Poisoning of students
NCRI - Womens committee - 5 Nov 2023 - in Women's News
<<A new wave of gas poisoning of school girls resumes in Iran
The gas poisoning of school girls in Iran has resumed, with the third
incident happening in a week in Ahvaz, the capital of Khuzestan
Province, southwestern Iran. On Saturday, November 4, 2023, a number of
students in Kowsar girls' school in Ahvaz had to be taken to hospital
due to inhaling an odorous gas which caused shortness of breath and
other symptoms of poisoning. Official media in Iran did not use the term
<poisoning,> and only wrote about <shortness of breath.> In the
meantime, the political and intelligence deputy of the governor of
Khuzestan said the students were feeling <discomfort.> Abdollah Afrazeh
Shahavand rejected the notion of poisoning and said using the term
poisoning is the enemy's scheme and will be taken advantage of against
national security. He said, <What happened on Saturday, what a
completely normal incident. A liquid that was supposed to be injected
into the city gas (had leaked out) and this odor was smelt by citizens
in their homes. It is not harmful at all and is not poisonous. As
doctors have announced to us, these cases of discomfort are due to the
stress exerted on the students. On Sunday, October 29, sixty-seven
schoolgirls at Zanjan's Kowsar High School of Art also had to be
hospitalized due to poisoning. On Wednesday, November 1, 2023, an
elementary girls' school in Rasoulabad Baghdanieh village, in Sistan and
Baluchestan province, fell victim to another chemical attack. Ambulances
transported some of the poisoned students to nearby medical centers.
Following the chemical attack, military forces cordoned off the school,
preventing parents and local residents from approaching the affected
area. Girls' schools and high schools across Iran fell prey to chemical
attacks from December 2022 through April 2023. Shockingly, over 700
schools in more than 160 cities across Iran have been affected. Various
Health Ministry officials, Members of Parliament (MPs), and regime
authorities estimated the number of affected students to be between
5,000 and 13,000 in February and early March, with at least five
children losing their lives in these horrific attacks. The clerical
regime failed to take any significant measures to halt these organized
attacks nationwide, nor did it provide any convincing answers to the
parents and the public. The NCRI Women's Committee calls on the UN
Special Rapporteurs to undertake effective measures to investigate this
new wave of gas poisoning of young children in Iran and stop it from
spreading.>>

<<Chemical Attack Targets Elementary Girls' School in a Village in SE
Iran
On Wednesday, November 1, 2023, an elementary girls' school in
Rasoulabad Baghdanieh village fell victim to yet another chemical
attack. The horrifying incident resulted in several schoolgirls being
poisoned by toxic gases. Ambulances transported some of the affected
students to nearby medical centers. Rasoulabad Baghdanieh village is
situated in Iranshahr County, within the southeastern Sistan and
Baluchestan province. Following the chemical attack, military forces
cordoned off the school, preventing parents and local residents from
approaching the affected area.

<<Health Scare in Zanjan: 67 Girl Students Hospitalized After Poisoning
Incident
Sixty-seven girl students from one of the schools in Zanjan were
hospitalized with symptoms of poisoning, on Sunday, October 29, 2023.
Hasan Esmkhani, the Public Relations Manager of Zanjan University of
Medical Sciences, announced that following a poisoning incident at
Kowsar Girls' High School of Art in Zanjan, 36 students were transferred
to Mousavi Hospital, 29 to Vali-e-Asr Hospital, one to Baqiyatollah
Hospital, and one to Imam Hossein Hospital in Zanjan. Esmkhani pointed
out that 62 hospitalized girl students had been discharged with steady
and desirable conditions, although five students, who were generally
well, would be discharged in a few hours. The Public Relations Manager
of Zanjan University of Medical Sciences said the cause of this
poisoning was being investigated. He said, <The main problem of the
students admitted to the medical centers was the psychological burden
and anxiety caused by the incident.> (The state-run Hamshahrionline.ir,
October 29, 2023)
Poisoning of Female Students in Iran, the horror continues girl students
The poisoning incident is a stark reminder of the horrible
six-month-long organized series of chemical attacks on girls' schools
from December 2022 until May 2023. The attacks occurred in over 700
schools in over 160 cities across Iran. Various Health Ministry, MPs,
and regime officials put the number of students affected between 5,000
to 13,000 in February and early March. Tragically, at least five
children lost their lives. The Iranian regime's response to these
attacks was appalling. Instead of taking swift action to investigate and
stop the attacks, the regime engaged in a denial campaign, blaming the
enemies and foreign intelligence services for the attacks. The regime's
inaction and cover-up attempts were finally concluded by an Intelligence
Ministry report on April 28, which denied the use of poisonous chemicals
and claimed that the chemical attacks were mischief-making by students
themselves!>>

<<Students Sentenced to Prison for Protesting Schoolgirl Poisonings
Two students from Allameh Tabatabai University in Teheran, Zia Nabawi
and Hasti Amiri, have had their one-year prison sentences upheld in an
appeals court. The sentences were imposed following their involvement in
protests against a series of chemical attacks in schools across Iran.
The initial court proceedings, which led to these sentences, took place
at the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Teheran. The two students had been
engaged in protests against the poisoning of female students, and their
cases are related to their participation in a student gathering at
Allameh Tabatabai University on March 7. In the aftermath of this
gathering, both Nabawi and Amiri, along with Fereshteh Tousi, were
summoned to the Evin Security Prosecutor's Office for questioning.
According to reports from the United Students Telegram Channel, the
fallout from the March 7 rally also resulted in at least 30 protesting
students from Allameh University being banned from entering the campus.
Nabawi, a student of social sciences at Allameh University, has faced
numerous challenges in his academic journey, because of his activism,
including academic suspension and educational deprivation. He had
previously been arrested during the 2009 protests, spending nearly eight
years in prison. Despite these hardships, he remains dedicated to his
political activism.>>
