Exclusive: Activist Hashemi Wants End To <Religious Government>
Faezeh Hashemi, the
daughter of late President Akbar Hasemi Rafsanjani, has called for a <fundamental>
transformation of the way Iran is ruled, saying that a <religious government is
no longer suitable for the country.>
<We have corrupted
religion,> the political activist said in an audio file recently sent to
IranWire. The audio was recorded on April 3 as Hashemi was about to return to
prison at the end of a leave of absence. <I believe that our foreign policy is
completely wrong....In our society, human rights have been completely forgotten
and this doesn’t conform to our own constitution in any way. I say that all
political prisoners must be released. Political prisoners and trial behind
closed doors in security courts have no place in our laws,> she said. Hashemi
was arrested on September 27, 2022, early after the start of nationwide
anti-government protests triggered by the death of a young woman in police
custody. She was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of “propaganda
against the regime” and <disturbing public order and peace by participating in
illegal gatherings.> Hashemi left Tehran's Evin Prison on a leave of absence on
March 27. In the audio file, she addressed a wide range of issues, including
whether referendums should be held, the state of the opposition, mandatory hijab
rules and the treatment of prisoners. Hashemi said that she considers herself as
a <ransformationist,> not a <reformist.> <I say I want transformation because I
believe a religious government does more damage to religion and that ideological
governments can cause more injustice. They can exploit people's beliefs more
easily and hide behind them,> she said.....According to Hashemi, the government
must fundamentally change its view on hijab: <Nowhere in Quran it is said that
you go to hell if you don't wear hijab or to paradise if you do. Quran promises
hell for other things like deceit, lying, sowing discord, injustice, murder and
violating people’s rights....Grafting hijab onto the regime's identity was wrong
to start with, and it's one of the issues that must be dealt with seriously.>
Hashemi expressed support for violators of the hijab laws, saying, <When the
government doesn’t want to act rationally, then people themselves must act.>
When asked if she would participate in such acts of civil disobedience, she
answered that she wouldn't. <I believe in hijab, but I support those who don’t
believe in it and don't like to wear hijab.> Hashemi said that referendums could
be a <good way> to address issues such as forced hijab or Iran's relations with
the United States, which she said, <pushed the Islamic Republic into an impasse,
created numerous problems and brought the government and the people against each
other.> <Our revolution happened four generations ago. Do we expect the fourth
and fifth generations after the revolution to think exactly like the
revolutionaries of the 1970s and 1980s? Definitely not,> she said, adding, <Aren’t
we a republic? We must see what our new generations want.> Hashemi also called
on those opposed to the Islamic Republic to put aside their <discords.> <Besides
intense repression, one of the reasons why protests are usually ineffective is
the discords among them, which give the government a trump card. If they want to
be effective, they must unite, and they shouldn't draw lines because somebody is
a Mojahed or a monarchist or a reformist and so on.> >>

<<Khamenei
and Hijab: Three Decades of FrictionsSupreme
Leader Ali Khamenei has declared that it is <legally and religiously forbidden
for women to remove their head coverings in public and expressed hope that the
hijab issue in Iran will be resolved with divine intervention.> Khamenei made
the comments on April 4, as a growing number of women have appeared in public
without hijab since a young woman, Mahsa Amini, died in police custody in
September 2022, sparking nationwide protests demanding fundamental economic,
social and political changes. Amini had been arrested for allegedly wearing
hijab improperly. The authorities have repeatedly warned women and girls to
respect the Islamic Republic’s dress codes and threatened to punish violators.
Many businesses have been shut down due to the failure of owners or managers to
observe hijab rules. Khamenei addressed the requirement for all women in Iran to
conceal their hair while in public on numerous occasions since the establishment
of the Islamic Republic 34 years ago. In the early years of his leadership,
which started in 1989, Khamenei insisted on how Iranian women had achieved great
success while wearing hijab. He has also criticized the compulsory unveiling of
women in some countries. During the 199's, he focused more on cultural, literary
and political issues, though he did warn about the threat of <cultural
invasion.> He did not regularly address the issue of <bad hijab> until his
supporters called for measures to better enforce the Islamic Republic dress
codes. In recent years, Khamenei attacked women activists protesting compulsory
hijab, dubbed <the Girls of Revolution Street,> and groups within the government
who claimed that wearing headscarves should become optional. Following Amini's
death, Khamenei asserted that the hijab issue was just a pretext for the
women--led protester movement to overthrow the government. In his latest
remarks, he declared that <the enemy's spy agencies> are actively seeking to
exploit the issue, which he said will 'undoubtedly' be resolved.>>
