Jina Amini’s father
Medyanews - January 25, 2025
<<Iranian court targets Jina Amini’s father over protest against Azizi,
Moradi’s death sentences
Amjad Amini, the father of Jina Amini, revealed that Iran’s judiciary
has charged him with “propaganda against the regime” after he protested
the death sentence of Pakhshan Azizi. In a post on his official
Instagram account, Amini explained that he had been summoned to court
twice. Initially, he was accused of “spreading falsehoods”, but just two
days later, the charges were escalated to include “propaganda against
the regime”.
Amjad Amini, the father of Jina (Mahsa) Amini, who died in morality
police custody in 2022, has revealed that Iran’s judiciary has charged
him with “propaganda against the regime” after his protest against the
death sentence handed to Pakhshan Azizi. Amini shared on his Instagram
that, after being summoned to the prosecutor’s office on 18 January, he
was initially accused of “spreading falsehoods”. Just two days later, a
further charge of “propaganda against the system [state]”, was added,
resulting in two separate cases being filed against him—one in the
Criminal Court and another in the Revolutionary Court of Saqqez. Amini
explained that the charges arose from a photo he posted on Instagram
concerning Azizi’s death sentence. Reflecting on the grief he and his
wife have endured since Jina’s death, he wrote:
“In this troubled country, there is no hope for third-class citizens.
There is no lawyer, no judge, no judiciary—because the intelligence
agency acts as the plaintiff, prosecutor, and judge.”
On 11 January 2025, Amini voiced his profound outrage on Instagram
following the confirmation of Pakhshan Azizi’s death sentence:
“The deeply distressing news of the unjust and merciless confirmation of
the death sentence for the innocent Iranian Kurdish woman, Ms. Pakhshan
Azizi, a devoted and empathetic social worker, is so egregiously cruel
that it strikes at the very core of human decency, leaving one stunned
by the appalling extent of such brutality and inhumanity.”
Protests continue to erupt across Iranian Kurdistan (Rojhilat) in
response to the death sentences of Warisheh Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi.
Reports suggest that nearly 20 individuals have been arrested, with
others summoned by the Intelligence Directorate in Kurdish cities.
Concerns over the possible executions of Warisheh Moradi and Pakhshan
Azizi, two Kurdish women political prisoners, have intensified. Amini,
who has consistently used Instagram to voice his opposition, had
previously marked the anniversary of his daughter’s death and expressed
his outrage at the imprisonment of journalists Niloufar Hamedi and Elahe
Mohammadi, as well as the death sentence imposed on rapper Tomaj Salehi.>>

Pakhshan Azizi: Varisha Moradi - symbols of resistance
Medyanews - January 24, 2025
<<European Parliament condemns Iran, addresses plight of Pakhshan Azizi,
Warisheh Moradi
The European Parliament has passed a resolution condemning the
repression and systematic violation of human rights in Iran, calling for
the immediate release of Pakhshan Azizi and Warisheh Moradi. The
resolution, which was adopted with 556 votes in favour, six against, and
42 abstentions, demands the cancellation of the unjust death sentences
issued to both Azizi and Moradi. The European Parliament has passed a
pivotal resolution demanding the immediate annulment of the death
sentences for Pakhshan Azizi and Warisheh Moradi, while unequivocally
condemning the systematic human rights violations in Iran. The
resolution, passed on Thursday, also called for targeted sanctions
against Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, President Masoud Pezeshkian
and senior judicial officials, and urged the designation of the Islamic
Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity. With an
overwhelming majority of 556 votes in favour, six against, and 42
abstentions, the resolution highlights the urgent need to end Iran’s use
of hostage diplomacy and halt the execution of these unjust death
sentences. The resolution further emphasises that, given Iran’s
longstanding history of human rights abuses and previous European
Parliament resolutions, the execution of political prisoners –
particularly those involved in uprisings – has significantly worsened
since the Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (Woman, Life, Freedom) movement. The second
paragraph notes that both Azizi and Moradi fought ISIS in Kurdistan, but
have been sentenced to death for “armed rebellion against the
government”. It also notes that their trials were marked by the denial
of a fair hearing, torture and prolonged solitary confinement. With
Azizi’s death sentence, confirmed in January 2025, and in light of
Iran’s use of hostage diplomacy and continued human rights violations –
especially targeting women – the European Parliament has demanded the
immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners,
including Azizi, Moradi and 56 others. The resolution further expresses
solidarity with human rights defenders and the Jin, Jiyan, Azadi
movement, urging Iran to end its systemic repression of minorities,
including Kurds, Baluchis, Christians and Baha’is. It also calls for the
safe return of EU nationals such as Olivier Grondeau, Cécile Kohler,
Jacques Paris and Ahmadreza Djalali, and for all charges against them to
be dropped. It “strongly condemns the murder of [Iranian-German citizen]
Jamshid Sharmahd”, demanding that Iran return his body to his family and
disclose the full details surrounding his death. One of the key elements
of the resolution calls for the designation of Iran’s Islamic
Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation. It also
supports the imposition of sanctions on high-ranking Iranian officials,
including Ali Khamenei and Pezeshkian. Additionally, the resolution
targets key judicial figures responsible for the death sentence of
Pakhshan Azizi, including Gholamhossein Mohseni Ezheyie, head of Iran’s
judiciary, Mohammad Movahedi, the country’s attorney general, and Judge
Iman Afshari, the judge who issued the death sentence. Finally, the
resolution calls for increased financial support for Iranian civil
society, highlighting the EU’s commitment to countering the regime’s
repression and advancing human rights. Iran experts believe that the
leak of a statement by Narges Mohammadi, just before the European
Union’s meeting condemning Iran, played a key role in shaping the
resolution. Mohammadi, a Nobel laureate, joined the French Senate’s
Women’s Rights Commission via video conference and condemned the Islamic
Republic’s retaliation against women following the killing of Jina Mahsa
Amini.

