Mehran Akrami, Freedom-fighter for the Women, Life, Freedom
movement
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 15 March 2024
<<Woman, Life, Freedom: Kurdish Athlete Mehran Akrami Dies Under Torture
During Women, Life, Freedom Movement
Mehran Akrami, a Kurdish athlete from Takab city who was apprehended by
security agencies in Saqqez city during the Women, Life, Freedom
movement, has tragically passed away due to torture inflicted by the
intelligence forces of the city. With a notable background in taekwondo,
Akrami held several provincial and national medals. His demise adds to
the toll of 12 Kurdish individuals who lost their lives under similar
circumstances during the aforementioned movement. According to a report
received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights on Tuesday, March
13, 2024, 32-year-old Mehran Akrami, arrested during the November 2022
protests in Saqqez city, suffered fatal torture at the hands of the
city's intelligence forces. Akrami had been detained in the Saqqez
Intelligence Department's detention center since his arrest. A source
close to the Akrami family revealed that on Thursday, March 14, the
Saqqez Intelligence Department informed them of their son's demise and
directed them to claim the body. However, upon reaching the Saqqez
Central Prison, they were redirected to the <Khomeini> hospital. The
family discovered that Mehran's body had been taken for autopsy upon
visiting Khomeini Hospital. The delivery of the body was contingent on
Mehran's father signing a document agreeing to a year-long autopsy
procedure. Hengaw has received information that last week Mehran Akrami
was transferred to Khomeini Hospital after enduring severe beatings,
resulting in kidney failure, while in the Intelligence Department
Detention Center. Akrami's family stated that during their visit on
Tuesday, they found two security agents stationed in his room, and both
of his hands and one of his legs were tied to the bed. Despite receiving
dialysis treatment at Khomeini Hospital, he was abruptly returned to the
detention center of the intelligence department under the advice of his
physician. Tragically, he succumbed to torture merely three hours later.
Sources close to the family who viewed Mehran Akrami's body noted severe
head injuries, including a fracture at the back of his head, as well as
bleeding from his nose, ears, and mouth. Mehran Akrami's funeral took
place in Takab City on Thursday amid heightened security measures. He
had been in custody in the detention center of the intelligence
department since his arrest on November 12, 2022, during the Women,
Life, Freedom movement, despite multiple attempts by his family to
secure his temporary release on bail. Notably, Mehran Akrami's arrest
stemmed from his political activism, and his brother and cousin were
also detained during the same movement. Family members lamented that
even after Mehran's passing, security agencies refused to return his
personal belongings. Mehran Akrami's death marks the twelfth instance of
a Kurdish individual dying under torture after being arrested during the
Women, Life, Freedom movement, according to the data registered at the
Statistics and Documents Center of the Hengaw Organization for Human
Rights. Previous victims include Ismail Dezwar, Mohammad Abdullahi,
Ramin Fatehi, Saman Qadirpour, Omid Hosseini, Hemn Aman, Shadman Ahmadi,
Shahriar Adeli, Mohammad Haji Rasulpour, Shirzad Ahmadinejad, and
16-year-old Barzin Hamzezadeh.>>

<<Iran Used AI to Monitor Protesters, Says Head of UN
Fact-Finding Mission
Sara Hossain, the head of the United Nations' independent
fact-finding mission on Iran's 2022 protests, said the Islamic
Republic's authorities had utilized artificial intelligence (AI) to
monitor protesters on social media platforms as she presented her report
during a session of the UN Human Rights Council Monday in Geneva.
Highlighting that <comprehensive investigations into human rights
violations following the 2022 protests have been undertaken,> she
disclosed that the mission has amassed 27,000 documents and interviewed
134 witnesses and victims within and outside Iran. Hossain further
revealed that the mission scrutinized expert opinions and official
documents released by the Iranian government. She asserted that the UN
fact-finding mission's discoveries, informed by the treatment of women
and supported by medical records, conclusively demonstrate that Mahsa
Amini was unlawfully killed, holding the government accountable for her
death. Moreover, she affirmed that the Islamic Republic utilized AI to
monitor protesters on social media platforms. Addressing the protests
following Mahsa's death, Hossain said that government forces violently
suppressed largely peaceful demonstrations. The mission's head also
disclosed that security forces employed military-grade weaponry,
including Kalashnikovs, large-caliber shotguns, and paintballs, to quell
the protests. Additionally, Hossain confirmed that at least 551
individuals, including 49 women and 68 children, were killed by
government agents across 26 provinces of Iran during the nationwide
protests of 2022. According to her, the highest death toll in a single
day, reaching 103 individuals, was recorded on September 30, 2022,
during protests following Friday prayers in Zahedan city. She emphasized
that not only are women who reject the government-mandated dress code
targeted, but their families also face government pressure. The
mission's report, released on March 8, said that Iranian authorities
resorted to <unnecessary and disproportionate use of lethal force> to
quell protests erupting after Mahsa Amini's death. Mahsa Amini died in
custody in 2022 after the morality police arrested her for wearing the
hijab <improperly.> <The mission has .... established that many of the
serious human rights violations .... amount to crimes against humanity -
specifically those of murder, imprisonment, torture, rape and other
forms of sexual violence, persecution, enforced disappearance and other
inhumane acts,> the report said. It also said Iranian security forces
were found to have sexually assaulted detainees during the months-long
uprising. <The security forces played on social and cultural stigma
connected to sexual and gender-based violence to spread fear and
humiliate and punish women, men and children,> the report noted.>>

