Samaneh Asghari
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 4 April 2024
<<Children's and Women's Rights Activist Samaneh Asghari
Transferred to Evin Prison in Tehran
Samaneh Asghari, a prominent advocate for children's and women's
rights, has been transferred to Evin Prison in Tehran to begin serving
her one-year imprisonment sentence. According to a report received by
the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights on Thursday, April 3, 2024,
Samaneh Asghari, formerly a member of the board of directors of the
Association for Supporting Children's Rights, was detained following a
summons to the Shahr-e Ray Courthouse and subsequently moved to Evin
Prison for the enforcement of her prison term. In November 2023, Branch
29 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced Samaneh Asghari to one
year in prison, considering her prior days of detention. Samaneh Asghari
was initially detained on September 14, 2023, by security forces at her
residence in Tehran. Following her arrest, she was held in Ward 209 of
Evin Prison, known as the Intelligence Ministry's Detention Center.
Later, on September 30, she was transferred to Qarchak Prison.
Subsequently, she was temporarily released on bail of one billion tomans
until the conclusion of the trial process on Thursday, October 3. A
graduate of Industrial Engineering from Kharazmi University, Samaneh
Asghari had previously been detained on October 11, 2022, during the
Women, Life, Freedom (Jin, Jiyan, Azadi) Movement. She was ultimately
released from Qarchak Prison on April 24 of the following year, after
spending six months and sixteen days in detention, following an <amnesty.>

Hundreds Extend Support to 11 Jailed Women's Rights Activists in
Iran
More than 350 civil society and women's rights activists have
voiced strong support for 11 women's rights activists detained in Gilan
province and demand the activists' immediate and unconditional release.
The statement, signed by 355 human rights and civil society activists,
condemns the harsh sentences imposed on the Gilan activists. Addressing
<repressive forces,> it declares that these verdicts exemplify the
Islamic Republic's resistance to legitimate demands for change. The
signatories criticize the <baseless accusations> against the Gilan
activists. They argue that the activists' unity embodies the true spirit
of the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, striving to preserve the gains
made through decades of struggle.
Lawyers representing the 11 activists arrested in Gilan report
that they have been sentenced to a combined total of over 60 years in
prison. Judge Mehdi Rasekhi, who presided over the trial, has sentenced
Zohreh Dadras to nine years, six months, and two days in prison.
Her alleged offense is <forming a group to act against national
security.> Ten other activists, including Forough Saminia, Sara Jahani,
Yasamin Hashdari, Shiva Shah Sia, Negin Rezaie, Azadeh Chavoshian, Matin
Yazdani, Hooman Taheri, and Jelveh Javaheri, are each sentenced to six
years and 47 days in prison for <assembly and collusion to act against
national security.> Additionally, Taheri and Javaheri each received
one-year sentences for <propaganda against the Islamic Republic.>
The trial started on February 29.
The activists were arrested on August 16 last year when security
forces raided their homes in the cities of Rasht, Anzali, Lahijan, and
Fuman. They were later released on bail from Lakan Prison in Rasht while
awaiting the outcome of their legal case.>>

Saeed Farrokhipour
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 3 April 2024
<<Father of a Teenage Slain Protester, Detained in Tehran
Saeed Farrokhipour, the father of Amir Mehdi Farrokhipour, a
teenage protester who was killed in the Women, Life, Freedom (Jin, Jiyan,
Azadi) movement, has been detained by the security forces of the Islamic
Republic of Iran in Tehran. According to a report received by the Hengaw
Organization for Human Rights, on Monday, April 1, 2024, Saeed
Farrokhipour, the father of the deceased Amir Mehdi Farrokhipour, was
detained at his son's gravesite in Behesht-e Zahra Cemetery in Tehran by
the security forces. Informed sources state that this individual was
transferred to an undisclosed location after being detained by the
security forces of the Islamic Republic, and his whereabouts and legal
status are still ambiguous.
Amir Mehdi Farrokhipour, a 17-year-old teenager, was targeted by
the security forces with direct gunfire during the Woman, Life, Freedom
movement in Laleh Park, Tehran, on September 27, 2022, and lost his life
the following day.>>

