<<The Week in Patriarchy
Israel-Gaza war
Opposing oppression is a feminist act - don't look away from Gaza
Watching what is happening in Gaza feels almost too painful to bear
sometimes, but it is important that none of us look away
Bearing witness is a feminist act
I want to state the following as clearly and unequivocally as possible:
Israel, with the help of the US, is deliberating starving the population
of Gaza to death. The (manmade) famine conditions unfolding in Gaza are,
many experts have noted, <unprecedented> in terms of their severity,
speed and scale. <We have never seen children pushed into malnutrition
so quickly in any conflict in modern history,> the UN special rapporteur
on the right to food, Michael Fakhri, has said. <We have never seen a
civilian population made to go so hungry so quickly and so completely
.... Israel is not just targeting civilians, it is trying to damn the
future of the Palestinian people by harming their children.> Not only is
Israel blocking aid from getting to Gaza, it is making the process of
getting what little aid does get in deadly. In a statement on Tuesday UN
experts accused Israel of <intentionally starving the Palestinian people
in Gaza since 8 October>, adding: <Now it is targeting civilians seeking
humanitarian aid and humanitarian convoys.> That statement was in
reference to what is being called the Flour Massacre. Last Thursday at
least 112 Palestinians were killed and 760 were injured in a desperate
attempt to get flour. Witnesses say Israel opened fire on the crowd and
caused panic, resulting in a stampede. This wasn't a one-off: there is
an established pattern of Israeli forces attacking Palestinians who are
trying to get aid. Again, I'm trying to state all this as clearly and
unequivocally as possible because the US government, and large swaths of
the US media, would have you believe the humanitarian catastrophe in
Gaza is inscrutable and unavoidable. There seems to be a widespread
attitude that while it's terribly sad innocent people are being bombed
to oblivion and starved to death, this is just the sort of inevitable
collateral damage that happens in a conflict. When Hillary Clinton was
recently asked if she was shocked by casualties in Gaza, for example,
she said: <Of course, I'm not shocked because that's what happens in
war.>
Let's be clear: collective punishment is not war. Starving people to
death is not war. Bulldozing cemeteries is not war. Firing on
humanitarian convoys is not war. All of those things are war crimes.
International law is very clear about this. (And, by the way, American
politicians are also very clear about this when the perpetrator of these
crimes isn't an ally.) And yet clarity has become another casualty in
this conflict. A lot of the US media has this curious habit of using
straightforward English when it comes to talking about most things, but
retreating into the verbal equivalent of interpretative dance when
describing violence perpetrated by Israel. Headlines are often so vague
they read like a murder mystery. See, for example, this headline from
the New York Times about the Flour Massacre: <Deaths of Gazans Desperate
for Food Prompt Fresh Calls for Cease-Fire.> One gets the impression
that these Palestinians just mysteriously flopped to the ground. Another
hallmark of US coverage of Israel-Palestine is to ensure the reader
knows, at every point, that even if an Israeli soldier fired a bullet, a
Palestinian was almost certainly to blame. See, for example, this
paragraph from an analysis of the Flour Massacre in the New York Times:
<More than 100 were killed and 700 injured, Gazan health officials said,
after thousands of hungry civilians rushed at a convoy of aid trucks,
leading to a stampede and prompting Israeli soldiers to fire at the
crowd.>
That framing is insidious: it casts the blame squarely on Palestinians.
They started it, the framing insinuates, Israel just retaliated in
self-defence. Those crazy Palestinians! They're always finding new ways
to massacre themselves! It is impossible to overstate just how dire the
situation in Gaza is right now. <Unless something changes, the world
faces the prospect of almost a quarter of Gaza's 2 million population -
close to half a million human beings - dying within a year,> Devi
Sridhar, chair of global public health at the University of Edinburgh,
wrote back in December. It's March now, and nothing has changed; things
have only got worse. The US continues to send extraordinary amounts of
weapons to Israel, using legal loopholes to keep these arms sales under
the radar. The US continues to attach no conditions to the military aid
it gives Israel. It continues to shut down any criticism of Israel,
including a UN resolution that would have condemned Israel for the Flour
Massacre. It continues to enable plausible genocide and ethnic
cleansing. In the face of a catastrophic famine, all the US has done is
airdrop a pitiful amount of food and made half-baked plans to build a
floating port. Performative doesn't even cover it. Writers haven't been
(completely) replaced with AI yet. We are human beings, not robots; we
feel things. I will be frank: it is almost unbearably painful, as
someone of Palestinian heritage, to write about what's happening in
Gaza. Not just because it involves reading about unspeakable horrors,
but because it seems like everything I write about Gaza boils down to a
plea for people to view Palestinians as humans. Do you know how debasing
that is? Do you know what it feels like to have to beg people to see you
as someone deserving of dignity and freedom? I know that Im not alone
when I say that the last five months have permanently altered how I see
the world. They have hollowed me out. Of course, writing about what's
happening is a luxury compared with living it. The pain I feel is
nothing compared with Rania Abu Anza, who spent 10 years trying to get
pregnant then lost her five-month old twins and husband in an Israeli
airstrike. It's nothing compared with the 700,000 women and girls in
Gaza who are trying to manage their menstrual cycles in camps where
there is only one toilet for 486 people. It's nothing to the nightmare
that 2 million people in Gaza are living every day. Watching what is
happening in Gaza feels almost too painful to bear sometimes, but it is
important that none of us look away. Im writing this on International
Women's Day (IWD) and I want to stress that bearing witness is a
fundamentally feminist act. Opposing oppression everywhere is a feminist
act. If you want to honour the original radical and anti-war spirit of
IWD, please do not look away from Gaza. Raise your voice and make sure
nobody in the future can ever say: 'I didn't know.'>>

<<Over 13,000 Palestinian children killed since Oct.7
13,750 Palestinian children have been killed in Israel's attacks on Gaza
since October 7, 2023, said the UNRWA situation report on the situation
in the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
News Center- The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine
Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) published a report on the situation in
the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem on Wednesday.