<<Iran Rights Coalition Urges UNHRC to Extend Mandates Amid
Abuses
A coalition of Iranian and international human rights
organizations have issued a joint statement urging member states of the
United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to extend the mandates of
the fact-finding committee mission and the special rapporteur on Iran.
The statement emphasizes the critical role these two bodies play in
holding Iran accountable for human rights abuses. <The continuation of
these missions is both distinct and complementary,> the statement reads.
<Extending their mandates is vital for the Council to fulfill its duty
of protecting and improving human rights in Iran.> The signatories
express deep concern about the ongoing and serious human rights
violations documented in Iran. They highlight the fact-finding mission's
discoveries, which point to <systematic violations of human rights
against civilians, particularly women and girls.>
This call to action comes as the UNHRC prepares for its session
on March 18 regarding Iran.
The mission's report, released on March 8, said that Iranian
authorities resorted to <unnecessary and disproportionate use of lethal

<<Iran Sentences Journalist to Over 6 Years in Prison
The Islamic Republic's authorities have sentenced journalist Ali
Moslehi to six years and two months in prison, his lawyer said.
According to lawyer Saeed Gholamian, the Kashan Revolutionary Court
sentenced Moslehi to 15 months and one day in prison for <insulting the
leadership> and to seven months and one day for <propaganda against the
Islamic Republic.> In a post on social media platform X, formerly
Twitter, the journalist's lawyer further stated that the Kashan Criminal
Court handed down a sentence of three years and one month for <insulting
sanctity> and one year and three months for <spreading lies.> Under the
Islamic Penal Codes, the most severe punishment, a jail term of three
years and one month, will be enforced. Ali Moslehi was arrested at his
residence in Kashan on July 20, 2023. After 70 days in detention, he was
temporarily released pending the court convening and the verdict being
issued. Moslehi was a political columnist for a local news website
called KashanNews. In a report published in September 2023, the
International Federation of Journalists noted that in the aftermath of
the Women, Life, Freedom protests in Iran, <suppression of the media and
arrest of journalists and the pressure on media workers has increased
significantly.> It also listed six journalists who were <unfairly> held
in prison at the time, and among them was Ali Moslehi.>>

