<<'Israel killed six journalists in March'
Six journalists were killed and nine more injured in the Israeli attacks
on Gaza in March 2024, according to the report released by the
Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate.
News Center- The Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate has released its
March report on crimes, violations and attacks committed by Israeli
forces against journalists in the Gaza Strip. In March 2024, three
journalists were killed in the Israeli airstrikes on their homes and
three more died from shrapnel-related wounds, according to the report.
The report also added that nine journalists were injured in the Israeli
attacks on the Gaza Strip and eight journalists were detained by Israeli
forces in March. <In March, Israeli forces raided four houses and
facilities of journalists and opened fire on journalists three times.
About 10 journalists were beaten by Israeli forces in March,> the report
said. At least 140 journalists have been killed in the Israeli attacks
on the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, the Gaza Media Office said in a
statement on April 3.>>

<<Live: Israel pushes for more sanctions against Iran, military vows
response
Israel's foreign minister on Tuesday said he was urging countries to
place sanctions on Iran's missile programme and proscribe its
Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation. Israel's armed
forces chief has vowed to respond to Iran"s missile and drone attack
against the country, even after appeals for restraint poured in from
world leaders fearing wider regional conflict. Follow our liveblog for
the latest updates on the situation in the Middle East.
Summary:
US House Speaker Mike Johnson is pushing toward action this week on aid
for Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan, unveiling an elaborate plan Monday to
break a package into separate votes to squeeze through the House's
political divides on foreign policy. Israeli settlers killed two
Palestinians in the occupied West Bank on Monday, Palestinian officials
said. The Palestinian health ministry named the victims of the attack
near Nablus as Abdulrahman Maher Bani Fadel, 30, and Mohammed Ashraf
Bani Jame, 21, according to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa.
Pro-Palestinian demonstrators blocked San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge
on Monday, with aerial footage showing the entire span packed with
traffic in one direction while lanes in the other direction were empty.
The protest appeared to be part of a coordinated day of direct action
taking place in various cities around the world calling for a ceasefire
in Israel's war in Gaza. At least 33,797 Palestinians have been killed
and an estimated 76,465 have been injured in Israel's military offensive
in Gaza, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.
Some 1,170 people were killed in the Hamas-led October 7 attacks that
sparked the war and 250 people were taken hostage, according to Israeli
figures, with 132 still missing.>>

<<Middle East latest: UN nuclear watchdog 'concerned' Israel could
target Iranian nuclear facilities in revenge attack
The UN's nuclear watchdog has said it is worried Israel could target
Iranian nuclear facilities, after its military chief vowed to respond to
Iran's missile and drone attack despite international pressure to
exercise restraint.
World braced for Israeli response
Calls for restraint have come from all areas of the globe, but Israel
has vowed to respond to Iran's attack. Israeli military chief of staff
Herzi Halevi said: <This launch of so many missiles, cruise missiles,
and drones into Israeli territory will be met with a response.> The
missile and drone barrage was itself a retaliation to a deadly suspected
Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria. Israel's war cabinet
discussed a range of options at its meeting on Monday, with the
intention of hurting Iran but without causing an all-out war, Israel's
Channel 12 news reported yesterday. <We're on the edge of the cliff and
we have to move away from it,> Josep Borrell, the European Union's
foreign affairs chief, told Spanish radio station Onda Cero. <We have to
step on the brakes and reverse gear."
French president Emmanuel Macron, German chancellor Olaf Scholz and
British foreign secretary David Cameron made similar appeals. Washington
and United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres also have called
for restraint. Russia has refrained from publicly criticising its ally
Iran but has also urged restraint. China said it believed Iran could
<handle the situation well and spare the region further turmoil> while
safeguarding its sovereignty and dignity. Italy, which holds the
rotating G7 presidency, said it was open to new sanctions on Iran and
suggested any new measures would target individuals.
Analysis: Israel will likely respond - with or without international
support
Despite the degree of international pressure for restraint, Israel will
act alone if they are determined to respond to Iran, says Middle East
correspondent Alistair Bunkall. This may be a strike on Iranian proxies
rather than Iran itself, and it could be in the coming weeks rather than
hours, he explained. <The Israeli psyche is that they will do it alone
if necessary. Clearly I think they would want to make sure that the US
backing was there, but if they feel the need to attack Iran then that is
what they would do.> Israel does not want a war with Iran, but a red
line has been crossed, said Bunkall. <They don't seem to be able to
accept the fact that Iran fired ballistic missiles. <That seems to be
the red line that Iran crossed and the Israeli government feels that it
needs to send a message back to Iran.> Israeli civilians do not want
escalation, but they have lived under the threat of attack from Iran and
its proxies for many years and as a result there is widespread support
for the military, said Bunkall.
US fighter jet squadrons remain in Middle East
US fighter jets and navy ships participated in the efforts to take out
Iranian missiles and drones on Saturday, the Pentagon says. The USS
Carney and the USS Arleigh Burke, both navy destroyers, shot down
missiles from the Mediterranean Sea, said spokesperson Major General Pat
Ryder.
Additional fighter squadrons were moved into the region before the
weekend and they remain there, he said. He would not identify the
countries where they were based. Asked about Israel's vow to respond,
Maj Gen Ryder said it was up to Israel to decide. <We don't want to see
escalation, but we obviously will take necessary measures to protect our
forces in the region.> Pressed on whether such a response would be
counterproductive to stability in the region, he said the US will <stay
in close consultation with our Israeli partners, as we have done
throughout the weekend. Again, we don't seek wider regional conflict>.>>