<<Iranian Political Prisoner Denied Treatment
Iranian prison authorities have denied Sedigheh Vasmaghi, a
political and social analyst arrested for violating hijab laws, from
receiving critical medical care. Prison officials blocked her transfer
to a hospital outside Tehran's Evin prison. Vasmaghi, who suffers from
high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, and severe chest pain,
received initial treatment at the prison clinic on April 2. However,
despite a doctor recommending further hospitalization, prison
authorities refused to facilitate her transfer. Vasmaghi was arrested by
security forces on March 16 and detained in Evin prison. She faces
charges of <propaganda against the Islamic Republic> and <public
appearance without hijab.> Her case is being heard by Branch 26 of the
Tehran Revolutionary Court. Since March 24, Vasmaghi has been denied
family visits due to her refusal to comply with mandatory hijab
regulations.>>

<<Iran Cracks Down on Teachers, Sack Them for Supporting Protests
Iranian authorities have fired teacher Sakineh Maleki for her
participation in the 2022 protests and teacher sit-ins, according to the
Iran Human Rights Campaign. Maleki, from Gilan province, was dismissed
for involvement in the Woman, Life, Freedom protests and teacher
demonstrations.
This incident marks a continuation of the government's crackdown
on educators who voiced dissent. In recent months, there has been a
pattern of retaliation against teachers who participated in protests. On
March 12, security forces banned Mohammad Moradi Nesari, an educator
from Sanandaj, from teaching. This action followed his publications of
Kurdish poetry books and interviews on the Kurdish language and
literature. Similarly, Sara Siahpour, a teacher in Alborz province, was
dismissed on February 19 for supporting public protests. On February 3,
2023, Mohammad Saeedi Abu Eshaghi, a teacher from Lordegan, lost his job
for expressing support for protests and sympathizing with families of
victims seeking justice.
These incidents come amidst a severe teacher shortage in the
Iranian education sector. To address the teacher shortfall, authorities
have reportedly brought thousands of religious students from seminaries
into schools. The Coordinating Council Teachers' Union criticized this
approach. In a statement on their Telegram channel, they called it a
<reactionary> move and a return to an outdated educational system. The
council argued that replacing experienced teachers with students and
clerics lacking expertise <purges schools of specialized teaching staff>
and harms children's education.>>

<<Iran Arrests One Journalist, Summons Another
Authorities of the Islamic Republic have summoned and arrested
two Iranian journalists, Hassan Abbasi and Hessam Abediha, due to their
critical reporting. Abediha was arrested on April 5, according to an
activist Telegram channel. The channel reported that Abediha's arrest is
linked to his reporting on a fraud case. Abediha was reportedly later
released on bail. According to the same source, before his arrest,
Abediha had criticized the handling of the fraud case by Qazvin's
judicial officials. These criticisms were made during online meetings
and in-person discussions involving judicial and government officials
from Qazvin. On the other hand, Hassan Abbasi recently shared a photo of
his summons from the Tehran Media Prosecutor's Office on X social media.
The charges against Abbasi involve <spreading lies through cyberspace.>

<<Iranian Sociologist Held in 'Inhumane' State at Damavand Prison
Saeed Madani, a 65-year-old sociologist and political prisoner,
is being held in <inhumane> conditions at Damavand Prison, sources tell
IranWire.
He was recently transferred from Evin Prison to Damavand. He is
said to have been denied basic facilities and kept in a cell within the
prison's quarantine ward, which lacks essential amenities. According to
IranWire sources, Madani is only allowed limited contact with his family
and only two hours of sunlight daily. On April 4, prison authorities
finally provided him with a bed in his quarantine cell. Sources in the
know of the situation reveal that Madani's cell lacks even minimal
sanitation and hygiene. Despite suffering from a stomach ailment for a
while, he has only recently been given his medication. He is deprived of
basic necessities like heating, a refrigerator, a television, or a
radio. In January 2022, Madani received a nine-year prison sentence from
the Revolutionary Court. The charges against him included <forming and
leading anti-establishment groups,> <conspiracy to undermine national
security,> and <propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran.> Judge
Ali Mazloum of Branch 29 convicted Madani of the first two charges:
<forming anti-government groups> and <propaganda against the Islamic
Republic.> He sentenced Madani to eight years for the first charge and
one year for the second, totaling nine years. The accusations stemmed
primarily from Madani's public writings analyzing and describing various
aspects of contemporary Iranian society. The sociologist was arrested in
May last year. Since then, He has been held in Evin prison under a
temporary detention order. Madani's research focuses on social movements
and social issues such as addiction, domestic violence, prostitution,
and child abuse.>>

