'Zelal Zagros led women from darkness to light'
Jinha - 25 Jan 2024 - SILVA AL-IBRAHIM
<<'Zelal Zagros led women from darkness to light'
Indicating that Zelal Zagros, who was assassinated in Kirkuk, led women
from darkness to light with her struggle, the women of North and East
Syria vow to follow in the footsteps of Zelal Zagros.
Manbij- Politician Feryal Sileman Xalid, also known as Zelal Zagros, was
shot dead in the street outside a school in Kirkuk, a city in southern
Kurdistan (Kurdish Region of Iraq) on 18 January, 2024. Born in Hasakah
Canton of North and East Syria in 1975, joined the Kurdish Freedom
Movement when she was 17. Zelal Zagros was a symbol of freedom for
Kurdish people, especially women. She struggled for the freedom of her
people for 31 years and took part in the Rojava revolution. In 2016, she
participated in the offensive against ISIS in Manbij and played a
leading role in uniting different groups in the city against ISIS. In
2018, she went to Deir-ez-Zor to fight ISIS. Then, she went to Damascus,
the capital of Syria, to strengthen women's organizations. For 31 years,
she carried out activities to raise awareness among women. She went to
Southern Kurdistan to make efforts for women; however, she was
assassinated in Kirkuk on January 18. On January 22, she was laid to
rest in Hasakah.
'She fought the oppression of women'
Zelal Zagros was also one of the founders of the office of the
Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) in Manbij.
<Reactionary regimes aim to intimidate people by assassinating political
women activists,> said Ghabsha Suleiman, member of the Tal Hawzan
Council in Manbij. <Zelal Zagros fought the oppression of women in
Manbij when the city was controlled by ISIS. She paved the way for women
to play their role in society. Martyr Zelal Zagros left an unforgettable
mark and impact on women of Manbij. We vow to follow in her footsteps
and to struggle for women's freedom.>
'Such practices cannot disrupt our determination to struggle'
<During a meeting to elect the co-spokesperson of a village commune, she
made a speech that impressed all participants,> said Fatima Salloum,
Co-chair of the Tal Hawzan Council, talking about the personality and
the struggle of Zelal Zagros. <When ISIS controlled our city, she taught
us how to fight to take back our rights. Thanks to her, I improved
myself and now I am the Co-chair of the council. She had a strong
personality. We vow to follow in her footsteps. Reactionary regimes
aimed to break the will of women by killing Zelal Zagros; however, such
practices cannot disrupt our determination to struggle.>
'The attacks will not weaken the strong will of women'
<Zelal Zagros was with us when Manbij was controlled by ISIS,> said
Halime Cuma, Co-chair of the Al Farat Council. <After Manbij was
liberated from ISIS, Zelal Zagros led us to rebuild our city. Her
struggle impressed people of all ages. She led women from darkness to
light. The attacks and assassinations will not weaken the strong will of
women. We will follow in the footsteps of Zelal Zagros.>
'She left traces on every woman's personality'
Mona Al-Hammadi, deputy chair of the Future Syria Party office in Deir
ez-Zor, talked about when Zelal Zagros was in Deir ez-Zor. <We worked
together everywhere. Zelal Zagros left traces on every woman's
personality. She had a strong and compassionate personality. I vow to
follow in her footsteps and build a democratic and free Syria.>
'She played an important role in organizing women'

Women of Raqqa
Jinha - 25 Jan 2024 - by SIBILYA EL-IBRAHIM
<<Women of Raqqa condemn death sentence given to Fatima Saleh al-Arwali
Women of Raqqa condemn the death sentence given to human rights defender
Fatima Saleh al-Arwali by the Houthis in Yemen and call on feminist
movements to stop the execution.