<<Iran's staged celebrations: Public sentiment vs. regime spectacle
during missile attack on Israel
Even before the drones and missiles had reached Israeli territory, the
Islamic Republic of Iran, via its paramilitary Basiji forces, had
already organised state-sanctioned street parties to celebrate. A video
posted half an hour before the first missiles arrived in Israel shows
hundreds of people waving Iranian flags and chanting: <Supreme leader,
we are ready [to go to war].> In contrast to the apparently orchestrated
public events, on social media many Iranians expressed grave misgivings
about the attack and the possibility of war and further economic
turmoil. State-run television announced the massive drone and missile
barrage at 11:54 pm Tehran time on April 13 (11:24 pm in Israel). State
media called the attack <retaliation. for Israel's April 1 air strike on
the Iranian consulate in Syria, which resulted in the deaths of 11
individuals, including high-ranking officers of Iran's powerful
Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The first sirens warning of incoming
missiles in southern Israel sounded more than two hours later, at 1:42
am Israel time, or 2:12 am in Iran, with explosions heard shortly
afterwards. Immediately following the formal declaration of the assault,
even before the drones and missiles could reach their targets in Israel,
public celebrations, apparently organised by members of the Basij, the
paramilitary branch of the IRGC, took place in multiple cities around
Iran. A video posted at 1:34 am Tehran time on the Telegram channel of
state-run Noor News showed hundreds of people celebrating and chanting
pro-war slogans in Tehran's Palestine Square. A huge billboard appeared
in the same square the same night, showing Iranian missiles tearing the
Israeli flag, with the slogan: <The next slap will be stronger.> In an
apparent effort to sculpt the public perception of the attack, both
state-controlled and IRGC-aligned media outlets promptly broadcast the
images of people celebrating what one pro-regime MP called the IRGC's
<devastating rebuttal> to Israel. This video showing celebrations under
way in Tehran's Palestine Square was posted on March 14 at 1:34 am
Tehran time on the Telegram channel of state-run Noor News - 38 minutes
before the first sirens sounded in southern Israel warning of missiles
arriving. The crowd can be heard chanting <Supreme Leader, we are ready
[to go to war].> The same media published a video of a gathering of some
of the regime's supporters in Ahvaz, in southwest Iran, with the same
slogans as in Tehran. Yet, away from these orchestrated displays of
approval, in more private corners like X and other platforms popular in
Iran, such as Telegram, WhatsApp, and Instagram, the tone among ordinary
Iranians was markedly different. The prevailing mood was one of fear of
the possible outbreak of war and concern about a further deterioration
of Iran's already beleaguered economy.
'No one in Iran wants a war with anyone in the world, especially not
with Israel'
Niki [not her real name] is a 25 year-old Iranian who says she first
heard about the attacks through Telegram channels. Like many young
Iranians expressing their opinions on social media following the April
13-14 barrage against Israel, she spoke of her fears of war and further
isolation and economic turmoil for Iran. <When I saw the news for the
first time, I felt a feeling of fear and horror in my stomach. I prayed
that it was fake news, turned on BBC Persian, and saw that they were
reporting it live, and I froze. I have never been so scared in my life.
Waiting for hours for the drones and missiles was hell. I saw a lot of
people making jokes about <the war>. I also laughed a lot at these
jokes. When there is a disaster in this country, we make jokes about it.
I am sure it is a national coping mechanism for us Iranians, to avoid
going crazy in this hell we live in.> During and after the April 13-14,
2024 attacks on Israel, many Iranians made fun of the attacks launched
by the IRGC. This post on Telegram features images of the British comic
character Mr. Bean with a caption: <Israel, waiting for the drones to
arrive.>
'Why should we go to war?'
Like other Iranians posting on social media, Niki said she was afraid
the attacks would lead to a new war for Iran, after the country's
devastating 1980-88 war with Saddam Hussein's Iraq. <Just as one war in
40 years was not enough for the mollahs [the war between Iran and Iraq
in the 1980s], they are pushing our generation towards another war. If
the war with Saddam was to defend our country, I respect that. But why
should we go to war with Israel? What is the Iranian people's problem
with Israel? Nothing. I don't want to die for the ideology of the Basiji,
the IRGC bastards that I don't give a damn about. For the same bastards
who arrest me or beat me up on the street because I don't wear a hijab,
or who killed and tortured my brothers and sisters during the protests.
Another point. They have fired many drones and missiles, what have they
achieved? Nothing, neither militarily nor politically. For me, living in
Iran, it does not make much difference whether I am at war or not.
Either a missile falls on my head, or a baton hits my head during a
demonstration, or I die of poverty in a corner, or in an accident caused
by crappy cars. In the end I will die here without knowing what life
really means. For me, living in Iran, it does not make much difference
whether I am at war or not. Either a missile falls on my head, or a
baton hits my head during a demonstration, or I die of poverty in a
corner, or in an accident caused by crappy cars. In the end I will die
here without knowing what life really means. If war breaks out and they
give us a weapon, we should f*** the mollahs first. If war breaks out
and they give us a weapon, we should f*** the mollahs first. <As a
woman, I am more likely to be killed by a member of the morality police
than be attacked by the Israeli army... at least until now.>
'Our economy is being ruined by these mollahs'
Many Iranians posting on social media noted that following the April
13-14 attack on Israel, the Iranian toman lost 15 percent of its value,
reaching 72,000 tomans for one dollar. The Iranian stock market also
experienced a slump.
Niki continues:
<When I talk to people, they share the same feelings - family, friends,
people at university, people on the street, all of them. Our economy is
being ruined by these mollahs. Our money is the most worthless money in
the world. The Islamic Republic has created this image of our people:
that Iranians are a bunch of savages attacking this or that country.
Their actions have put us in a position where we can be accused of being
an anti-Semitic nation. International media have so far reported mixed
information about Israel's reaction to these attacks. According to the
New York Times, Netanyahu has decided not to attack Iran after a
telephone conversation with US President Biden, while other media report
that the Israeli war cabinet has decided on a decisive attack on Iran.>

Skynews - April 15, 2024 - By Louise NORDSTROM
<<The whole world held its breath when, a few hours before midnight on
Saturday, Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps announced the Islamic
Republic had launched its first-ever direct attack on Israel, sending a
barrage of drones and, a little later in the night, missiles towards Tel
Aviv. The attack, Iran said, was a response to Israel's April 1 air
strike on its consulate in Damascus, in which a total of seven
Revolutionary Guards had been killed, including Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a
senior commander of the Guards' elite al-Quds force. Zahedi is believed
to have played a key role in Iran's relationship with the Lebanon-based
Hezbollah group and Syria's President Bashar al-Assad. His death
therefore dealt a serious blow to Tehran.
Although the Israeli government has not commented on the attack, Tehran
immediately blamed it on the <Zionist regime>, Iran's term for Israel,
vowing to not let it go unanswered.
More than 300 projectiles
On April 13, more than 170 drones, 30 cruise missiles and 120 ballistic
missiles finally left their launch pads in Iran, lighting up the night
sky for several hours. As they reached Israeli territory, however,
nearly all of them were shot down. And the few that actually did manage
to pierce through Israel's renowned Iron Dome air defence system caused
only minor infrastructure damage, including to an Israeli military base
in southern Israel. A seven-year-old girl in a Bedouin town was also
injured from shrapnel after one of the Iranian projectiles was
intercepted by Israeli fire, The Times of Israel reported.
.....
Iran's wide-scale coordinated attack demonstrates it poses not only a
regional threat but an international one. Together with a defense
coalition of international partners, we achieved a successful
interception of 99% of aerial threats launched by Iran.
We stand strong....
- Israel Defense Forces (@IDF) April 14, 2024
In an interview with Israeli newspaper Ynet, Israeli Brigadier General
Reem Aminoach, a former financial advisor to the IDF chief of staff,
estimated the defence to have costed some 4-5 billion shekels,
equivalent to between €1-1.24 billion.
Many warnings
But Tehran's <failure> soon began to raise eyebrows, with experts
questioning whether Iran’s impressive barrage of airborne weapons were
even intended to cause any damage at all. Especially since the Islamic
Republic had repeatedly warned Israel that it would be subject to some
sort of a counter-attack. Several hours prior to the drone and missile
attacks, Iran had also seized an Israeli-linked cargo vessel, clearly
signaling that a larger-scale assault was fast approaching, prompting
Israel to close its schools and ban larger gatherings. Conducted on the
strength of Article 51 of the UN Charter pertaining to legitimate
defense, Iran’s military action was in response to the Zionist regime's
aggression against our diplomatic premises in Damascus. The matter can
be deemed concluded. However, should the Israeli...