Sepideh Qoliyan
Iranwire - 5 April 2024
<<Noted Iranian Activist Begins Hunger Strike in Prison
Sepideh Qoliyan, a prominent civil rights activist imprisoned in
Tehran's Evin Prison, began a hunger strike on April 3 for prison
transfer. Her demand is to be transferred to Ahvaz Prison, located
closer to her hometown. A source close to Qoliyan's family confirmed the
hunger strike to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA). Qoliyan
was initially detained during a workers' strike in November 2018 and
later sentenced to 19 years and six months in prison. The sentence was
reduced to five years on appeal. The activist was released on March 15,
2023, after being granted <amnesty>. However, she was soon re-arrested
after shouting outside Tehran's Evin prison, <Khamenei the Zahhak! We'll
take you down into the grave.> She referred to a mythical king who was
said to have fed serpents growing out of his shoulders with young
people's brains. In May 2023, Qoliyan was sentenced to two years
imprisonment for <insulting> Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.>>

Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 4 April 2024
<<Ongoing Crackdown on the Kurdish Participants in Nawroz
Celebrations by Iranian Authorities.
In the ongoing crackdown on the participants of the Nawroz
celebrations in Kurdistan, Faraj Arsen, from the Malakashahi district of
Ilam province, was detained by Iranian Islamic Republic security forces
and transferred to an undisclosed location. According to a report
received by the Hengaw organization for Human Rights, at 9 a.m. on
Wednesday, April 3rd, 2024, intelligence forces of the Revolutionary
Guards raided Faraj Arsen's residence in Malakashahi city, Ilam
province, and apprehended him. Hengaw has learned that Faraj Arsen was
arrested in connection with special Nawroz celebrations that have been
taking place despite threats and prohibition from security forces in
various parts of Ilam, including Malakashahi, Karzan, and Holeylan. As
of the time of compiling this report, there is no precise information
about the custodial state and whereabouts of Faraj Arsen, and his

Iran executes 853 people
Iranwire - 4 April 2024
<<'Sites of Mass Killings': Iran Executed Record 853 in 2023,
Says Amnesty
The Islamic Republic's authorities executed at least 853 people
in 2023, the highest number in eight years, Amnesty International
reports. The Iranian authorities have persisted with their
state-sanctioned killing spree which has turned prisons into <sites of
mass killings,> Amnesty said.
In 2023, there was a 48 percent increase compared to the previous
year, with drug-related charges accounting for 56 percent of the
executions, as per the report. Two other NGOs, Iran Human Rights (IHR)
and Together Against the Death Penalty (ECPM), published a report last
month giving the slightly lower figure of 834 people executed in 2023.
At least 481 executions, accounting for more than half, were for drug
offenses; these were carried out under the guise of fighting drug
trafficking.
Discriminatory practices are also highlighted in the report.
While the Baluch minority makes up only five percent of Iran's
population, they suffered a disproportionate share of drug-related
executions: 29 percent or 138 people. The report suggests that the
Iranian government intensified executions during the Woman, Life,
Freedom protests to instill fear among the population. Amnesty
International emphasizes that these numbers likely underestimate the
true scale of the problem, as many executions, particularly for drug
offenses and security charges, are carried out in secrecy. <The death
penalty is abhorrent in all circumstances but deploying it on a mass
scale for drug-related offenses after grossly unfair trials before
Revolutionary Courts is a grotesque abuse of power,> said Diana Eltahawy,
Amnesty's deputy regional director for the Middle East and North
Africa.>>