Raqqa- On December 5, 2023, the Specialized Criminal Prosecution in
Sanaa, controlled by the Houthis, sentenced to death Fatima Saleh al-Arwali,
a human rights defender and the former head of the Yemen office of the
Arab League's Union of Women Leaders. The women of Raqqa, a city in
northeastern Syria, condemn the death sentence and call on feminist
movements to unite in order to stop the execution. <We were subjected to
the most brutal torture and violations under the control of ISIS. Now,
Yemeni women are subjected to the same brutal torture and violations,>
said Buthaina Abdo, Spokesperson of the Zenubya Women's Community. <The
Houthis have committed many crimes against women in Yemen. Since they
took the control of Sanaa, 350 people have been sentenced to death amid
international silence.>
'We can see how the Turkish state and the Houthis have in common'
Recalling the death sentences given to two women and life imprisonment
given to eight women in Afrin by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed
factions, Buthaina Abdo said, <We can see how the Turkish state and the
Houthis have in common. They are different sides of the same shield
aiming to destroy freedoms and spread terror. They aim to spread fear
among people longing for freedom and democracy. They commit war crimes
that violate all international conventions.>
'We should unite'
Buthaina Abdo called on all women to support Fatima Saleh al-Arwali. <We
call on all women and feminist movements to unite in order to stop the
execution of Fatima Saleh al-Arwali. The international community and
human rights organizations must raise their voices to end the crimes
committed against women in occupied territories or elsewhere.>
'They try to break the will of women'
Kafya Kurdi, a member of the Zenubya Women's Community, condemned the
death sentence given to Fatima Saleh al-Arwali. <The Turkish state and
the Houthis carry out the same policies. Death sentences given to women
show this. They try to break the will of women. They especially want to
break the will of women, who reveal the truth and refuse injustice and
marginalization. Despite the crimes committed against women in North and
East Syria and Yemen, the international community remains silent. Their
silence means that they approve of the crimes.>
'We should be in solidarity'
Hasina Kamal, a member of the Zenubya Women's Community, thinks that the
death sentence given to Fatima Saleh al-Arwali is <a crime against
humanity and a shame for the whole world>. <All women's organizations
should unite and be in solidarity with each other to stop the execution,
raise the voice of truth and reveal the truths.>
Call on the international community
Fawza Al-Hamoud, member of the Zenubya Women's Community Education
Committee, also condemned the death sentence given to Fatima Saleh al-Arwali.
<The death penalty is a decision that contradicts international laws and
conventions. As women of North and East Syria, we declare that we stand
with Yemeni women and that we are in solidarity with them. We condemn
the crimes committed against them. We call on the international
community to stop the execution of the death penalty.> >>

Yazidi women write letters to Abdullah Ocalan
Jinha - 24 Jan 2024 - HEVI EZDA
<<Yazidi women write letters to Abdullah Öcalan
Yazidi women in Shengal write letters to Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan
as part of the campaign demanding the lift of the isolation imposed on
him and his physical freedom.
Shengal (Sinjar)- The Yazidi Free Women's Movement (Kurdish: Tevgera
Azadiya Jinen Ezidi-TAJE) has launched a letter-writing campaign as part
of the campaign launched by the Autonomous Administration Council in
Shengal demanding freedom for Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan. <When the
council launched the campaign, we started writing letters upon the
request of mothers. Then, we decided to launch a letter-writing campaign
so that all women across Shengal can write letters to leader Apo
(Abdullah Ocalan). For two months, the women of Shengal have written
letters to leader Apo,> said Riham Hico, coordinating member of the TAJE.
'We write letters with the hope that they will reach leader Apo'
Speaking about the campaign launched by the Autonomous Administration
Council in Shengal, Riham Hico said, <As TAJE, we launched a
letter-writing campaign to support the campaign. Previously, mothers and
children in Shengal wrote letters to leader Apo in order to express
their feelings. After the genocide, the Yazidi community got to know
leader Apo. The fighters of leader Apo rescued thousands of Yazidi women
during the genocide. However, the Yazidi women could not share their
feelings and thoughts with leader Apo due to the isolation imposed on
him. Now, they write letters to express their feelings and thoughts. We
write letters with the hope that they will reach leader Apo. We will
struggle to ensure his physical freedom.>
'The letters will be published'
Riham Hico told NuJINHA that they would continue to carry out activities
for the physical freedom of Abdullah Ocalan. <We will carry out many
activities to demand the physical freedom of leader Apo. We will visit
every house in villages and read the books of leader Apo because we want
everyone to learn the thoughts of leader Apo. We will hold a tent
protest and a workshop soon. Until now, many Yazidi women have written
letters to leader Apo. In the letters, women share their hopes and
thoughts. Some write poems in their letters. All women write that they
are determined to resist. Everyone knows very well that Yazidi women
were freed from the genocide thanks to leader Apo and that Yazidi women
defend their people today thanks to the ideology of leader Apo. The
written letter will be published later.> >>

Manizha Seddiqi
Jinha - 24 Jan 2024
<<Amnesty International demands immediate release of Manizha Seddiqi
Manizha Seddiqi must be released immediately and unconditionally, said
the letter released by Amnesty International on Monday.
News Center- Amnesty International released a letter on Monday,
expressing concerns about the ongoing detention and risk of torture of
Manizha Seddiqi, a women's human rights defender in Taliban prison.
