<<Tunisian women to protest violence against women
The murders of a woman, her mother and her uncle by her husband on Sunday spark anger in Tunisia. The Tunisian Association of Democratic Women will hold a protest against the increase in gender-based violence.
Tunisia- On Sunday, a man killed his wife, mother-in-law and uncle-in-law in Tunis, Tunisia's capital, after his wife filed a divorce case against him. The murders of the woman, her mother and her uncle spark anger in Tunisia. According to the local reports, the woman had filed a criminal complaint against her husband after receiving death threats from him. However, police officers did not launch an investigation because there were <no traces>.
The Association of Democratic Women of Tunisia (ATFD), an independent feminist organization based in Tunis, has released a written statement condemning the incident. <The primary reason for the increase in violence against women is the patriarchal mindset,> said the statement. <The second reason is that the authorities do not take the necessary precautions to prevent violence.> According to the statement, 25 women were killed in Tunisia in 2023. In the statement, the ATFD calls on Tunisian people to join a march to be held today at 9pm from the Listening and Guidance Center for Women Victims of Violence to the Municipal Theatre of Tunis.
'Perpetrators must be given deterrent penalties'
NuJINHA spoke to women activists in Tunisia about the increase in violence against women and femicide. <Femicide is a widespread phenomenon in Tunisian society,> said Faten Abdel Kafi, a feminist activist in Tunisia. Recalling the killing of Rebekah Al-Sharni by her husband, she said, <Tunisian women are killed every day because Law No. 58 on the elimination of violence against women in Tunisia fails to protect women. When women are subjected to violence, they go to police stations to report it; however, they are not listened to. Police officers do not believe in women survivors of violence. Perpetrators must be given deterrent penalties to eliminate violence against women.> The Listening and Guidance Center for Women Victims of Violence provides psychological and legal support to women survivors of violence, feminist activist Lilia Al-Alawini told NuJINHA. <Every day, women survivors of violence apply to the center. We do our best to support them so that they can rebuild their lives. The government should provide financial support to women survivors of violence so that women can achieve their economic independence.> >>

<<Spokesperson of Mala Jin: Our aim is to save women from patriarchy
<Our aim is to save women from patriarchy, slavery and the tribal system,> said Yasmîn Îsa, Spokesperson of Mala Jin (Women's House) in the El-Teyi neighborhood of Qamishlo.
Qamishlo- Following the revolution that took place in North and East Syria in 2011, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) and Kongra Star, an umbrella organization of women's organizations in northeastern Syria, established many organizations for women. Mala Jin (English: Women's House) is one of these organizations. Having branches in all cities of North and East Syria, Mala Jin has also a branch in the El-Teyi neighborhood of Qamishlo.
'We opened the branch after a year of work'
Yasmin Isa, Spokesperson of Mala Jin in the neighborhood, told NuJINHA that they had opened the branch of Mala Jin in the neighborhood after working for a year. <After the liberation of the neighborhood, the branch was opened with the support of the AANES and Kongra Star. At the beginning, we faced some challenges because some Arab people did not allow women to participate in the labor force due to the patriarchal mindset in society.>
'Education changed Arab men'
After opening the branch in the neighborhood, the members of the branch performed home visits. <We told the philosophy of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan to the people. Slowly, the people trust us and allowed women to work with us and participate in activities. Arab men told us, <After getting to know your thoughts, philosophy, culture and society, our mentality towards you changed. Actually, education changed Arab men,> said Yasmîn Isa.
'Our aim is to save women from slavery'
The members of Mala Jin work in coordination with the commune in the neighborhood to solve the problems faced by women. <Our aim is to save women from patriarchy, slavery and the tribal system. To save women, we should change the backward traditions and customs,> said Yasmîn Isa, indicating that Arab women are impressed by their activities. <When they see how we work with a communal spirit, they want to work with us. Now, Arab women are the members of all our committees. They tell us that they have improved themselves thanks to the philosophy of leader Apo (Abdullah Ocalan).>
'We will support all women'
Calling on women not to <keep silent, accept slavery,> Yasmin Isa said, <They should make great efforts to develop their society. They should defend their lands and country to the end. Open sewers in IDPs camps
Jinha - Womens News Agency - April 8, 2024
<<Open sewers in IDPs camps of Idlib pose a threat to displaced people <Open sewers pose a threat to thousands of displaced people,> said dermatologist Safaa Osman, pointing out that open sewers are the main causes of diseases.
Idlib- Open sewers in the internally displaced person (IDP) camps located in Idlib, a city occupied by the Turkish state in Syria, pose threat to thousands. Many children face the risk of falling into open sewers and the open sewers are the main causes of diseases, especially skin diseases.
41-year-old Laila Al-Anbi, a woman living in an IDPs camp in Idlib, thinks that open sewers pose a threat especially to children. <We are always afraid of our children falling into open sewers. Many children died after falling into open sewers. Although I have warned my children not to play around the sewers many times, they have fallen into the sewers several times,> said Laila Al-Anbi. <I could have lost my children if the people in the camp had not helped them. The open sewers also cause bad smells spreading throughout the camp. Living in tents is very difficult for us and now we suffer from open sewers.>
'There is an open sewer next to our tent'
38-year old Roaa Al-Haj Hussein lives in the Qah Camp for the displaced in northern Idlib. <There is an open sewer next to our tent. We suffer from sewer flies causing the spread of diseases. Due to the open sewers in the camp, my children suffer from many skin diseases such as scabies and leishmaniasis,> Roaa al-Haj Hussein told NuJINHA. <In summer, we will suffer more from open sewers. I call on all international organizations to the camp and see how open sewers pose a threat to our health.>
'They pose a threat to thousands'
In an interview with NuJINHA, Safaa Osman, a dermatologist at a clinic in Idlib, emphasized that most of the people suffering from skin diseases are displaced children living in unofficial camps in northern Idlib. <Open sewers in IDPs camps cause the spread of skin diseases such as lice, scabies, leishmaniasis and gastrointestinal diseases. The open sewers carry bacteria and viruses causing many diseases. Many camp residents do not have access to safe and clean toilets and have to use dirty water. This causes the spread of various diseases in the camps. The lack of clean water and open sewers pose a threat to thousands of people living in IDPs camps.> >>