13,750 Palestinian children have been killed in Israel's attacks on Gaza
since October 7, 2023, the report said. According to OCHA, 434
Palestinians, including at least 106 children, were killed in the West
Bank, including East Jerusalem, between October 7 2023 and March 21
2024. <Despite the adoption of the resolution, Israeli Security Forces (ISF)
continued military operations across Gaza, particularly in the Al Rimal
area near Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza city, central Khan Younis, and the
vicinity of Al Amal and Nasser hospitals also in Khan Younis,> the
report said. <This has resulted in further civilian casualties,
displacement, and destruction of houses and other civilian
infrastructure. Airstrikes and bombardment continued in Rafah, where
UNRWA estimates a total of 1.2 million people are now living, the vast
majority in formal and informal shelters.> According to the Ministry of
Health in Gaza as of 25 March, at least 32,333 Palestinians have been
killed in the Gaza Strip since October 7. About 70 per cent of those
killed are reported to be women and children. Another 74,694
Palestinians have been reportedly injured. According to the Gaza Health
Cluster, hospitals in the north Gaza and Gaza face challenges due to
recent military operations, and are in dire need of fuel, medical
supplies and medical staff. Hospitals are operating with limited
resources, facing electricity shortages and witnessing an increase in
trauma cases and malnutrition. This highlights the urgent need for
continued support and assistance from all clusters/sectors. Israeli
authorities had informed the UN that they will no longer approve any
UNRWA food convoys to northern Gaza. Since 22 March, five UNRWA food
convoy requests to access the north have been denied by Israeli
authorities, UNRWA Commissioner-General, Philippe Lazzarini said on
March 24.>>

Displaced children
Jinha - Womens News Agency 28 Mar 2024 - by ŞERIN MIHEMED
<<Displaced women: Our resistance in camps continues
Women, who have been displaced from Afrin and Serekaniye (Ras al-Ayn) by
the Turkish state, say that they endure difficult living conditions in
IDPs camps in the hope of returning to their homeland one day.
Qamishlo- Newroz camp, a formal internally displaced person (IDP) camp
located in the countryside of Derik, hosts thousands of people, forcibly
displaced from Afrin and Serêkanîyê (Ras al-Ayn). Despite the difficult
living conditions in the camp, women resist to return to their homeland.
Adoul Hassan, a displaced woman from Afrin, lost her husband in Afrin 10
years ago. <I started living with my father after my husband died. I
have lived alone since my father died. Now, I endure all the difficult
living conditions in the camp alone.>
Their living conditions deteriorating every day
Adoul Hassan dreams of returning to Afrin one day. <Due to the ongoing
Turkish attacks, we face many problems such as power and water
shortages. We cannot even meet our basic needs,> said Adoul Hassan. <The
Turkish attacks have destroyed civilian infrastructure, including
hospitals, health centers, power and water stations, in the region. The
ongoing Turkish attacks have exacerbated our suffering. The living
conditions in the camp have been deteriorating every day due to the
Turkish attacks and the lack of support by the international
humanitarian organizations.>
'One day we will return'
Adoul Hassan told us that they had a happy life in Afrin before their
city was occupied by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions. <Our
life in Afin was good and we could easily meet our daily needs. We used
to earn a living from olives, fruits and vegetables. However, the
Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions cut down our olive trees,
plundered houses, agricultural lands and animals. One day we will return
to Afrin and we will resist until we return to our homeland.>
'We will keep resisting'
<Living conditions in the camp are very difficult. It is hot in summer
and cold in winter,> said Hadla Mustafa, a displaced woman from
Serekaniye. <Despite all the difficult living conditions, we keep
resisting so that we will return to our homeland. We all hope to
return.>
'Everyone dreams of returning'
Speaking about their lives in the camp, she said, <We have built a new
life in the camp. We improve ourselves thanks to the communes in the
camp. We will liberate our homeland and rebuild our lives there.
