Imminent Risk of Execution of Pakhshan Azizi
because "I'm Kurdish, I'm a woman"
Iranwire - January 8, 2025 - Solmaz Eikdar
Iran Faces Critical Shortage of Basic Medicines
Iran is experiencing widespread shortages of basic medications across
multiple provinces, with pharmacies reporting critical gaps in supplies
of common drugs and treatments for chronic conditions. According to
information obtained by IranWire, even domestically produced medicines
are unavailable in provinces such as Sistan and Baluchistan, Khuzestan,
and Isfahan. The shortages extend to medications for chronic conditions,
including diabetes, haemophilia, cancer, thalassemia, and multiple
sclerosis, affecting much of the country. "The only advice I can give
citizens is to avoid getting sick because there simply are not any
medicines available," Tehran pharmacist Hossein Behmanesh told IranWire.
He added that even basic medications for treating common winter
illnesses are out of stock. Behmanesh urged citizens to take preventive
measures, such as wearing masks and avoiding crowded places, given the
scarcity of medicines. "Take care of yourselves... because there's no
medicine to help you," he warned.
The shortages reflect an expansion of the country's ongoing medical
supply challenges, with basic pharmaceutical products now affected
alongside specialized medications. The current crisis in Iran's
pharmaceutical sector began in 2022 when Ebrahim Raisi's administration
removed the 42,000-rial exchange rate for the US dollar, which had been
allocated for importing medicine. A December report by the Iranian
Parliament's Research Center revealed that the pharmaceutical sector
experienced the second-worst production decline among all industries,
surpassed only by the wood and paper sector. Pharmaceutical production
fell by 2.6 per cent in the spring and 18.5 per cent in the summer,
according to the report. Jafar Qaempanah, the acting head of the
Presidential Office, separately reported a 30 per cent decline in
overall drug production in Iran. Additionally, Hammihan newspaper
highlighted in December that delays in payments and a bleak future have
driven many pharmaceutical specialists to leave domestic companies.
Some pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities have even relocated to
neighbouring countries. Pharmaceutical companies in Iran are struggling
with price controls, a shortage of foreign currency for raw materials,
and massive government debt. In addition to declining production,
customs statistics show a 13.6 per cent decrease in drug imports last
year. These combined factors have led to widespread shortages of
essential medicines across the country. Behmanesh shared his firsthand
experience with shortages of multiple sclerosis (MS) medications,
stating, "For over six months, no foreign MS medications have been
distributed to pharmacies. Even domestically-produced alternatives are
hard to find." He added, "As a pharmacist, I must acknowledge that the
quality of Iranian-made medications, especially for chronic illnesses,
is significantly lower than their foreign counterparts. This has harmed
patients who are forced to rely on domestic drugs." Mohammadreza Danesh,
a researcher and pharmaceutical industry expert, explained to IranWire,
"Given the shortage of imported raw materials, it is predictable that
high-quality materials are not available to the few pharmaceutical
companies still operating in Iran." He added, "The currency crisis has
exacerbated this issue." Mohammadreza Zafarghandi, the Minister of
Health, dismissed these growing crises and announced that specialised
foreign currency rates for drugs would be completely eliminated starting
in 2025.
He vaguely said that the Ministry of Health is preparing plans to manage
this transition, without providing any details. The announcement comes
as Iran's pharmaceutical industry struggles to recover from the blow of
eliminating the 42,000-rial exchange rate. The Islamic Republic blames
sanctions and restrictions on financial transactions for the country's
medicine shortages, although European and U.S. governments maintain that
medicine and medical supplies are not subject to sanctions.>>
