bubbling cauldron of ripe
tomatoes over an open flame. Though his face is not visible, his
identity is clear to those who follow the struggle for workers' rights
in Iran. He is Reza Shahabi, a prominent figure in the country's labor
movement. A former bus driver for the Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company,
Shahabi has spent much of the past decade behind bars. His advocacy for
fair wages, better working conditions, and involvement with labor unions
has earned him the ire of Iranian authorities, leading to repeated
arrests and imprisonment.
Now, however, Shahabi is working alongside his wife to produce tomato
paste, a home-based business she started to support their family while
he was incarcerated. Life's demands, from daily necessities to
unforeseen expenses, can be challenging, especially for a married couple
with children.
For families like Shahabi's, when one partner is imprisoned for their
activism, the burden of providing falls solely on the other. It's a
struggle that many in Iran face in the pursuit of justice and equality.
From Prison to Pantry
Shahabi recounts the harrowing events that led to his family's
entrepreneurial venture. He says, "In 2009, while working at the Bus
Company, I was arrested for my involvement in union activities and
advocacy for a decent life. Based on a fabricated case, I was imprisoned
for seven and a half years. At that time, our family's earnings came
from my salary, barely sufficient to meet our basic needs. We protested
at the Bus Company for a living wage that could support a family of
four." He adds, "After my arrest, our family's income was completely cut
off. Our social security insurance and other benefits were terminated.
My wife felt immense pressure to provide for our family with two
children, school expenses, rent, and utility bills to cover." The loss
of his income and the family's subsequent hardships forced his wife,
Robabeh, to turn to her culinary skills. "While friends offered support,
it was insufficient to cover expenses consistently. Recognizing their
expertise in making pickles and other preserved foods, my wife and her
mother, who are from Hamadan, decided to start a business producing and
selling these products." Friends who visited the family during Shahabi's
imprisonment were impressed by the quality of her products and
encouraged her to sell them. As demand grew, Robabeh expanded her
offerings to include dried vegetables, fried onions, lemon juice, and
vinegar. Shahabi believes that his wife's business not only provided
income but also sent a powerful message. In the face of opposition from
employers and authorities, many women are discouraged from supporting
their husbands' union activities. They are often warned about the
potential consequences, such as imprisonment and financial hardship. "My
wife defied this societal pressure and demonstrated that it is possible
to stand up for one's beliefs without sacrificing one's livelihood. As
the saying goes, 'When one door closes, another opens,'" he says.
Robabeh stood on her own feet and refused to back down. "Even as we
continue the fight for our rights and a better life, we've shown that
it's possible to support ourselves through entrepreneurship."
A Taste of Freedom and Redemption
With Shahabi's release, the couple expanded their business. He
elaborates, "We added organic tomatoes from our village of Zakariya to
make tomato paste. We also incorporated sour grape juice and dried
vegetables from Azerbaijan, known for their exceptional quality and
unique flavor." Together, they transformed their kitchen into a
small-scale production facility, using traditional methods like
wood-fired pots to cook their tomato paste. Their hard work paid off as
their homemade goods gained popularity. "Our products now offer a
diverse range, and we have a loyal customer base," Shahabi adds.
The Fate of Legal Cases
In 2010, he was dismissed from the Bus Company for the second time. "My
commitment to the union and legal rights led to my arrest on the streets
in June 2010, which resulted in the termination of my salary and
insurance benefits." Years passed, and Shahabi's resolution remained
undeterred. He revealed, "In 2017, I contacted the Ministry of Labor and
the Bus Company regarding my dismissal. They claimed that I had not been
fired and that reinstatement was pending approval from the Ministry of
Intelligence." Refusing to accept this unsatisfactory response, Shahabi
demanded a formal dismissal order so he could pursue legal action. Even
international organizations took notice of Shahabi's situation.
"Representatives from the International Labor Organization inquired
about my case with the Minister of Labor, questioning why I had not been
reinstated. Unfortunately, our efforts to obtain justice were
unsuccessful."
A Struggle for Home
Reza Shahabi's struggles extended beyond his dismissal from the Bus
Company. While he was imprisoned, his wife, Robabeh, faced immense
hardship in securing a loan of eleven million and five hundred thousand
tomans. She submitted the funds to the Bus Company cooperative in 2011,
hoping to secure a company-owned apartment. "Unfortunately, to this day,
they have held onto our money, and no one has been held accountable. I
have been wrongfully removed from the housing program, despite my
previous employment." The Bus Company claims Shahabi is ineligible for
housing due to unemployment, but he remains determined to pursue this
matter and seek a resolution. "We have been renting our current home for
many years and live in difficult conditions. Security agents in the
media produce various programs and documentaries to discredit workers.
The media frequently spreads misinformation about me, falsely claiming I
am not a worker or live in a high-rise apartment." He adds, "Despite
these challenges, with the support of my wife, family, and friends, we
are managing our food business. I remain determined to pursue my
reinstatement at the Bus Company."
A Symbol of Resistance
Shahabi, a tireless advocate for workers' rights in Iran, faced yet
another arrest in 2022 due to his connections with the French workers'
union. During his detention, Shahabi emphasized the importance of
international labor solidarity. "It doesn't matter whether the union is
Iranian or foreign. We are all members of the International Labor
Organization. As a signatory to this organization, the Islamic Republic
is obligated to uphold international labor laws and conventions."
Shahabi was released from prison on September 1, after his sentence was
reduced under a pardon directive issued in 2022.