Jina Amini
She voiced deep concern over the rising numbers of executions in Iran,
particularly the death sentences of Azizi and Moradi, and revealed that
gallows have been set up in Iranian prisons. Mohammadi urged the French
Senate to take decisive action and recognise gender apartheid as a
criminal offence.>>

Medyanews - January 23, 2025
<<Pakhshan Azizi: A symbol of resistance in ongoing struggle for Kurdish
and Iranian women’s freedom
Zilan Vejin, the former co-chair of the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK)
and a prominent political figure, recently authored an article for the
Firat News Agency, shedding light on the extraordinary resistance of
Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish civil activist sentenced to death by the
Iranian regime. Vajin emphasised the critical need to amplify support
for Azizi, whose unwavering defiance stands as a testament to the
relentless fight for justice.
In her article, published a day before the general strike in Iranian
Kurdistan (Rojhilat) on Firat News Agency, Zilan Vejin, the former
co-chair of the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK) and a prominent women
political figure, examines the broader resistance of Kurdish and Iranian
women against the oppressive Islamic Republic of Iran. She underscores
Pakhshan Azizi’s unwavering defiance, portraying her as a symbol of
women’s resistance and a leading figure in the women’s scouting
movement. Vejin further highlights the critical role of civil society
organisations, particularly the “Mothers of Peace” in Sanandaj (Sine),
Iranian Kurdistan, in mobilising and sustaining resistance.
In this context, Vejin writes: “The steadfast stance of the ‘Mothers of
Peace’ in Sanandaj proves that no amount of state oppression can
suppress the voices and demands of women and civil society in Iranian
Kurdistan. Society has reached a level of awareness that defies
injustice and refuses to bow to tyranny. These values have become the
bedrock of the collective democratic struggle of the Iranian people,
especially women.” Zilan Vejin highlights the unwavering defiance of
women like Pakhshan Azizi, Warisheh Moradi, and Golrokh Iraei within the
oppressive confines of Iranian prisons. She argues that their resistance
against patriarchal and religious oppression has simultaneously struck
fear into the Iranian regime and ignited a wave of inspiration among
women. According to Vejin, their courage has radicalised the struggle
for equality and justice, further energising the movement for liberation
and change.
The uprising of Jin, Jiyan, Azadi
Reflecting on the impacts of the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” (Woman, Life,
Freedom) uprising, Vejin contends that this movement has transformed
collective anger and grief into an unyielding struggle against the
Iranian regime. She argues that the core values embedded in this slogan,
championed by women, have left an indelible mark on the Iranian
political landscape. These values, Vejin believes, will serve as guiding
principles for the region’s future, etched permanently into the
collective consciousness of society.
A vision for the future
In the context of rising tensions between Iran and Western nations,
coupled with fears of a potential “Syrianisation” of Iran, Vejin
underscores the critical role of women in shaping the future of Iran and
Kurdistan’s political future. She asserts that a democratic Iran cannot
be built upon patriarchal, nationalist, or religious ideologies.
Instead, the progressive vision of women like Zeyneb Jalalian, Warisheh
Moradi, and Pakhshan Azizi—anchored in the philosophy of “Jin, Jiyan,
Azadi”—presents a pathway toward a more equitable and inclusive future.
Solidarity and collective action
Vejin draws attention to the arrest of Ahou Daryaei, a Persian women
student at Tehran’s Islamic Azad University, whose defiance against
patriarchal norms exemplifies the growing resistance among women.
However, she cautions that individual acts of bravery must evolve into
collective movements to achieve lasting change. Vejin urges for greater
solidarity and widespread organisation among women to dismantle the
regime’s oppressive structures.
Pakhshan Azizi: A beacon of resistance
Vejin reflects on Azizi’s personal struggle and her writings from
prison, describing them as a manifesto of the shared identity and
resistance of Kurdish and Iranian women. Azizi’s words, Vojin argues,
encapsulate the unspoken pain and resilience of countless women—those
silenced during interrogations, executed without trial, or killed and
forgotten. In conclusion, Vejin asserts that figures such as Zeynab
Jalalian, Warisheh Moradi, and especially Pakhshan Azizi, embody not
only the struggles of Kurdish women but also the collective suffering
and defiance of women across the Middle East. Their legacies, she
argues, illuminate the path toward solidarity, democracy, and the
abolition of executions. For Vejin, Azizi stands as a symbol of Kurdish
women’s enduring resistance and a trailblazer in the fight for freedom—a
cultural icon whose influence transcends borders.>>

