<<Women in Northeast Iran Province Barred From Exercising in Parks
Authorities in the northeastern Iranian Khorasan Razavi, which has been
at the forefront of imposing restrictions on citizens' social lives, has
barred women from practicing sports in city parks. Alireza Tajfirouz,
the provincial Director-General for Sports, announced on February 6 that
women were now allowed to exercise in designated areas only. In recent
years officials in Khorasan Razavi have implemented their own laws and
regulations in the social and political spheres. ISNA news agency
reported in August last year that the authorities had started removing
outdoor seating areas from restaurants and cafes in the provincial
capital, Mashhad.>>

<<Iranian Comedian Zeinab Mousavi Summoned to Serve Prison Sentence
Well-known Iranian comedian Zeinab Mousavi, who has spoken against the
compulsory hijab in her comic videos, says she has been summoned to
serve a two-year prison sentence. Mousavi shared a photo of the summons
from the judiciary on her Instagram page on February 5, saying that she
had been instructed to hand herself over to the authorities within five
days. <I will be in prison on the anniversary of the Spring of Freedom,
and those of us born after that glorious era have not truly experienced
freedom,> she said. <We have been deprived of our rightful share of
everything.>
Between the fall of the shah in February 1979 and the end of that year,
the Iranian press enjoyed what is referred to as the Spring of Freedom,
characterized by dozens of new publications. Mousavi, 34, has over half
a million followers on Instagram, where she appears as the <Empress of
Kuzcoo> - a parody of an old villager who wears a hijab that reveals
only her nose. She is also a stand-up comedian who appeared on state TV.
Mousavi was arrested amid nationwide protests in October 2022, and was
released on bail the following month after spending 25 days in solitary
confinement. She was handed a two-year sentence on unknown charges in
December 2022.>>

<<Iranian Lawyers Go on Trial Over Online Posts
Three Iranian lawyers have been brought to trial on charges that
included <propaganda activities against the Islamic Republic,> the
Dadban legal group reported. It said that Seyed Mehdi Karimi, Seyed
Sadegh Mostafavi and Abuzar Nasrollahi appeared before a Revolutionary
Court in Tehran on February 4. Reza Shafakhah, another lawyer, said that
his colleagues were <tried just for posting stuff on their social media
pages.> Last month, two United Nations experts denounced the <enormous
obstacles and pressures> faced by Iranian lawyers who provided, or
attempted to provide, legal support to protesters. At least 66 lawyers
have been arrested and detained since nationwide protests erupted in
September 2022, <apparently in an attempt to both intimidate them and to
prevent them from representing protestors,> the experts said in a
statement. Eleven of these lawyers have been sentenced and 47 have been
released pending trial, they said, adding that many others were targeted
with intimidation, harassment and disbarment.>>

Iranian security forces have arrested civil activist and former
political prisoner Murteza Parvin-Joda in the northwestern city of
Ardabil. According to information received by IranWire, four security
vehicles arrived at the house of Parvin-Joda's father on the morning of
February 6 and detained the activist. During the raid, the security
agents reportedly searched the house and confiscated Parvin-Joda's
personal belongings, including his mobile phone and books. The reason
for the arrest, the security agency involved, and Parvin-Jodas'
whereabouts remain unknown. Parvin-Joda, a theater actor, had previously
been detained and sentenced to imprisonment and whipping on multiple
occasions.>>

The Kurdistan Human Rights Network has announced that an indictment has
been prepared against Verishe Moradi, a member of the East Kurdistan
Free Women's Society (KJAR), on charges of <acting against national
security>.
News Center- Verishe Moradi, a women's rights defender and member of the
East Kurdistan Free Women Society (KJAR) was arrested and taken to an
unknown location by the members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps
(IRGC) in Sanandaj on August 1, 2023. After 70 days, her family learned
that she was held in a detention center in Sanandaj and had been
subjected to torture. She was then transferred to Evin prison in Tehran.
The Kurdistan Human Rights Network announced on Sunday that an
indictment was prepared against Verishe Moradi on charges of <acting
against national security> after more than six months. <Several weeks
ago, an indictment was prepared against political prisoner Verishe

held in Cologne
The European Kurdish Women's Movement (TJK-E) calls for the
participation in the march to be held in Germany's Cologne city on
February 17 to demand the physical freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah
Ocalan.
News Center- The European Kurdish Women's Movement (TJK-E) has released
a written statement about the march to be held in Germany's Cologne city
on February 17, demanding the physical freedom of Kurdish leader
Abdullah Ocalan. Recalling that the 25th anniversary of the
international conspiracy against Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan is
approaching, the statement said, <We strongly condemn the states
involved in this conspiracy, especially the Turkish state, which is the
enemy of humanity and women. We are determined to hold the planners,
implementers and supporters of the February 15 conspiracy accountable.
The 15th February is a dark day for us. We vow to turn 2024 into the
year of freedom for leader Apo (Abdullah Ocalan).> Mentioning the
<Freedom for Abdullah Ocalan, solution to the Kurdish question>
campaign, the statement said, <Activities and events have been held in
four parts of Kurdistan and other countries. Kurdish people, especially
women and young people, and Kurdish friends have held marches,
conferences, protests and hunger strikes. Kurdish women have led all
protests saying, 'The freedom of leader Apo is our freedom'. The 25th
anniversary of the international conspiracy against our leader is
approaching. As part of the 'Freedom for Abdullah Ocalan, solution to
the Kurdish question' campaign, a march will be held in Cologne on
February 17, 2024.> The statement called on everyone, demanding freedom
and equal life and defending human rights, and all women of Kurdistan to

