Iranwire - 28 March 2024
<<Kurdish Singer Abbaszadeh Faces Arrest Again
Iranian security forces have detained Kurdish singer Mohammad
Abbaszadeh, according to a report by the Hengaw Organization for Human
Rights.
The 35-year-old from Ilam province was reportedly arrested upon
returning from Nowruz celebrations in Shuhan city. His current
whereabouts and condition are unknown. This is not the first time
Abbaszadeh has faced persecution by Iranian authorities. In October
2022, he was detained for singing a protest song. Released on bail a
month later, he received a suspended sentence of two years'
imprisonment, a travel ban, and a fine.
In April 2023, Abbaszadeh faced more charges for criticizing
chemical attacks on schools on social media platforms. The poisonings
had started in late November 2022, causing anxiety among parents and
students. Some Iranians have suggested that the poisonings could be an
attempt to force the closure of girls' schools or a retaliation for
students and women leading anti-government demonstrations. While Iranian
political figures and activists have described the wave of poisonings as
<chemical> and <biological> attacks, officials have only admitted there
may be a problem.>>

<<Kurdish Political Prisoner Moved to Solitary in Iran, Execution
Fears Rise
Iranian authorities have transferred Kurdish political prisoner
Nayeb Askari to solitary confinement at Urmia prison, sparking concerns
over his imminent execution. A close relative of Askari confirmed his
relocation within the prison to the HRANA news agency. The motive behind
the transfer remains unclear, but it aligns with the standard procedure
of Iranian authorities to move inmates on death row to solitary
confinement before execution. He was initially sentenced to death in
April 2023 on charges of <waging war against God.> After a successful
appeal for a retrial, the charges were changed to <rebellion.> However,
in October 2023, the court reaffirmed the death sentence, reportedly in
absentia of his lawyer.
The charges stem from Askari's alleged affiliation with a Kurdish
opposition party. Askari was arrested in March 2021 by Islamic
Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) intelligence agents in Urmia. According
to the Iran Human Rights organization's report, the Islamic Republic
executed approximately 834 individuals last year.>>

<<Bail Denied to Iranian Rapper Who Supported 2022 Protests
Judicial authorities of the Islamic Republic have denied Iranian
rapper Toomaj Salehi's lawyer's request to dismiss his temporary
detention order.
According to a post on Salehi's X social media account, run by
his relatives abroad, one reason cited for the denial is the <corruption
on Earth> charge in his indictment. This serious charge carries the
potential punishment of execution. The post further said that the
authorities believe Salehi's release would be a <disturbance of public
order.> Other reasons behind denying bail include <fear of collusion
with others,> the need for <easy access> to Salehi, and the risk of him
<escaping.> Salehi was initially arrested in October 2022 after making
public statements in support of the nationwide Woman, Life, Freedom
protests that had erupted the previous month. He released songs
criticizing the government and supporting the protests demanding more
freedoms and women's rights. He also posted pictures and videos of
himself during the demonstrations. In July 2023, a court sentenced the
artist to six years and three months in prison for <corruption on
Earth.> He was released on bail on November 18, 2023, after the Supreme
Court, responding to an appeal, found <flaws in the original sentence.>
It returned the case to a lower court for a reexamination and possible
retrial. Salehi was returned to jail less than two weeks later to face
new charges after publicly talking about his torture in prison in a
video.>>

<<Iranian Couple's Arrest in Türkiye Raises Deportation Fear
The recent arrest of a Kurdish political refugee couple in
Turkiye has sparked fears of their deportation to Iran, with human
rights groups urging international intervention. Reshad Mohammadi, a
Kurdish activist from Kamiyaran, and his wife, Azhin Fahmideh Hosseini,
were arrested by Turkish police recently, according to the Hengaw
Organization for Human Rights. Their current location is unknown, but
they were last seen being taken to a camp near Canakkale. Mohammadi, 34,
and Hosseini, 30, were reportedly active in Kurdish political circles in
the Kurdistan Region of Iraq for several years. Facing pressure from
Iranian security forces, they were forced to flee and seek refuge in
Türkiye, with the eventual goal of reaching Europe.
The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights expressed concern about
the couple's potential deportation to Iran. <They risk torture and other
inhuman treatment> at the hands of Iranian authorities, the group said.
The organization has called for urgent intervention by human rights
organizations and international bodies, particularly those focused on
refugee support. The deportation of asylum seekers, refugees, and
political and civil activists living in Turkiye to Iran has seen a
worrisome surge in recent years. United Nations refugee officials have
also reduced their activities and now defer the handling of refugees to
the Turkish government. Previously, the Turkish government deported
political activist Shahryar Baratinya to Iran, leading to his
imprisonment in Evin Prison since August 3, following his deportation.>>

political activist from Kamiyaran, and his wife, Azhin Fahmideh Hosseini,
from Sarvabad county in Marivan city, were apprehended by Turkish police
in recent days. They have since been taken to a camp near the city of

Azhin Fahmideh Hosseini, aged 30, and Rashad Mohammadi, aged 34,
have been actively involved in political activities in the Kurdistan
region of Iraq for several years. They were compelled to flee the region
due to persistent pressure from Iranian security forces, seeking refuge

Organization for Human Rights expresses deep concern over the potential
deportation of this Kurdish couple to Iran, where they may face torture
and other inhumane treatment at the hands of the security forces of the
Islamic Republic of Iran. Urgent attention is called for from human
rights organizations and international bodies, especially those