Addressing Abdul Haq Wasiq, the head of the General Directorate of
Intelligence (GDI), the letter demanded the immediate and unconditional
release of Manizha Seddiqi. <Manizha Seddiqi, a member of the
Spontaneous Movement of Afghan Women, was forcibly disappeared on 9
October 2023 and found weeks later in the custody of the Taliban. She
was sent to Pule-Charkhi prison in Kabul on 5 December 2023. She has
been arbitrarily detained simply for exercising her rights to freedom of
expression and peaceful assembly,> the letter said. Amnesty
International's findings indicate that Manizha Seddiqi has been deprived
of family visits, lacks access to lawyers as well as access to medical
care and is in a deteriorating health condition. Expressing deeply
concerns, the letter said, <She is at risk of torture and other
ill-treatment, a concern amplified by Amnesty International's
documentation on people deprived of their liberty in Taliban's detention
centres and prisons.> The United Nations Assistance Mission in
Afghanistan (UNAMA) published a report on the human rights situation in
Afghanistan from January 2022 and July 2023. Half of the 1,600 human
rights violations in Taliban prisons involved torture or other cruel,
inhuman, and degrading treatment. Additionally, people are often
detained in undignified conditions and without access to the necessary
medical care, according to the report. <The arrest of Manizha Seddiqi
contravenes international human rights law, including the International
Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Afghanistan is a state
party. It is a clear violation of the rights to freedom of expression
and peaceful assembly,> said the letter calling on Abdul Haq Wasiq to
immediately and unconditionally release Manizha Seddiqi, pending her
release, ensure that her detention conditions meet international
standards, and that she is provided with access to lawyers and medical
care, and can receive family visits, immediately stop subjecting women
and their families to arbitrary arrest and detention, enforced
disappearance, and other grave human rights violations simply for
exercising their rights.>>

4 Yemeni women
Jinha - 24 Jan 2024 - by RANIA ABDULLAH
<<Yemeni women call for support South Africa's case against Israel
Yemeni women call everyone to support the case brought to the
International Court of Justice (ICJ) by South Africa about Israel's
attacks on Gaza.
Yemen- Thousands of Palestinians have been killed and injured in the
Israeli strikes on Gaza since October 7. In an interview with NuJINHA,
Yemeni women condemned the international silence against the crimes
committed against the people in Gaza by Israel.
'Genocidal attacks are carried out'
<More than three months have passed since the attacks on Gaza began,>
said Lara Walid, a student at the Faculty of Arts in the city of Taiz.
<Due to the international and regional failure and silence, genocidal
attacks are carried out in Gaza, civilians are killed, civilian
infrastructure are targeted and destroyed. We should support the case
brought to the International Court of Justice by South Africa so that
Israel can be held responsible for its crimes and violations against
civilians in Gaza.>
'The international and regional community remains silent'
<What is happening in Gaza is a heinous crime against humanity,> said
Sarah Al-Ariqi, member of the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate. <Israel
commits violations against civilians in Gaza in front of the
international community and humanitarian organizations. Due to the
international and regional failure, Israel carried out attacks targeting
men, women and children. The United Nations always claim that they
protect humanity, why do they remain neutral against what has been
happening in Gaza? The war on Gaza is a Zionist war in which Israel aims
to eliminate Muslims. Before Israel started its war on Gaza on October
7, it had committed many crimes against Palestinians. For decades, we
have witnessed brutal violations committed against Palestinians while
the international and regional community remains silent.>
'Israel should be held responsible'
Commenting on the case that was brought to the International Court of
Justice (ICJ) by South Africa, she said, <It is a positive step to break
the international silence against genocidal crimes committed by Israel
in Gaza. Israel should be held responsible for its crimes in Gaza. We
urge all countries to stand with South Africa.>
'We should unite'
<What has been happening in Gaza is a genocidal crime against
defenseless civilians,> said activist Noura Hujaira. <I am a mother and
I always fear that something will happen to children. I feel sorry for
the mothers in Gaza, especially those who have lost their children. The
international and regional community do not even try to take a step to
put an end to these brutal violations against innocent civilians. Since
October 7, the International Court of Justice has wasted time by
collecting evidence in order not to accuse Israel. I hope that all
countries support South Africa. We should unite to put an end to the
violations suffered by the Palestinian people.>
'Palestinians are subjected to persecution because they refuse to leave
their homes'
<The Palestinian issue is a humanitarian issue that must be supported,>
Sarah Al-Aghbari said, <Palestinians are subjected to persecution and
injustice because they refuse to leave their homes. Israel kills them
and commits the most heinous crimes against them. More than 100 days
have passed since Israel started a war on Gaza. 100 days may be a short
period for us but it is a long time for the people of Gaza. They suffer
from siege, lack of food, water medicine. Their living conditions are
deteriorating due to the failure and silence of the international
community.> >>