<<Jailed Iranian Filmmaker Nourizad Handed New Prison Term
Iranian authorities have sentenced Mohammad Nourizad, a 66-year-old
dissident filmmaker, screenwriter and journalist, to an additional 61
months in prison. Since 2019, Nourizad has been serving a 15-year prison
term for allegedly insulting Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali
Khamenei. He stated that the main reason for the latest sentence was his
<refusal to remain silent in the face of violations.> Upon discovering
that approximately 90 billion tomans ($1.7 million) had been withdrawn
from prisoners' bank accounts across Iran, <everyone else chose to
remain silent, but I protested and took action,> he explained. Nourizad
is among 14 signatories of a 2019 statement calling for Khamenei's
resignation, the abolition of the Islamic Republic and the establishment
of a secular government.>>

Iranwire - 5 Feb 2024 - SINA GHANBARPOUR
<<Iranian Journalist Faces Terrorism Accusations over Instagram Post
Iran's judicial and security institutions have justified recent
restrictions on journalists by claiming they were <supporting
terrorists,> sparking criticism from legal professionals and social
media users. The term <supporting terrorists> became a topic of
discussion after Islamic Republic supporters called for legal action
against a journalist over a post on Instagram. The journalist in
question, Shahrzad Hemmati, the social desk editor of Shargh newspaper,
had written messages against the use of the death penalty. According to
Ghasem Boedi, a lawyer and jurist, <holding an opinion is not a criminal
act> and <showing sympathy toward any individual cannot be deemed
criminal,> he says. Under Article 23 of the Islamic Republic's
constitution, no one should be attacked for having an opinion, Boedi
says. <We don't have the legal accusation of supporting terrorists, and
what is criminalized pertains to terrorism financing, which is unrelated
to this issue.> Moussa Barzin Khalifehlou, a lawyer and human rights
activist, agrees with Boadi, saying Hemmati had only expressed an
opinion and exercised her freedom of speech. <The law specifies
financial and logistical support for terrorism. The term 'terrorist
supporter' is not criminalized and is absent in the law,> Barzin says.
<Every citizen, whether a reporter or an ordinary individual, can have
opinions about judicial decisions and voice them. This can be done as
long as it is in the context of unjust proceedings against a person,
which is neither a crime nor forbidden.> Barzin cites one circumstance
where a comment may bear legal consequences: <If a person makes false
assumptions in their comment, such as claiming the judge was influenced
when it's not true, they must be able to prove it. If not, there's a
possibility of filing a complaint, which didn't happen in the recent
case.> Kambiz Norouzi, a lawyer and advocate for press and media rights,
wrote on his Telegram channel: <This concise statement by Ms. Hemmati is
solely a reaction to the execution itself and does not involve those who
were subject to execution.> <In Iran, as in other societies, many people
believe that the death penalty is incompatible with humanitarian
principles.> Ali Mojtahedzadeh, another lawyer, expressed his views on
the social media platform X: <There is an inviolable principle in
criminal laws known as the narrow interpretation of criminal laws.>
<According to this principle, the journalist from Shargh newspaper
cannot be charged for 'writing about four executed people,' even if they
were members of a separatist party and accused of being terrorists. The
bizarre accusations against her are unfounded.> >>

<<Iran's Soccer Legend Daei Faces Retribution for Criticizing Islamic
Republic
In a recent interview, Iranian football legend Ali Daei said he had been
prohibited from engaging in any business activities in the country for
the past year and a half. Daei, a former German Bundesliga striker whose
109 goals at international level were long unsurpassed until Cristiano
Ronaldo overtook him, has been a vocal supporter of the 2022-23
nationwide demonstrations and has repeatedly criticized the authorities
for suppressing the protest movement. In 2019, Daei revealed that the
then-CEO of Saipa FC, <Mustafa Modaber,> was in reality Ghafoor Darjazi,
a general of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) linked to
controversial incidents. His stance against the government's policies
has apparently led to the current ban on his business activists. This
isn't the first instance of the Iranian government using economic
restrictions as a tool to silence dissent.
In 2017, 152 BBC Persian journalists were banned from engaging in
business activities and from traveling in the country.>>