<<'Start of Our Legal Battle': Iran Protest Detainee Testifies at
UN
Keyvan Samadi, 25, one of the detainees of the nationwide
protests of 2022, endured various forms of physical, sexual, and mental
torture during his 21-day confinement in a clandestine detention center.
He said he suffered humiliation, verbal abuse, and repeated beatings.
Presently, Samadi is attending the Human Rights Council meeting at the
United Nations headquarters to testify as an eyewitness to the Islamic
Republic's actions against the protesters. The summary of the
fact-finding committee's report was released on March 8. Today, on March
18, a meeting to delve into the specifics of this report will convene
with representatives from various countries, including Iran, in
attendance. <The report from the UN fact-finding committee marks the
beginning of our legal battle,> Samadi told IranWire. Samadi was
arrested on September 29, 2022. Reflecting on his ordeal, he recounted
to IranWire, <A few days after reports surfaced that my city was
controlled by protesters, security agencies conducted mass arrests of
demonstrators, and I found myself among those detained.> Samadi
disclosed that he endured 21 days of detention in a clandestine
facility, locating its exact whereabouts only after his release: <This
center is situated behind a girls' school named Hekmat, near the police
station and governor's office.> In that facility, Samadi suffered a
range of physical, sexual, and mental abuses. <They subjected me to
relentless torture, from beatings with kicks and batons to electric
shocks and burning my flesh,> he said. Before founding the Khorshid
Sorkh environmentalist group, Samadi had registered other civic
associations in his city focused on animal welfare and environmental
protection. He said, <My arrest stemmed from authorities' recognition of
my organizational capabilities, but they sought to coerce a false
confession of orchestrating armed activities. However, I had never
resorted to violence, even during my military service.> Following his
release, Samadi fled to Iraq before seeking refuge in France and later
Germany, where he presently lives with his brother. However, he faces
complications under the Dublin Regulation due to France being his
initial safe haven, thus jeopardizing his stay in Germany. Despite these
challenges, Samadi asserted, <I knew the risks when I embarked on this
journey.> Samadi emphasized, <The recent report from the fact-finding
mission marks the start of our legal battle. Its designation of the
Islamic Republic's actions as crimes against humanity validates our
year-long outcry. Our testimonies have borne fruit, empowering us with
institutional backing capable of enacting change.> He expressed pride in
the testimonies, believing these could significantly challenge the
Islamic Republic. <The atrocities inflicted upon us will no longer be
concealed. Our claims, once dismissed, now stand verified, paving the
path for justice,> he asserted. Testifying at today's Human Rights
Council meeting in Geneva, Samadi declared, <Those of us who have spoken
out no longer fear the Islamic Republic. We have shed our timidity. I
see my liberation as an opportunity to amplify the voices of those still
incarcerated or silenced by fear.> >>

<<Iranian Professor Detained After Protests to Testify at UNHRC,
Hopes for Justice
Behnaz Amani, a poet, writer, and assistant professor at Tehran
University, endured 46 days of detention in Qarchak prison following the
nationwide protests in 2022. Reflecting on her experience, she hopes the
recent report from the UN fact-finding mission will compel the Islamic
Republic to be held accountable. Amani's ordeal began on October 20,
2023, when security forces apprehended her after endorsing a statement
by university professors condemning the arrest of students. Currently in
Geneva, she is a witness to the actions of Iranian agents against
protesters, prepared to testify before the United Nations Human Rights
Council on Monday. Upon learning of the UN report's confirmation of the
Islamic Republic's crimes against humanity, Amani felt a <profound
resonance,> a testament to the shared suffering endured by her and her
comrades. <It served as a poignant reminder of the collective tears shed
alongside families and friends,> she said. Published on March 8, the
fact-finding mission's report summary sets the stage for a critical
meeting on March 18, where representatives from various nations,
including Iran, will convene to scrutinize its details. Drawing from its
investigations, the committee decries the Iranian security forces' use
of arbitrary coercive measures, resulting in the illegal killing and
injuring of protesters. Amani hopes this report will catalyze a stride
toward justice, not just for Iran but all those who yearn for justice
worldwide. Recalling her arrest at her residence, Amani recounts her
swift transfer from Shapour Detention Center in Tehran to Evin Prison
and finally to Qarchak. She describes the interrogation she faced at the
university's security department, highlighting the coercion and
intimidation tactics employed.
While in prison, a group of American poets condemned her arrest.
<We are a group of American poets who write in solidarity with
Behnaz Amani and support her right to peacefully protest the brutal and
extrajudicial persecution of her students and many others in Iran,> they
wrote in a letter. <We make this plea: Do not send Behnaz Amani back to
prison, under any circumstances. Anyone who takes part in incarcerating
her again will be held responsible for what happens to her and for any
consequent deterioration in her medical condition,> they added. Standing
by her endorsement of the professors' statement, Amani asserts that
<students have no place in prison> and condemns the <brutal treatment
and clandestine detentions they endured.> In an interview with IranWire,
she reveals being threatened with execution at Evin Prison for her
support of student gatherings. Amani further said, <This is sheer
cruelty. We were all dismissed and forced into silence. The Islamic
Republic has reduced us to disposable beings, and it is agonizing, yet
few truly understand our plight. Once released from prison,
communication becomes fraught; some fear us, while others fail to grasp
the depth of our suffering.> The UN fact-finding mission's report
reveals egregious violations of international human rights laws by the
government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The report, released on
March 8, also said that authorities resorted to <unnecessary and
disproportionate use of lethal force> to quell protests erupting after
Mahsa Amini died in custody in 2022. <The mission has .... established
that many of the serious human rights violations .... amount to crimes
against humanity - specifically those of murder, imprisonment, torture,
rape and other forms of sexual violence, persecution, enforced
disappearance and other inhumane acts,> the report said. It also said
Iranian security forces were found to have sexually assaulted detainees
during the months-long uprising.
<The security forces played on social and cultural stigma
connected to sexual and gender-based violence to spread fear and
humiliate and punish women, men and children,> the report said.
Expressing regret over the Iranian authorities' lack of substantive
cooperation despite repeated requests for information, the committee
noted the absence of data on fatalities and injuries among security
forces. From the start, the Islamic Republic denounced Germany's
proposal for an independent fact-finding mission in the Human Rights
Council, labeling its mission as <political and illegitimate.> However,
Amani said, <Contrary to some beliefs, reports like these exert pressure
on the Islamic Republic. I welcome the establishment of this committee
and the ensuing pressure on the government, hoping it will have a
response.> >>

