<<UN experts demand Iran revoke death sentence for activist Pakhshan
Azizi
UN human rights experts have condemned the Iranian Supreme Court's
decision to uphold the death sentence of Kurdish activist Pakhshan Azizi,
urging the authorities to revoke her "arbitrary" sentence based on
confessions under torture, and ensure a fair trial. They also
highlighted the increased targeting of Kurdish women activists in the
country, calling it part of a wider pattern of persecution against
minority women in Iran.
Independent United Nations human rights experts have expressed grave
concern over the Iranian Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the death
sentence of Kurdish activist Pakhshan Azizi. The experts called on the
Iranian authorities to immediately revoke the sentence, investigate
allegations of torture during detention and ensure a fair trial. They
also stressed the need to end the harassment of women activists and
protect the fundamental rights of all individuals, regardless of their
political beliefs or ethnicity. “The use of torture to extract
confessions and the denial of fair trial rights render the death
sentence against Ms. Azizi arbitrary in nature,” the Special Rapporteurs
and Working Groups appointed by the UN’s Human Rights Council warned.
“Her arrest and sentencing appear to be directly related to her
legitimate work as a social worker, particularly her support for
refugees in Iraq and Syria.” “The charges against Ms. Pakhshan Azizi do
not meet the threshold of ‘most serious crimes’ required by
international law for the death penalty,” the experts explained. “Her
death sentence constitutes a serious violation of international human
rights law.” Azizi, a prominent defender of refugees, was arrested by
Iranian intelligence in Tehran on 4 August 2023 and held in solitary
confinement for five months before being sentenced to death for alleged
armed rebellion against the state and membership of opposition groups.
She was also given a four-year prison sentence for alleged ties to the
Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK). Reports have raised concerns about
severe torture she endured while in solitary confinement at Evin Prison,
as well as the denial of family visits and legal representation. “We are
deeply concerned by the specific targeting of Kurdish women activists
with politically motivated charges,” the experts added. “This
prosecution reflects the heightened persecution of minority women
activists in Iran and the ongoing efforts to silence them by creating a
climate of fear.”>>

Sharifeh Mohammadi
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - February 13, 2025
<<Sharifeh Mohammadi Sentenced to Death Again
Sharifeh Mohammadi, a Turkish labor activist, and political prisoner
detained in Lakan Prison, Rasht, has once again been sentenced to death
by the judicial system of the Islamic Republic of Iran. According to a
report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Branch Two
of the Rasht Revolutionary Court has issued a second death sentence
against Mohammadi. She had previously been sentenced to death by Branch
One of the Rasht Revolutionary Court, but that ruling was overturned by
the Supreme Court in October 2024 and referred to a parallel court for
reconsideration.
A statement published by Sharifeh Mohammadi’s campaign confirmed that
the new death sentence was issued by Mohammad Ali Darvish-Goftar, the
head of Branch Two of the Rasht Revolutionary Court. Notably, he is the
son of Ahmad Darvish-Goftar, the judge of Branch One of the same court,
who had previously sentenced her to death. Mohammadi, a labor activist
from Rasht, was originally sentenced to death in July 2024 by Branch One
of the Rasht Revolutionary Court, presided over by Ahmad Darvish-Goftar
and Mehdi Rasekhi. She was convicted on charges of “Baghi” (armed
rebellion) due to her membership in the Coordination Committee for
Forming Labor Organizations and the court’s claim of “proximity of this
organization to the Komala Party.” The ruling cited Articles 211 and 287
of the Islamic Penal Code (2013) as the legal basis for the death
sentence. Previously, Hengaw had reviewed and published a copy of
Mohammadi’s verdict, which explicitly stated: “The intelligence agencies
are the sole authority in identifying members of opposition groups, and
all reports from the Intelligence Department of Gilan Province, as well
as Kurdistan Province, are attached to the case file. The defendant has
been identified as a member of the Komala Party and the Coordination
Committee.” This statement clearly demonstrates the lack of independence
within the Iranian judiciary and highlights the direct interference of
security agencies in judicial proceedings. In October 2024, the Supreme
Court overturned the death sentence and referred the case to a parallel
court for retrial. Sharifeh Mohammadi’s trial session took place on
Saturday, June 8, 2024, in Branch One of the Rasht Revolutionary Court.
She had previously been subjected to psychological and physical pressure
by interrogators at the Sanandaj Intelligence Department in an attempt
to extract a forced confession. On Tuesday, December 5, 2023, agents of
the Intelligence Department forcibly arrested Mohammadi at her home in
Rasht. Over the past 15 months, she has been held in multiple facilities,
including Sanandaj Central Prison, Lakan Prison in Rasht, and the
Intelligence Detention Centers in both cities.

Intensify Crackdown on Protests in Dehdasht
Iranwire - February 14, 2025 - by Roghayeh Rezaei
<<Security Forces Intensify Crackdown on Protests in Dehdasht
Security forces have intensified their presence in Dehdasht and Bahmai,
two cities in Iran’s Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province. The crackdown
follows three nights of protests, with Thursday night seeing a heavy
presence of security forces, internet blackouts, and reinforcements from
neighboring provinces. The protests began on Sunday when young people
and teenagers in Dehdasht joined nationwide nighttime demonstrations.
Video footage from local activist groups shows escalating violence
against protesters. Internet connectivity has been cut in protest areas,
while security forces from nearby regions have been deployed to suppress
the demonstrations. The crackdown reflects growing tensions between
protesters and authorities in this southwestern region of Iran. IranWire
sources say that on Sunday evening, following a call for protests in
Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province against “unlivable economic
conditions, plundering of water resources, and a high number of deaths
among people who carry goods across the border,” a protest gathering
formed in the city of Dehdasht. One source said: “The main reason for
the protest is the economic situation. They have built more than eleven
dams in this small province and transfer our water to central Iranian
regions like Isfahan. Meanwhile, many of these people are even deprived
of drinking water from these dams.” Another local who spoke with
IranWire also linked the start of street protests in Dehdasht to the
citizens’ economic situation but said that the widespread suppression of
peaceful protests over two nights has led to their continuation and
expansion to other cities in the province. Meanwhile, images and videos
released from Dehdasht show demands for civil and political freedoms and
citizens’ efforts to unite to reclaim the streets. In one of the widely
shared images from the Dehdasht protests, a young person, their face
covered, stands next to a banner that reads: “Death to the dictator” and
“From Dehdasht to Tehran, Unity, Unity.” IranWire’s sources said they
witnessed security forces directly shooting at protesters.
Dozens of Arrests: Where Are the Detainees?
Reports received by IranWire indicate that dozens of people were
arrested during Tuesday evening’s protests. Several more were also
arrested in previous days; however, only the identities of four
detainees have been confirmed. A source living in the province told
IranWire that the number of detainees is much higher than the four
people whose identities have been verified. “There are more detainees,
but their names aren’t known yet because last night’s gathering
(February 12) was crowded. Today (February 13), both schools and offices
were closed.” The source said the security atmosphere in Dehdasht is so
intense that people say “martial law” has been imposed. “Traffic is
being controlled, and house-to-house searches to arrest Dehdasht youth
have been ongoing. Among those arrested is a twelve-year-old girl.
Unfortunately, we don’t know her name. Schoolgirls are also in the
gatherings, wearing boys’ clothes with covered faces, and their numbers
are not small.” IranWire’s sources say that many of those protesting in
Dehdasht these days are the same protesters from the Woman, Life,
Freedom protest. At least three activists living in Kohgiluyeh and
Boyer-Ahmad have also told IranWire that protest detainees are being
held in Yasouj city in a security detention center on Zar Boulevard.
According to a report received by IranWire, on Thursday night, the
atmosphere in most cities of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province was
highly securitized.“Even the limited footage that has emerged shows how
these kids, who came to the streets empty-handed and for bread, were
brutally suppressed.
“They think they can silence people’s anger by cutting off the internet
and using bullets, but they can’t.”>>

Tuesday.
Video footage from the protests shows demonstrators chanting slogans

carrying placards with slogans such as “Death to the Dictator,” “This is
the year of blood, Seyyed Ali will be overthrown,” and “Death to the
Islamic Republic.”