Daya Sharifa
NCRI - Womens committee - Feb 2024 - in Women's News
<<Daya Sharifa, a justice seeking and bereaved mother, is placed under
house arrest
Daya Sharifa, the justice seeking mother of Ramin Hossein Panahi, was
arrested by security forces in Kamyaran, a city south of Sanandaj, the
capital of the Iranian Kurdistan Province. Daya Sharifa, also known by
her real name Sheraft Zarrini, is over 70 years old. She is a fervent
opponent of the death penalty in Iran and is renowned for being among
the mothers seeking justice in the wake of their sons' executions. Ramin
Hossein Panahi, 23, was arrested in June 2017. He was viciously tortured
in the detention centers of the IRGC Intelligence and the Ministry of
Intelligence. He was executed after a grossly unfair trial on September
8, 2018, along with Zanyar and Loqman Moradi, while on hunger strike.
His body was shown to his mother two days later. Daya Sharifa was on her
way to Kamyaran for the second time along with her daughter and
son-in-law to meet the mother of Pejman Fatehi, one of the four Kurdish
political prisoners recently executed. They were arrested on Thursday
night, February 1, 2024, by three carloads of agents from the Ministry
of Intelligence and transferred to the Department of Intelligence in
Sanandaj. The intelligence forces of Sanandaj issued a threat to Daya
Sharifa, informing her verbally that she was not allowed to leave her
place of residence. They emphasized that, under no circumstances, should
she depart from Qoruchai, the village in Dehgolan, Kurdistan, where she
resides; otherwise, she would face arrest and imprisonment. One of the
intelligence agents insulted Daya Sharifa, saying, <Old woman, you don't
want to die, what do you want?> She bravely replied, <I died a long time
ago. The body in front of you is not me; it carries Ramin's soul. Go
ahead and hang me once more.> In recent days, she had already been
detained twice for a few hours, preventing her from being with the
families of the young men who were executed. Pejman Fatehi, a
28-year-old married man with a young child, was executed on January 29,
2024, along with three other young men in the same case. They faced
charges of espionage and were executed in Qezal Hesar prison in Karaj.>>

<<Execution of Inmate in Qazvin Central Prison
The death sentence of Hassan Mehraban, a 46-year-old inmate from Qazvin
previously condemned for premeditated murder, was carried out in Qazvin
Central Prison on the morning of Saturday, February 3rd, 2024. The
Hengaw Organization for Human Rights received a report confirming the
execution of Hassan Mehraban, who had been detained on charges of
premeditatedly murdering his ex-wife. The judicial system of the Islamic
Republic of Iran had sentenced him to death. It's crucial to note that,
as of the time of this report, there has been no official announcement
regarding the execution of Hassan Mehraban in government-sanctioned
media outlets, particularly those aligned with the judiciary. The lack
of official disclosure raises questions about transparency and
accountability in the implementation of capital punishment within the
country. The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights will continue to
monitor developments related to this case.>>

Opinion by G. d'A.: It's also crucial to note that any form of violence
against women is unacceptable! I've been there, saw it happen as a
baby/toddler/child/teenager and the hurt inflicted is in one word
undescribable. Did Mehrhaban get what he deserved? That's an open
question. But, the demand to protect women is loud and clear and the
answer should be: yes and now.

<<Mother of Slain Activist Receives Six-Year Detention Sentence
Bahareh Shiri, a resident of Semirom (Isfahan province) and the mother
of the late Ali Abbasi, a participant in the Woman, Life, Freedom (Jin,
Jiyan, Azadi) movement, has been sentenced to six years of detention by
the judicial system of the Islamic Republic of Iran. According to
information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights,
Bahareh Shiri, one of the plaintiff mothers in Semirom, recently
received a five-year penal detention sentence for <inciting the people
to disrupt public security> and an additional year for <propaganda
against the government> charges from the first branch of the Semirom
Court. Applying the law of consolidation of sentences, the full
five-year penal detention term is enforceable for Bahareh Shiri.
Notably, half of the imposed verdict has been suspended. Disturbingly,
Bahareh Shiri was denied the fundamental right to legal representation
throughout all stages of her trial. Ali Abbasi, a 24-year-old athlete,
lost his life to direct gunshots from Islamic Republic of Iran forces in
Semirom city during the Woman, Life, Freedom movement on November 16,
2022, shortly after completing his compulsory military service. The
sentencing of his mother raises concerns about the treatment of families
seeking justice for their loved ones and highlights the need for
scrutiny on human rights issues in the region.>>

<<Iranian Authorities Urged to Lift Travel Ban on Film Directors
The Berlin International Film Festival has called on the Iranian
authorities to allow two Iranian writers and directors from traveling to
the German capital later this month to present their new film at the
74th edition of the festival. Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha's
film My Favourite Cake is to premiere in the Berlinale competition. The
festival will run from February 15 to 25. The two have been banned from
traveling, have had their passports confiscated, and face a court trial
on charges of <propaganda against the system and actions against
national security.> The Berlinale <is shocked and dismayed to learn that
Moghaddam and Sanaeeha could be prevented from travelling to the
festival to present their film and meet their audience in Berlin,> it
said in a statement on February 1. Moghaddam and Sanaeeha have gained
international acclaim particularly for their film Ballad Of A White Cow,
which was presented in competition at the 2021 Berlinale and emerged as
an audience favorite in public voting that year.>>

G.d'A.: Noteworthy: I admire the Iranian independent cinema very
much and have about 100+ as we call it 'socially engaged' movies and
really all gems but unfortunately I could not find 'My favourite cake'
but I very much recommend the following movie which has a similar
subject/impact:
