PIC Tunesia - Breaking silence of fear
Jinha - 8 Dec 2023 - by ZOUHOUR MECHERGUI
<<'Tunisian women should break the barriers of silence and fear'
Tunisia- Since the beginning of 2023, 27 women have been killed in Tunisia, most of them were the victims of domestic violence, according to the official figures. In the country, women’s organizations and feminists carry out awareness-raising activities to end violence against women and femicide. Tunisian women activists believe that awareness-raising activities are insufficient to end violence against women and femicide and that a law protecting women and girls is a must. Jalila Al-Obaidi believes that online hate speech targeting women is not a new phenomenon but has existed for years. Tunisian human rights activist Yusra Gaaloul thinks that hate speech targeting women may result in femicide.
'Television programs normalize violence'
Speaking about the television programs that spread hate speech targeting women, Jalila Al-Obaidi said, <Such programs normalize violence against women. Violence against women is normalized by the patriarchal society through the media. The official authorities monitoring, regulating, and sanctioning radio and television broadcasts remain silent against these programs. Hate speech spread by the media forces women to internalize and accept violence. One of the reasons for the increase in violence against women and femicide is these programs.> Jalila Al-Obaidi emphasized that women are subjected to hate speech just because they are women. <Violence against women is remembered only on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and this is unacceptable. The pain, suffering and problems of women are emphasized during the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence campaign.>
'Women should break the barriers of silence and fear'
Jalila Al-Obaidi criticized the silence against sexual violence against women. <Many women still fear the stigma of reporting sexual abuse in Tunisia. Our society thinks that women are subjected to sexual violence and rape because of their appearance, their clothes and their words. If survivors of sexual violence decide to speak out against sexual violence, they face accusations. Women should break the barriers of silence and fear to eliminate all forms of violence against women. Law 58 was passed to protect women against violence; however, it has not been effectively implemented.>
'Law 58 must be amended'
In 2017, the Tunisian Parliament adopted Law 58 Tunisia passed Law 58 in 2017 to tackle violence against women. Speaking about Law 58, Tunisian human rights activist Yusra Gaaloul said, <Law 58 was passed by the Tunisian Parliament to protect women against violence; however, it has not been effectively implemented. For the effective implementation of law, appropriate and simplified mechanisms should be provided and the necessary budget should be allocated. Law 58 must be amended to end hate speech targeting women.> >>

Yemen - Activists against domestic violence
Jinha - 7 Dec 2023 - by RANIA ABDULLAH
<<Domestic workers in Yemen marginalized
Yemen - Working as a domestic worker is considered one of the worst professions in Yemen. Most domestic workers in the country are women. They are marginalized in society because they are women having dark skin. They receive very low wages and they are deprived of their legal rights.
'They are deprived of their rights'
In an interview with NuJINHA, Yemeni activist Ghadeer Al-Adani said that women working in the cleaning sector are deprived of their rights. <Most of domestic workers are women and they are marginalized and face discrimination. They are subjected to verbal and physical violence. Most domestic workers are illiterate. Poor girls and women are deprived of education. Domestic workers have to work even if they are sick or pregnant. They also receive low wages.>
'Domestic workers do not receive a monthly salary'
Misk al-Maqrami, a human rights activist and head of the Kefaya Foundation for the Rehabilitation of Marginalized Women, said that women working in the cleaning sector face social pressures. <Domestic workers do not have access to paid sick leave, paid family leave, disability-related leave, vacation time, and other forms of paid time off. They also do not receive a monthly salary. Most of them are undocumented workers and they receive a daily wage.>
She is the only breadwinner of her family
Reem Saeed is one of the domestic workers in Yemen. She has been working as a domestic worker in the Al Dawah neighborhood of Taiz, Yemen, for nine years. Although she begins to work early in the morning until noon, she earns only 50 dollars every month. Although she wanted to complete her education, she had to work for her family of seven. <I had to work to support my family. My monthly wage is insufficient to cover our most basic needs. I am the only breadwinner of my family. Even if my wage is insufficient, I have to work as a domestic worker. I am subjected to all kinds of bullying, verbal and physical violence while working. I am subjected to insults while walking the streets by passers-by, merchants, and shop owners. I feel like I am marginalized by society.> >>