<<Iran Prosecutes Over 90 Media Professionals This Year
Further diminishing Iran's press freedom, the Islamic Republic
has prosecuted at least 91 journalists, media activists, and media
outlets in the first quarter of 2024. Defending Free Flow of
Information, a non-profit advocating for freedom of expression, reports
that at least 12 journalists and media activists were subjected to
arbitrary arrests during this period. Three were imprisoned, while nine
were summoned by judicial or security institutions.
Additionally, security forces raided a journalist's home, and
another media outlet's assets were confiscated. The report also revealed
that a news agency fired a photographer for criticizing the government.
As many as 24 journalists and media managers, including seven women and
17 men, were sentenced to a cumulative 14 years and seven months in
prison, various bans, including doing journalism, social media, and
leaving the country, and exile in some cases. The report emphasized that
these figures likely represent an undercount, as they only reflect
documented and verified cases.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) also identified Iran
as the sixth-worst jailer of journalists globally in January 2024,
following China, Myanmar, Belarus, Russia, and Vietnam.>>

<<Iranian Activist Samaneh Asghari Begins Prison Term
Iranian women and children rights activist Samaneh Asghari has
begun serving a one-year prison sentence, her husband says. Ismail
Nazari, the activist's spouse, said in an Instagram post on April 3 that
Asghari went to the prosecutor's office in Tehran and was transferred to
Evin prison.
In November 2022, the Islamic Republic's judiciary sentenced
Asghari, a student at Kharazmi University in Tehran, to one year in
prison. This sentence included time already served in detention. Six
male police officers and a female agent, who falsely identified as water
department officials, apprehended Asghari. The student activist spent 35
days in solitary confinement at Ward 209 of Evin Prison. After
interrogation, she was transferred to Qarchak Varamin prison, where she
remained until their initial release. Originally sentenced to 18 years
and three months by Judge Abolqasem Salavati of Branch 15 of the Tehran
Revolutionary Court, Asghari was released from Qarchak Prison under a
judicial amnesty decree. Security forces rearrested Asghari from her
Tehran house on September 14, 2023. She was again detained in Ward 209
of Evin Prison and was later released on bail.>>

<<Attackers of Iranian Journalist in London Escape UK
Three individuals connected to the stabbing of an Iranian
journalist in London are believed to have fled the United Kingdom within
hours of the attack, police say. Pouria Zeraati, 36, a presenter for
Iran International TV channel, sustained a leg injury during the assault
in Wimbledon on March 29. He has since been released from hospital. He
was stabbed on a residential street by two men who departed the scene in
a vehicle driven by a third individual, as reported by the Metropolitan
Police. The vehicle was abandoned shortly after the incident and is
currently being examined by forensic science experts. The Metropolitan
Police said that following the desertion of the vehicle, the individuals
traveled to London's Heathrow Airport and departed from the UK. <As a
result of a very comprehensive investigation, at pace, we have
identified three suspects who we believe, left the UK within hours of
the attack,> said Dominic Murphy, head of the Met's Counter Terrorism
Command. <We have established that after abandoning the vehicle, the
suspects travelled to Heathrow Airport and have left the UK. We are now
working with international partners to establish further details,> he
explained. <I must reiterate that we are still at an early stage of our
investigation, we do not know the reason why this victim was attacked
and there could be a number of explanations for this. All lines of
enquiry are being pursued and we are keeping an open mind on any
potential motivation for the attack,> he added. While the motive remains
unclear, the reported attack comes just a few months after the
revelation of a plot by the Islamic Republic to assassinate two other
Iran International journalists. In November 2022, London Police
protected Iran International's offices after having received
intelligence of actual threats against two of the channel's journalists
in London. In early 2023, the network was forced to temporarily cease
operations in London and relocate its broadcasting studios to
Washington. The channel's operations resumed at a new London location in
September of that year. Iranian Intelligence Minister Ismail Khatib said
in an interview with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's website in late 2022
that those who work with Iran International TV would be <pursued> by his
ministry. <From now on, any kind of connection with this terrorist
organization will be considered tantamount to entering the field of
terrorism and a threat to national security,> he said.
Volant Media, Iran International's broadcaster, said in a
statement at the time that two British-Iranian journalists working in
Britain had received <death threats from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard
Corps (IRCG).> It described the threats as a <dangerous escalation> of
attempts by the Islamic Republic to silence media in the face of
nationwide protests.>>