In other words, Iran seems to have been generous in handing out advance
notices.
When Iran's Revolutionary Guards finally announced it had sent a barrage
of drones Israel's way, the government had already had time to up its
defences, close schools and ban larger gatherings in some areas. The
fact that it would take the drones almost four hours before they entered
Israeli air space also played in Israel's favour. <It appears that with
the prior warnings Iran had issued, and with the kind of weapons they
used - slow-moving drones - it wanted to minimise casualties,> Ali Vaez,
project director for Iran at the Washington DC-based think-tank
International Crisis Group, said, adding that the intention seems to
have been to prevent <an all-out war in the region>. Julien Barnes-Dacey,
director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at the European
Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), agreed, saying <the strikes were
very well telegraphed>. <This was about demonstrating a firm response
[to the Damascus strike] and yet holding it sufficiently in check to
avoid provoking direct war, which is still Iran's core aim,> he said in
an emailed comment.
Throwing bait to hardliners
But why such a show of force then?
According to Vaez, it may have been a way for the Iranian regime to - at
least partly - satisfy the country's hardliners, who feel that the
leadership has been too soft on Israel as it continues to target Iranian
interests in the region. <For a regime like the Islamic Republic, which
has lost a lot of legitimacy at home, that 10-15 percent constituency is
important,> he said. Had Iran wanted to cause Israel any real damage,
both analysts said, the timing of the attack would have been kept much
more under wraps. And Iran would also have enlisted the help of its
proxy militias - Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza,
Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen and militia groups in Syria
and Iraq - in an attack that would have been closer to the Israeli
border. <It's very important [to note] that in this round, Hezbollah did
not enter into the fray in any serious way,> Vaez said, noting that a
more prominent interference from the militant group would have been far
more dangerous considering its armed capacity and geographical
proximity.
The axis of resistance
If, however, Israel decides to strike back on Iranian soil, there is a
real risk that Iran’s proxies, also known as the <axis of resistance>,
will be a part of Tehran's response. If Hezbollah gets involved, <we
will really end up in a regional war which would be catastrophic>, Vaez
said. Barnes-Dacey of the ECFR said that: <While there may be a sense of
confidence in Israel, it would likely be a mistake to imagine that Iran
won't unleash a far more impactful response to strikes on its own
territory which it will view in existential terms.> Following the
attack, Iran's permanent mission to the United Nations commented on the
X platform that the <matter [of the air strike on its Damascus
consulate] can be deemed concluded. However, should the Israeli regime
make another mistake, Iran's response will be considerably more severe>.
Conducted on the strength of Article 51 of the UN Charter pertaining to
legitimate defense, Iran's military action was in response to the
Zionist regime's aggression against our diplomatic premises in Damascus.

revenge. Iran says it has summoned the French, British and German envoys
after the three nations condemned its attack on Israel. The UN Security
Council met on Sunday after Israel requested the council condemn Iran's

Israeli ceasefire proposal. Israel wants to secure the return of
hostages seized by Hamas in the October 7 attacks but says it will not
stop its offensive until Hamas is destroyed as a military force. At
least 33,729 Palestinians have been killed and an estimated 76,371 have