Family hungerstrikers
Jinha - 6 Dec 2023 - by MEDINE MAMEDOGLU
<<Families of hunger strikers: Their demands are the demands of millions
Amed- On November 27, thousands of political prisoners in Turkey initiated a rotational hunger strike demanding <freedom for Abdullah Ocalan and a resolution to the Kurdish question.> Their families have held a protest in Amed (Diyarbakır), Mersin and Adana since December 3 to support the hunger strike initiated by the political prisoners. Every day, they gather and issue a press statement to make the voices of hunger strikers heard.
In Amed, the families of the hunger strikers gathered in the building of the Association for Assistance to Prisoners' Families (TUAY-DER) yesterday. Expressing their solidarity with the hunger strikers, the families called for the end of the isolation imposed on Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan and all political prisoners.
'The isolation has been imposed on the whole society'
Halime Topuz was one of the women gathered in the building to be in solidarity with her son İhsan Topuz, one of the hunger strikers held in Kırşehir S-type Closed Prison. Her son has been held in prison for 26 years. <Today, we gather here to say no to the rights violations against our children in prison. We were not allowed to issue a press statement in front of the building. The isolation has been imposed not only on Imrali prison or other prisons but also on the whole society. The isolation imposed on Mr. Abdullah Ocalan must end. If the isolation imposed on him does not end, prisoners will be subjected to more rights violations and torture,> she told NuJINHA.
'We will do our best to make their voices heard'
Halime Topuz emphasized that they, as the families of the hunger strikers, would do their best to make their children's voices heard. <Previously, they went on a hunger strike for six months. We supported their hunger strike and we will support their hunger strike again. I call on all Kurdish families and patriotic people to support us. We are here and we will always stand with our children.>
'We are here to make their voices heard'
Meryem Soylu's daughter is one of the hunger strikers. <No one should remain silent against brutal policies carried out against the Kurdish people. The political prisoners started a hunger strike to end these policies. Today, we are here to make their voices heard. Sick prisoners are denied medical treatment and the prisoners are not released despite having completed their sentence. All Kurdish families and people should say no to the isolation. If we break this isolation, the hunger strike will end. We should break the isolation imposed in Imrali prison and other prisons,> Meryem Soylu said.
In an interview with NuJINHA, Hatice Guneş, co-chair of the TUAY-DER Amed Branch, talked about the action started by the families. <Today, an isolation has been imposed not only on Mr. Abdullah Ocalan but also on women and the whole society. The prisoners are subjected to torture. We support the action started by the families of prisoners. We will always stand with the families and the prisoners. Today, no one can express his/her opinion freely. When you speak out, you are arrested and oppressed. This isolation must be broken.> >>

<<Women's Coalition: Women should be able to participate in politics
News Center- Women in Turkey gained their rights to vote and enter politics on December 5, 1934. Today marks the 89th anniversary of the recognition of women's rights to vote and stand for election. In a statement, the Women's Coalition, an independent women's platform in Turkey, emphasized that women should be able to participate in politics with all their differences.
'Representation is not sufficient'
Indicating that representation is not sufficient, the statement said that women's political participation is important to <protect our living spaces, to make women’s labor visible, to care about each other's problems, to see our differences and be against all kinds of discrimination, to be those who create life, not those who are included, not only to participate in politics but to transform politics.>
'A law guaranteeing equal political participation should be enacted'
Indicating that equal political participation is a civil right, the coalition said, <We have been advocating for years that a law guaranteeing equal political participation should be enacted. We announce that we will support female candidates defending gender equality in the local elections to be held in March 2024. We will keep struggling until we all achieve equality and freedom.> >>

Arab States Civil Society Organizations and Feminist Network
Jinha - 5 Dec 2023
<<Women's organizations demand investigation into <sexual crimes> against Palestinian women
News Center- Arab States Civil Society Organizations and Feminist Network released a written statement regarding sexual crimes committed against Palestinian women in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Expressing their profound concern regarding the recent statement issued by UN Women concerning the situation in Palestine and Israel, Palestinian women and civil society organizations said, <Over the past 50 days, UN Women has consistently supported calls for an integral independent investigation regarding the allegations of gender-based violence (GBV) and sexual abuse on October 7. However, the statement did not address the ongoing refusal of the Israeli occupation to cooperate with various international investigation commissions appointed by the United Nations to probe into the crimes committed against Palestinian women in the past. Consequently, Israel's rejection of initiating an international investigation is a matter that should draw the attention and raise concerns of all institutions and commissions dedicated to achieving justice for the victims and holding the perpetrators accountable.>
No independent, impartial investigation into gender-based-violence and sexual violence
Emphasizing the lack of initiation of an independent, impartial investigation into gender-based violence (GBV) and sexual violence, the statement addressed the statement of UN Women saying, <We are alarmed by the numerous accounts of gender-based atrocities and sexual violence during October 7 attacks.> The written statement by the Arab States Civil Society Organizations and Feminist Network titled, <Protest and Condemnation Memorandum> criticized the statement of UN Women. <By issuing such a statement, which relies on uncertainties and unproven evidence (it appears that political motives may be influencing it), UN Women appears to deviate from its jurisdiction and procedures. The protection of women and girls should remain at the core of its mission. Moreover, UN Women has not issued any statement expressing concern or alarm regarding the instances of gender-based violence (GBV) and sexual violence committed by Israeli soldiers and settlers against Palestinian women. Numerous cases of such crimes have been officially documented in previous years, including testimonies from Palestinian prisoners released after October 7, reporting instances of GBV and sexual abuse by Israeli guardians. This includes documented cases of sexual verbal abuse by Israeli settlers against Palestinian women. UN Women did not express alarm regarding the sexual violence and physical searches carried out by Israeli soldiers at Shifaat Military Checkpoint (one of the checkpoints isolating Jerusalem from its surroundings) against Palestinian women. In a similar context, Israeli soldiers compelled four Palestinian women to undress at a checkpoint inside the Old City of Hebron. We assert that the application of physical violence against Palestinian women, during arrest, investigation, and the threat of rape by Israeli soldiers, constitutes one of the numerous forms of GBV and sexual abuse requiring condemnation by various international agencies and institutions, with UN Women at the forefront.
UN Women should demonstrate a steadfast commitment
While acknowledging the considerable pressure on UN Women, we firmly believe that it should demonstrate a steadfast commitment to International Law, International Humanitarian Law, and International Criminal Law. Additionally, it should adhere to the principles of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda, which are founded on the protection of women during armed conflicts and instances of foreign occupation. We emphasize the implementation of the principle of no impunity for perpetrators and the equal treatment of all, without bias.>
<We condemn all forms of gender-based violence>
Condemning all forms of gender-based violence and sexual abuse against women, the statement said, <We urge for conducting an independent and impartial investigation concerning the alleged cases. Furthermore, we denounce the statement from UN Women, which lacks evidence and reproduces the Israeli narrative, seen as one of the tools within the war against Palestinians.> In the statement, the organizations strongly urge UN WOMEN to schedule a meeting with UN Women, represented by its executive director, to discuss its role in advocating for the rights of women without discrimination; to hear first-hand testimonies from Palestinian women, including released women prisoners and other women who have experienced sexual harassment and abuse at the hands of Israeli soldiers and settlers in the West Bank; to actively endorse international initiatives to establish investigation committees concerning sexual crimes and acts of genocide perpetrated by the Israeli occupation in both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Additionally, it should advocate for expediting the investigation process of these crimes, through the International Criminal Court.>>

<<'Victims of sexual violence need justice'
Cairo- <I was subjected to sexual violence by my uncle for years. I left home at a young age to get rid of it. I still cannot tell my family why I left home to study in another province,> said a victim of sexual violence in Egypt. Her story is the story of hundreds of women in Egypt. Many women still fear the stigma of reporting sexual abuse in Egypt despite the efforts of feminists and activists to raise awareness about it. Victims of sexual violence face obstacles that force them to remain silent and not report it. Sarah Jamal, lawyer and a volunteer at the Sanad, a feminist initiative offering legal support to victims of violence in Egypt, thinks that sexual violence is a taboo that cannot be spoken out in Egypt. <Many victims of sexual violence still fear the stigma of reporting it. They are afraid of being blamed by society. Girls and women should be encouraged to speak out about sexual violence; they should not remain silent against it. Awareness-raising activities is one of the tools that encourage girls and women to speak out about sexual violence. Providing legal support to them is another tool. As Sanad, we provide legal and psychological support to victims of violence and encourage them to speak out about sexual violence.> Pointing out that women's organizations demand a unified law protecting women against all forms of violence, Sarah Jamal said, <There is no effective law that protects girls and women from domestic violence and encourages victims of domestic violence to speak out about it. Carrying out awareness-raising activities against violence will achieve justice.>
'Victims of violence need safe spaces'
Sabreen Ismail, project coordinator at the Alrowwad (Pioneers for Life) Cultural and Arts Society in Alexandria Governorate, told NuJINHA that NGOs and women's organizations carry out awareness-raising activities to combat all forms of violence against women, including sexual violence. <Victims of sexual violence are afraid of reporting it. They need support to speak out about sexual violence. They also need safe spaces that protect them and keep their locations confidential.> Pointing out that survivors of sexual violence are blamed for sexual assaults, Sabreen Ismail said, <Girls and women are scared, embarrassed, humiliated, or ashamed to report sexual violence in Egypt because they are blamed for provoking men.>
'Victims of sexual violence need justice'
Alrowwad (Pioneers for Life) Cultural and Arts Society holds workshops on violence against women. <Most of the girls and women participating in the workshops say that they are subjected to violence on public transportation. More awareness-raising activities should be carried out for the victims of sexual violence. Victims of sexual violence need justice.> >>

<<80% of Avrîn Hospital in Shahba out of service
Shahba- In 2018, Shahba opened its doors to the displaced people of Afrin after Afrin was occupied by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions. The displaced people of Afrin built a new life in the canton with the support of the people of Shahba. However, the Syrian government forces have imposed a siege on the canton, obstructing the access to fuel and other essential supplies to the canton. 80% of Avrîn Hospital in the canton is out of service due to the lack of fuel and medical supplies. NuJINHA spoke to Eliya Mihemed, Co-chair of Afrin-Shahba Health Organization, about the siege imposed by the Syrian government forces on the region.
'The aim is to depopulate the region'
<The Syrian government forces have imposed a siege on the region for a long time. The ongoing siege makes everything more difficult for everyone. The aim of the siege is to depopulate the region. This year, the Syrian government forces do not even allow vital supplies to enter the region. Avrîn Hospital in the region has stopped admitting new patients due to the shortages of medical supplies and fuel. It only admits emergency patients.>
'We make great efforts to overcome the siege'
In the region, colds, flus and other respiratory illnesses are more common during the winter; however, sick people cannot receive treatment. <The number of the people suffering from colds, flus and other respiratory illnesses are increasing; however, our hospital cannot provide health service to them due to the siege. 80% of the hospital is now out of service due to the lack of fuel and medical supplies. We make great efforts to overcome the siege but our efforts are insufficient to lift the siege.>
'Pressure must be put on the Syrian government'
Eliya Muhammad called on the international health organizations to <put pressure on the Syrian government to lift the siege. Health is a fundamental human right. The Syrian government violates this right in Shahba. If the siege is not lifted, it will impose serious threats to public health.> >>

Courses on human rights

<<PYD Women's Office organizes courses on women’s rights
Qamishlo- The Democratic Union Party (Partiya Yekitiya Demokrat,PYD) Women's Office has organized awareness-raising activities for women since it was founded in 2003. NuJINHA spoke to Zeynep Hasan, a member of the office, about the activities of the office. One of the decisions taken during the first conference of the PYD was the establishment of a women's committee. In 2018, the committee became a women's office having its own committees.
'Women organize themselves under the umbrella of the PYD'
<Women organize themselves under the umbrella of the PYD. There are many unions affiliated to the PYD such as the Union of Workers, the Union of Teachers, and the Union of Doctors. Each union has a women's office supporting women. The women’s office develops projects for women and collects donations to meet the needs of women and children. The Women's office has branches in all regions of North and East Syria.>
Cihan Hussein: Women participate in international forums to make their voices heard
Cihan Huseyin, member of the PYD Diplomacy Committee, thinks diplomacy has an important role for all organizations and women. <The revolution in Rojava gives an opportunity to women to play their role. Since the beginning of the revolution, women have been playing a leading role. The diplomacy committee of women's movements in North and East Syria aims to achieve security, stability and awareness in neighboring countries. Our primary duty is to work to activate the role of women in society, especially in the revolution and support women to take their stolen rights back.>
Cihan Huseyin emphasized that women participate in international forums to make their voices heard despite the policies against them. <Today, women make their voices heard and discuss the Kurdish question by participating in international forums,> Cihan Huseyin said, calling on all women to have a say against customs, traditions, and policies that prevent them from playing their role in society. <Women having a free will can take their rights back. Rights are not given but taken. We should struggle to take our rights.>
Taliba Ismail, member of the Education Committee, thinks education is important for women to play their role in society. <After the revolution in Rojava, we realized that women need education in order to play their role in society. We have organized courses and programs for women so that they can play their role. Leader Abdullah Ocalan says that education is like water and air for every individual. I call on all women in North and East Syria to give importance to education in order to build a free and democratic society.> >>

<<Women of Afrin and Shahba: We resist despite the siege
Shahba- The Syrian government has imposed a siege on Shahba for a long time. Due to the siege, civilians, including internally displaced people of Afrin have faced severe shortages of fuel and aid. The Syrian government controls the entry of essential supplies, such as fuel, flour and humanitarian aid to the region. Due to the lack of fuel, the people in the region have had no electricity for a week. In addition, Avrin Hospital in the region has stopped taking new patients due to the shortages of medicine and fuel. NuJINHA spoke to women of Afrin, who have lived in Shahba since the Turkish occupation in Afrin, and women of Shahba.
'We live in darkness'
Fatime Ibiş, one of the displaced women of Afrin, wants to return to her homeland. <We have been living in Shahba for six years. We endure all the difficult living conditions because we want to return to our homeland. This year, the Syrian government has intensified its siege on the region. We have had no electricity for a week; we live in darkness. If fuel is run out, the bakeries will be closed and water will be cut off. The hospital has stopped taking new patients due to the lack of fuel. We demand the siege be lifted. We will keep resisting. The Syrian government should know very well that they cannot break our strong will.>
'We will not leave our homeland to the enemy'
Hayfa Elo, one of the women of Shahba, told us that they cannot buy even their basic needs due to high prices of products. <We live in Shahba with the displaced people of Afrin. We cannot buy even our basic needs due to high prices of products. We do not know what we can do when our children get sick because there is no medication. We live in darkness because we have had no electricity for a week. We burn household items and plastic to keep our children warm. Despite everything, we will not leave our homeland to the enemy.> >>

<<At least 101 children killed in West Bank in 2023
News Center- Save the Children published a press release on November 30. At least 101 Palestinian children have been killed in the West Bank in 2023, said the press release. Since the attacks in Israel on 7 October, Israeli soldiers or settlers have killed at least 63 children in the West Bank, according to the UN, averaging more than one child a day. During this same period, the UN has reported that some 143 families, including 388 children, have been displaced from their homes in the West Bank due to settler violence and access restrictions. <The number of Palestinian children killed in the West Bank by Israeli soldiers or settlers this year is now three times the number killed in 2022 - itself previously the deadliest year on record since 2005 - when 36 children were killed. At least 39 Israeli children have been reportedly killed this year,> said Save the Children. In the press release, Save the Children expressed concern that child and wider civilian casualties will continue to rise across the occupied Palestinian territory. <The escalation of violence in Gaza has been mirrored by increased control measures and violence in the West Bank including East Jerusalem, with ongoing unrest keeping children out of school, and restricting their access to vital services, including healthcare.>
Call for an immediate end to use of force against children
<While all eyes have been on the conflict in Gaza, there has been no pause in the killing of children in the West Bank, where the situation continues to deteriorate,> said Jason Lee, director for the Palestinian Territories for Save the Children. <The longer the killing of civilians in Gaza continues, the higher the likelihood that this will continue to spread into the West Bank where children are already seeing their rights eviscerated. Children must always be protected. Save the Children is calling for an immediate end to the excessive use of force against children by Israeli forces.> He also said, <It is long past time to stop violations against children's rights, and to provide long-lasting safety to children in Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel. Anything else will fail to provide them with the future they deserve.> >>