Pakhshan Azizi and Verisheh Moradi

<<Hannah Neumann: Pakhshan Azizi and Verisheh Moradi embody everything
this regime fears
“Pakhshan Azizi and Verisheh Moradi embody everything this regime
fears,” said Hannah Neumann, member of the European Parliament,
stressing that these two women would be heroes in a normal country.
News Center- Hannah Neumann, member of the European Parliament and Chair
for the Delegation for relations with Iran, posted a message on the
social media platform X on Thursday about the death sentences handed
down to Pakhshan Azizi and Verisheh Moradi. In the message, Hannah
Neumann called for the death sentences handed down to the two Kurdish
women to be stopped and said, “Pakhshan Azizi cared for the wounded and
displaced in Rojava, helping those fleeing from the brutality of ISIS.
Verisheh Moradi fought against ISIS herself on the front lines in Kobane,
defending not only lives but also human dignity. “In a normal country,
these two would be heroes. In Iran, they face death row. For the first
time in years, the regime threatens to execute women political
prisoners. And these death sentences are nothing but acts of revenge.
Revenge by the Islamic regime against women, against Kurds and against
the ideals of Woman Life Freedom: self-determination and bravery.
Revenge because so many still dare to speak out - and the only response
this regime knows is to crush dissent by brutal force. Yes, the henchmen
of this regime can imprison people, but this will only amplify the
unstoppable call for freedom. Pakhshan and Verisheh embody everything
this regime fears; Jin, Jiyan, Azadi.”>>