Although each displaced person has a different story, everyone dreams of
returning to Serekaniye and Afrin.> In her speech, Hadla Mustafa also
called on the international community not to <remain silent against the
crimes committed by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions in the
occupied areas. The international community should break its silence.>

<<Women of Kerboran: We will vote to demand peace and freedom
Women of Mardin's Kerboran (Dargeçit) district say they will vote in the
upcoming local elections to <demand peace and freedom. Municipalities
belong to the people and we demand municipalities provide services to
the people.>
Merdin- Political parties speed up their election campaigns for the
local elections that will be held in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan on
March 31, 2024. One of the districts where the People's Equality and
Democracy Party (DEM Party) speeds up its election campaigns is Mardin's
Kerboran (Dargeçit) district. The elected mayor of Dargeçit Municipality
was replaced by a state-appointed mayor in 2016. In 2019, the AKP won
the municipality by bringing police officers and soldiers from other
cities and registering them as voters in the district. The municipality
held by the AKP has sold the municipal properties, zoned agricultural
lands for construction without serving the people. The DEM Party has
speeded up its election campaign in the district to regain the
municipality. DEM Partys Co-mayoral candidate for the district is Asya
Gezer, sister of Garibe Gezer, who died under suspicious circumstances
in prison. The people of the district are determined to take back their
municipality from the AKP in the upcoming local elections. NuJINHA spoke
to women of Dargeçit about the upcoming local elections.
'Kerboran deserves better services'
<We will vote for ourselves, for our own existence and identity,> said
Kadriye Demir, pointing out that they received no services from the
municipality held by the AKP. <Kerboran deserves better services. We
will vote for ourselves (meaning the DEM Party). We will take what
belongs to us in the elections.>
'We will vote to demand peace'
Halime Demir told us that they would vote for the DEM Party defending
their language and identity. She also pointed to the isolation imposed
on Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan in Imrali prison and said, <We will
vote to lift the isolation.> <Our children are tortured in prisons. This
isolation and torture must end. Our young people go to European
countries to build a better future for themselves. We will vote in the
elections to end this war and isolation. We will vote for ourselves, the
DEM Party. Neither our votes nor our will are for sale. All we want is
peace and freedom. We have been demanding peace for years and we will
vote to demand peace again. We will take back our municipality.>
'We will do our best to regain our municipality'
Safiye Dogan told us that the Dargeçit Municipality held by the AKP has
not provided any services to them since 2019. <We will do our best to
regain our municipality. We will visit street by street to regain our
municipality. We are Kurds and all Kurds should vote for themselves. I
call on all Kurds not to sell themselves and their votes. Vote thinking
about your language, your villages and your past. Municipalities belong
to the people and we will take back our municipality on March 31.>
Munsime Aydın and Mecbure Kuçukkaya also told us that they would vote to
demand peace and freedom. <The municipality does not work for the
people. It used to build roads but it does not do that anymore. As the
people of Kerboran, we will take back our municipality with a majority
of votes.> >>

10 million children
Jinha - Womens News Agency 27 Mar 2024
<<Almost 10 million children remain in urgent need of humanitarian
assistance in Yemen
Nine years ago, a devastating conflict began in Yemen. Almost 10 million
children remain in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, warns UNICEF.
News Center- The Yemeni civil war began in late 2014 between the
internationally recognized Yemeni government forces and the Ansar Allah
Houthi group. While the reduction in active conflict since April 2022
has led to a decrease in civilian casualties and distress across
communities, the situation remains fragile without a sustainable
political settlement, especially critical at a time when more than half
of the population- 18.2 million people, including 9.8 million children
remain in need of lifesaving support. The fragility is most clearly
demonstrated by persistent malnutrition in the country, where more than
2.7 million children are acutely malnourished and 49 per cent of
children under the age of five suffer from stunting or chronic
malnutrition. This condition hinders children from growing to their full
potential with irreversible damage to long-term physical and cognitive
development, said UNICEF in a statement on Tuesday.
