Iranwire - October 16, 2024 - by Tara Roshani
<<Living Under the Shadow of War: Iranian Citizens Share Their Fears and
Hopes
Tehran - Iranian citizens are worried about Israel's response and the
possibility of an all-out war after the Islamic Republic launched nearly
200 missiles at Israel. More than two weeks have passed since the
strikes, and while some citizens believe the threat of war has subsided,
not everyone shares this view. Mansoureh works at the Ministry of
Economy and Finance. She believes the threat of war is still very real:
"Ever since Israel assassinated Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, in
Iran, the shadow of war has loomed heavily over the people. Iran's
missile strikes against Israel fanned the flames, and now it's only a
matter of time before it escalates. An air and missile war is
inevitable. Israel is waiting for things to calm down before surprising
the Iranian government again. They will undoubtedly target military,
nuclear, and political sites." Mansoureh is thinking of leaving Iran.
"Two months ago, I applied for a visitor visa to Canada. As soon as I
get it, I'm leaving Iran and never coming back. The black cloud of war
is always hanging over this country. I really can't bear the stress and
fear of war anymore. I still haven't forgotten the terror of the air
raid sirens during the Iran-Iraq war and the bombs that landed near our
house and school." However, as time passes since the missile strikes on
October 1, the likelihood of war seems to be fading in people's
conversations. An example of this can be heard in the exchange between a
taxi driver on the Vanak-Tajrish route and the female passenger sitting
in the front seat. The driver says: "Ma'am, I wish a war would happen so
things could finally be settled. This is no life we're living. From
morning till night, I drive passengers around these crowded streets of
Tehran in the heat of summer and the cold of winter, but I'm always
struggling and never get ahead in life. Maybe a war would at least get
rid of these Mullahs and improve our situation. We would either die and
be freed from this miserable life, or we'd finally be saved." But the
passenger replies: "God forbid war happens. War would turn Iran into
another Iraq or Syria, and the country would be divided. Each part would
end up in the hands of a different group, and then there would be no
Iran left. We, the generation born in the 70s and 80s, are already a
lost generation. God forbid another war breaks out and things get even
worse for us. We’ve experienced the Iran-Iraq war, but this one would be
very different. This would be a full-on missile war." Mona and her two
colleagues, who teach at a language school, also discuss the possibility
of war or whether the danger has passed during the break between
classes.
Mona says: "I still think a war could happen, and Israel might at least
attack the nuclear facilities." However, her two colleagues disagree,
saying: "There's not going to be any war. It's all political games,
fear-mongering, and a show of strength." Taraneh, one of the two
language teachers, adds: "The threat of war has passed, but even if
Israel launches a missile at Iran, it won't land on ordinary people. Not
only will it not destroy our lives, but it might even lead to the fall
of the regime. If that happens, I’ll be praying for a victory for the
other side and the liberation of the Iranian people. I'll do anything I
can to help because so far, these nuclear facilities have only brought
us sanctions and made life harder." Keyvan, the other teacher, says:
"This is all just rhetoric. The U.S. won't allow Israel to start a war
because of the upcoming elections, and the UK, which is with Iran, is
the one guiding these Mullahs. So, a war was never supposed to happen,
and it won’t. The rumors of a potential war only serve to boost sales
for American and European arms manufacturers, while Arab countries, and
even Iran, are being milked for money." Among shopkeepers and market
traders, similar discussions occasionally arise. Mohammad Javad, who
works at a real estate agency, finds the idea of a war between Iran and
Israel highly unlikely and says: "It's all a game. Representatives from
both sides have met many times and had dinner together. These displays
of aggression are just for the public, but behind the scenes, the
Israelis support the Mullahs and want to preserve their regime. They
just don't want Iran to become too powerful or pose a challenge. Rest
assured, no war is going to happen." Haj Sadegh, a veteran of the
Iran-Iraq war and an employee at a government office, also dismisses the
possibility of a war and believes Israel is not capable of such a thing.
He says: "Israel doesn't have the courage to attack Iran. The Zionist
leaders know very well that they have no chance of victory against the
people of Iran. My comrades and I are ready, just as we fought Iraq for
eight years, to go to the front lines and fight against Israel if
necessary." However, he has his critics, like Arman, a young student who
says: "The government would have to be very foolish to start a war. I
read a tweet that said, 'Do you dare give guns to the youth?' Who would
actually fight for them? They think that, like the war with Iraq, young
people will rush to the front lines and fight. That's not going to
happen this time." For Omid, who traveled halfway across the world and
came to Iran three weeks ago to visit his family, the potential danger
of war and the unstable skies over Iran mean something else. According
to his return flight ticket, he was supposed to leave for Istanbul five
days ago and from there head to the UK. But now Turkish Airlines has
canceled all its flights to Iran, and it’s unclear when this situation
will end.
He says: "I took a two-week leave, and now I’ve been stuck in Iran for
over three weeks. My work and life are up in the air, and no
international flights are heading to Turkey or Europe. This is yet
another 'blessing' of the authorities' adventures, making life
unbearable for ordinary people and making stress a permanent guest in
their lives." >>