Medyanews - January 22, 2025
<<Kurds mobilise in historic strike against death sentences for Azizi
and Moradi
Kurds across Iranian Kurdistan (Rojhilat) staged a landmark general
strike on 22 January to protest the death sentences of activists
Pakhshan Azizi and Warisheh Moradi. The movement, called by six
political parties, has triggered widespread solidarity and resistance.
Kurds in Iranian Kurdistan (Rojhilat) united in an unprecedented general
strike on 22 January, demanding the revocation of death sentences handed
to Kurdish activists Pakhshan Azizi and Warisheh Moradi. The strike,
initiated by six political parties and supported by independent figures,
has demonstrated extraordinary solidarity across the region. The
Brussels-based Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) spearheaded the
initiative, with major Kurdish political entities—including the
Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI), Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK),
the Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK), and the three Komala parties, issuing
a joint statement. The announcement, made on 18 January, urged unity
among Kurds to oppose what they described as the Islamic Republic’s
oppressive policies. Images and videos shared widely on social media
highlight the breadth of participation, spanning several provinces.
Kermanshah (Kermashan) witnessed deserted streets and shuttered shops.
In Sanandaj (Sine), the capital of Kurdistan Province, the main markets
and public spaces were eerily empty, reflecting near-total compliance
with the strike. In Marivan (Merîwan), activists distributed leaflets
encouraging participation, while footage captured the strikingly quiet
streets. Other cities, including Baneh (Bane), Saqqez (Seqiz)—hometown
of women’s rights icon Jina (Mahsa) Amini—Dehgolan (Dewulan), and
Divandare (Dîwandere), also observed significant shutdowns. West
Azerbaijan Province saw Mahabad (Mehabad) and Bukan (Bokan) join the
movement, broadening its geographical impact. The Iranian authorities
responded by deploying security forces to monitor the situation, marking
closed shops and sealing some businesses. Local sources reported an
increased presence of security personnel in affected cities. Prisoners
in the women’s ward of Tehran’s Evin Prison also expressed solidarity by
launching a hunger strike. Prominent detainee Golrokh Iraei wrote on her
X (former Twitter) account: “Female prisoners in Evin, aligned with the
52nd week of the ‘Tuesdays No Execution’ campaign, stand in solidarity
with the Kurdistan general strike. We are observing a hunger strike on
Tuesday and Thursday.” Meanwhile, an IRGC-affiliated news outlet claimed
that Azizi’s execution had been postponed and that her lawyer was
pursuing an appeal. The claim has not been independently verified, and
Kurdish political parties have criticised it as an attempt to undermine
the strike’s impact. This strike marks one of the largest demonstrations
of Kurdish solidarity in recent years, highlighting ongoing tensions
between the Kurdish population and the Iranian government. The protest
reflects growing frustration with what Kurdish leaders describe as
systemic oppression and targeted violence.>>

<<Kongra Star Spokesperson calls for solidarity with Pakhshan Azizi
Kongra Star Spokesperson Rihan Loqo condemns the Iranian Supreme Court’s
decision to uphold the death sentence against Pakhshan Azizi, stressing
that such decisions cannot undermine women’s struggle for freedom.
Qamishlo- On August 4, 2023, Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish journalist and
political prisoner, was arrested in Tehran by Iranian Intelligence
Services and held in solitary confinement in Ward 209 of Evin Prison for
five months. On July 23, 2024, she was sentenced to death by Branch 26
of the Tehran Revolutionary Court on charges of “armed rebellion against
the state”. On January 8, 2025, the Iranian Supreme Court upheld the
death sentence handed down to Pakhshan Azizi. Since then, human rights
organizations, women’s organizations and activists have released
statements, condemning the Iranian Supreme Court’s decision to uphold
the death sentence against her.
NuJINHA spoke to Kongra Star Spokesperson Rihan Loqo about the death
penalty in Iran. Rihan Logo recalled the regime's oppression against
opposition in Iran and said, “As is known, the Iranian regime has
targeted many women activists, journalists and politicians, who led the
‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ uprising and spoke out against oppression and
injustice. Journalist Pakhshan Azizi is one of them.”
‘Women fighting for freedom face death penalty
Rihan Loqo condemned the Iranian Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the
death sentence against Pakhshan Azizi and the death sentences handed
down to women political prisoners. “Women face the death penalty for
fighting for freedom and demanding their rights. Death penalty is a
crime against humanity. During the ‘Jin,Jiyan, Azadî' uprising, women,
who have been oppressed and exploited for thousands of years, said they
would never bow down to the system of the regime. This system aims to
intimidate these women by killing them and sentencing them to death.”
‘The Iranian regime is afraid of women’s struggle’
The Iranian regime thinks that it can prevent the struggle and
resistance of women by using the death penalty, emphasized Rihan Loqo.
“The Iranian Supreme Court upheld the death sentence handed down to
Pakhshan Azizi. Pakhshan Azizi and Warisha Moradi (Verisheh Moradi) were
arrested for leading their society and struggling for freedom. This
shows how the Iranian regime is afraid of women’s struggle for freedom.
The regime violates human rights and aims to intimidate people by using
the death penalty. There is no democracy and equality in a system
executing people.”
‘Pakhshan Azizi must be immediately released’
Rihan Loqo called on all human rights organizations and women’s
organizations to “raise your voices for the release of Pakhshan Azizi.
“As Kongra Star, we condemn the death sentences handed down to political
prisoners in Iran. Condemning the death sentences is insufficient. We
call on all human rights organizations, women’s organizations and
activists to take to the streets and speak out against the death
sentences. They must be in solidarity with Kurdish political prisoner
Pakhshan Azizi and all political prisoners in Iran." >>

Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - January 20, 2025
<<Call for a general strike against the death sentences of Pakhshan
Azizi and Varisheh Moradi
The issuance of execution sentences for Pakhshan Azizi and Varisheh
Moradi, two Kurdish political prisoners, coupled with the Islamic
Republic of Iran’s propaganda targeting Kurdish political prisoners, is
deeply alarming and intolerable. In response, six Kurdish political
parties have called for a general strike as a preemptive protest against
these sentences. The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights supports this
civil action and urges the people of Kurdistan to participate widely in
this strike to stand against these unjust rulings and raise their voices
for justice. This strike is not merely a protest against the impending
executions of these two women; it is a stand against the broader wave of
executions across Iran. If Kurdistan does not stand alone in this
struggle, a path to halting this tsunami of death can be forged.
Wednesday, January 22, 2025, has been designated as the day of the
general strike—a chance to oppose death sentences and fight to save the
lives of Pakhshan Azizi and Varisheh Moradi. Hengaw calls on Iranian
civil society and international organizations to not only amplify this
call but to take practical steps to prevent the implementation of these
sentences. Now is the time for swift and decisive action to stop these
sentences before it is too late. According to data recorded by Hengaw’s
Documentation and Statistics Center, more than 900 prisoners were
executed in Iran in 2024, of whom 183 were Kurds. Additionally, 30 of
those executed were women, with a significant proportion belonging to
ethnic and national minorities. This highlights a serious human rights
crisis.

religious leaders, students and lawyers from Iran and abroad.
‘Standing against all kinds of oppression is our duty’
“No society can achieve justice by shedding blood,” the petitioners said
in a statement. “The death penalty does not lead to justice. The
execution of Pakhshan Azizi will open a non-healing wound in society.
Standing against all kinds of oppression is our duty." >>

<<General strike in Rojhelat against death penalty
Six political parties and organizations in Rojhelat Kurdistan have
released a statement, calling for a general strike on January 22
(Wednesday) to protest the death sentences handed down to Pakhshan Azizi
and Warisha Moradi.
News Center- Six political parties and organizations in Rojhelat
Kurdistan have released a joint statement, calling for general strike on
January 22 (Wednesday) to protest the death sentences handed down to
Pakhshan Azizi and Warisha Moradi.
‘Take urgent action’
“As people suffer from unemployment, poverty, economic crisis, the lack
of political freedom and many other social problems, the Iranian regime
has sentenced dozens of political prisoners to death across Rojhelat
Kurdistan and Iran, instead of responding to the demands of the people.
In such an environment, urgent action must be taken to stop the
execution of Pakhshan Azizi and Warisha (Varisheh) Moradi. The
declaration of a general strike in Rojhelat Kurdistan is an action
against the death penalty in Iran.” Calling on everyone to join the
general strike on Wednesday, the statement said, “The power of unity
must be demonstrated. We call on everyone not to go to work and school
and keep their workplaces closed on January 22 (Wednesday). This strike
is an opportunity to save people's lives. We should show once again that
Kurdistan will not remain silent against the death penalty and take a
strong stance against it.”

Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - January 19, 2025
<<Sanandaj: Asad Ghafouri, Kurdish university professor and campaign
leader for saving Pakhshan Azizi's Life, arrested
Dr. Asad Ghafouri, a university lecturer and one of the administrators
of the "Save Pakhshan Azizi's Life" campaign, was arrested by security
forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran and transferred to an undisclosed
location. According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for
Human Rights, Dr. Ghafouri was arrested at approximately 2:00 PM on
Saturday, January 18, 2025, following a raid by the Intelligence
Department forces on his home. Informed sources stated that Dr. Ghafouri,
a Mechanical Engineering Department faculty member at Islamic Azad
University in Sanandaj, and other administrators of the Telegram
campaign had successfully gathered over 5,000 signatures supporting
their cause. Hengaw has learned that shortly after Dr. Ghafouri's
arrest, the Intelligence Department blocked the Telegram group dedicated
to collecting signatures for the campaign, rendering it inaccessible to
its administrators. Recently, the death sentence of Pakhshan Azizi, a
Kurdish political prisoner, was upheld by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court
of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Previously, her lawyers had raised
concerns about the influence of security agencies on the case and
expressed doubts about the possibility of her exoneration through the
appeals process.>>