Devastating impact on the lives of the most vulnerable children in Yemen
<The vicious combination of years of protracted conflict, a shattered
economy, and a failed social support system have had a devastating
impact on the lives of the most vulnerable children in Yemen,> said
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. <Far too many children
continue to be deprived of basic necessities, including proper
nutrition, which could threaten generations to come unless urgent action
is taken to provide children with the preventive measures and treatment
they so desperately need.> Despite the truce-like conditions,
intermittent fighting and exchanges of fire continue in many parts of
the country with children being the victims of landmines and explosive
remnants of war. Since the start of the conflict in 2015, more than
11,500 children have been killed or injured as a result of the conflict,
including 3,900 children killed and 7,600 maimed, UNICEF said.
<UNICEF and partners will continue our life-saving work in Yemen to help
ensure that children who have suffered so much will have brighter days -
and futures - ahead,> said Catherine Russell. <To do this, we need
continued support, commitment and solidarity from our partners and the
international community.> >>

<<Pregnant women at risk in IDPs camps of Idlib due to lack of
healthcare services
Thousands of pregnant women living in IDPs camps of Idlib are at risk
due to the lack of healthcare services and medications.
Idlib- Thousands of pregnant women live in IDPs camps located in Idlib,
northern Syria. Although they have to have a prenatal visit every month,
they cannot because they have no access to healthcare services for many
reasons. Salam Al-Jadoua says that pregnant women in IDPs camps face
difficult living conditions and poverty and the lack of healthcare
services have doubled their suffering.
'I do not know how I will be transferred to hospital'
A six-month pregnant woman (22) in the Ma'arrat Misrin camp has been
experiencing an uncertain period and that uncertainty frightens her.
<Doctor told me that I should get enough nutrients during my pregnancy
to protect my baby and myself,> she told NuJINHA. <However, I cannot buy
vegetables and fruits due to their high prices. My baby will be born
unhealthy due to malnutrition. In addition, the closest health center is
far from the camp. I do not know how I will be transferred to hospital
when labor pain starts.>
She died after giving birth
The maternal mortality rate in IDPs camps is very high. Ola Al-Asaad
(26) was a displaced woman living in a IDPs camp of Idlib. She died
while giving birth. <Her labor pains started late in the evening. We had
to get help from a midwife living in a nearby village,> her mother,
Sanaa Al-Adl, said. <After giving birth, she lost too much blood so we
took her to the closest hospital, five miles away from us. She died
before we reached the hospital.> 33-year-old Hanan Al-Bakour died in the
seventh month of her pregnancy. <My daughter was pregnant with
preeclampsia. She suffered from high blood pressure and her kidneys and
liver did not work normally. Her health condition deteriorated due to
high blood pressure and she died in the seventh month of her pregnancy,>
said her mother, Ayoush Al-Bakour.
'Malnutrition causes maternal deaths'
<Pregnant women in IDPs camps suffer from hunger and malnutrition,> said
gynecologist Maram Alwan. <Malnutrition causes maternal deaths. The lack
of healthcare services and the decrease in the number of specialists
cause pregnant women not to have a prenatal visit every month. This
situation affects the health of displaced women in the camps and causes
pregnant women to go through the hardest months of their lives. Pregnant
women need to access healthcare services every month.> >>

<<Mauritanian women demand law combating gender-based violence
A draft law on gender-based violence has been rejected three times by
the Mauritanian parliament. Mauritanian women wait for the draft law to
be passed.
Mauritania- A draft law on gender-based violence has been rejected three
times by the Mauritanian parliament. NuJINHA spoke to Aminetou Mint El-Moctar,
human rights activist and founder of the Association of Women Heads of
Households (French: Association des Femmes Chefs de Familles, AFCD),
about the draft law rejected by the parliament. <Gender equality should
be achieved unconditionally all over the world,> said Aminetou Mint El-Moctar,
drawing attention to oppression faced by women in countries, where
women's movements are weak.
'Women are deprived of their rights'
Pointing to the low literacy rates among women in Mauritania, she said,
<This prevents women from participation in politics, the labor force,
and decision-making positions. Women are deprived of their rights
because they do not have a law protecting them from violence.> Article
56 of the Personal Status Law (PSL) states that a husband constitutes
the head of household while a wife's role is to assist him in managing
the family. A Mauritanian man may pass his nationality to his
non-Mauritanian wife upon marriage. However, the law does not
specifically provide for a Mauritanian woman to confer her nationality
to her foreign husband. The draft law contains many articles defining
and punishing rape and sexual harassment, creating special criminal
court chambers to hear sexual violence cases, and allowing
nongovernmental groups to bring cases on behalf of survivors.
Aminetou Mint El-Moctar spoke about the rejection of the draft law by
the parliament. <The draft law has been rejected three times by the
parliament since 2012. The draft law has sparked discussions among
extremist movements.>
'Women should unite'
She criticized the lack of unity among women's organizations and human
rights organizations in Mauritania. <The lack of unity negatively
affects women's struggle for rights. Women activists should unite for
womens rights.> >>