Association’s vice president told Etemad newspaper that official data

<<Journalist Rohollah Nakhaei Released from Evin Prison After Sentence
Reduction
Journalist Rohollah Nakhaei was released from Evin Prison on Tuesday
evening after serving nearly one year of his sentence. Parto Borhanpour,
Nakhaei’s lawyer, announced on X that he was released following the
application of a “general amnesty and sentence reduction” directive to
his case. Nakhaei was among dozens of journalists arrested in connection
with the Woman, Life, Freedom protests in 2022. Branch 28 of Tehran’s
Revolutionary Court had sentenced him to two years in prison for
“assembly and collusion against national security” under Article 610 of
the Islamic Penal Code and seven months for “propaganda against the
Islamic Republic” under Article 500. The verdict was later upheld by
Branch 36 of Tehran Province’s Court of Appeals. Under Article 134 of
the Islamic Penal Code, two years of the total sentence were
enforceable. According to his lawyer, Nakhaei’s two-year sentence was
implemented last year despite his eligibility for the 2022 amnesty
directive. The directive, issued in February 2023, led to the closure of
cases for numerous citizens arrested or convicted in connection with the

Families of Political Prisoners on Death Row Hold Protest
NRCI - February 11, 2025 - In Women's news
<<Families of Political Prisoners on Death Row Hold Protest Outside Evin
Prison for The Second Consecutive Week
Tehran, February 11, 2025 – For the second consecutive week, families of
political prisoners on death row, accompanied by human rights activists,
staged a protest outside Evin Prison, demanding the reversal of
execution orders. Holding photographs of their loved ones, the
protesters chanted slogans such as “No to Execution” and “Abolish the
Death Penalty”, calling for an end to capital punishment. The Supreme
Court has upheld the death sentences of Pakhshan Azizi, Behrouz Ehsani,
and Mehdi Hassani,

Pakhshan Azizi and Varisha Moradi
while Azizi’s request for retrial has been rejected. Additionally, Vahid
Bani Amerian, Ali Akbar Daneshvarkar, Pouya Ghobadi, Seyed Abolhassan
Montazer, Babak Alipour, Seyed Mohammad Taghavi, and Varisha Moradi
remain on death row in Evin Prison. At the same time, Mohammad Javad
Vafa’i Thani faces execution in Vakilabad Prison, Mashhad. In December
2024, six political prisoners—Vahid Bani Amerian, Pouya Ghobadi, Babak
Alipour, Seyed Abolhassan Montazer, Seyed Mohammad Taghavi, and Ali
Akbar Daneshvarkar—were sentenced to death, imprisonment, and exile on
charges of “membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).”
The families of political prisoners on death row had previously gathered
outside Evin Prison on February 4, 2025, in a similar demonstration
against the death sentences. Protests against capital punishment have
intensified in recent months, with human rights organizations urging the
judiciary to revoke execution orders and review the cases of political
detainees. n January 23, 2025, Amnesty International issued an urgent
warning on its official website, revealing that these six prisoners,
sentenced to death by Branch 26 of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court on
December 1, 2024, face imminent execution. They were convicted under the
charge of “rebellion through membership in opposition groups against the
Islamic Republic.” Amnesty International strongly condemned the trial,
highlighting reports of torture and mistreatment used to extract forced
confessions. The organization stressed that these coerced confessions
undermine the legitimacy and transparency of the judicial process. The
accused have repeatedly denied allegations of armed action against the
state.

No to Execution Tuesdays Campaign Carries On
On the same day, Tuesday, February 11, 2025, the “No to Execution”
campaign marked its 55th consecutive week, with prisoners across Iran
joining the movement through hunger strikes. This campaign has now
spread to 35 prisons, including the women’s ward of Evin Prison, Lakan
Prison in Rasht, and Adelabad Prison in Shiraz, where detainees actively
participate.
In their latest statement, the prisoners declared:
“We, the members of the No to Executions Tuesday Campaign, stand united
and resolute in 35 prisons across Iran, unequivocally condemning all
executions in the country. With steadfast resistance, we raise our
voices in a resounding cry: No to executions! We also issue a stark
warning to all international bodies, human rights organizations, and
conscientious individuals worldwide: In Iran, the machinery of
executions is not a tool of justice but a means of repression and a
mechanism for the regime’s survival. Each execution is a price the
Iranian people are forced to pay to conceal the regime’s crimes.
Therefore, we once again call upon all civil institutions, both domestic
and international, to take urgent and decisive action to put an end to