<<Iranian Rapper Toomaj Salehi Faces Trial, Dismisses Allegations
Imprisoned Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi, 33, went on trial on
March 16 for charges including <encouraging acts of violence> online and
<spreading lies,> his lawyer says. Amir Raisian, Salehi's lawyer, said
the trial took place in Branch 117 of the Criminal Court of Isfahan
province. Salehi <appeared in the trail via video conference.> According
to Raisian, the rapper refuted the accusations during the trial and
provided explanations to the court in his defense. Salehi's page on X,
managed by his relatives outside Iran, emphasized that if the court is
<independent,> the only just verdict would be Salehi's <acquittal and
release.> They wrote, <There was no legal and justified citation,> and
the trial concluded with Salehi defending his positions. Salehi was
initially arrested in October 2022 after making public statements in
support of the nationwide Women, Life, Freedom protests that had erupted
the previous month. He released songs criticizing the government and
supporting the protests demanding more freedoms and women's rights. He
also posted pictures and videos of himself during the demonstrations. In
July 2023, a court sentenced the artist to six years and three months in
prison for <corruption on Earth.> He was released on bail on November 18
after the Supreme Court, responding to an appeal, found <flaws in the
original sentence.> It returned the case to a lower court for a
reexamination and possible retrial. Salehi was returned to jail less
than two weeks later to face new charges after publicly talking about
his alleged torture in prison in a video.>>

<<'Red Warning' for Flooding in Iran Ahead of Persian New Year
Iran's Meteorological Organization has issued a <red warning> for
flooding in five western provinces as a new wave of heavy rains
approaches just ahead of the Persian New Year. The National Center for
Forecasting and Crisis Management reports that rain will begin on
Monday, March 18, initially affecting West Azerbaijan, East Azerbaijan,
Ardabil, Gilan, Zanjan, Kurdistan, and Kermanshah. It will then move on
to Ilam, Khuzestan, Lorestan, and Hamadan. Officials warn of potential
flooding in the country's western half, particularly on Tuesday, which
coincides with a peak in travel in Iran as it is a day before the
Persian New Year. A <certain> risk of flooding looms over western and
southern regions on Tuesday and Wednesday. The red warning specifically
applies to Khuzestan, Ilam, Lorestan, Chaharmahal Bakhtiari, Kohgiluyeh,
and Boyer Ahmad provinces due to the intensity of the expected rainfall.
The Research Institute of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences predicts
heavy rain throughout the country until next week.
Environmental activists have also expressed concerns about the
potential disaster that the rains would cause. However, Iran's water
crisis is not over despite recent snowfall and rainfall. The National
Forecasting Center reports that overall rainfall for the year is 28
percent below the long-term average.>>

on September 13, 2022 by Iran's morality police for wearing an
"ill-fitting" headscarf that did not fully cover her hair, Amini died
three days later in hospital, provoking a wave of anger and protests
across the country. A new generation of women is now daring to defy the
mandatory Islamic veil law imposed by the mullahs. Who are these young
women ready to break the law, and how do they differ from their elders?
Our reporters Catalina Gomez Angel and Pouya Parsa Magham went to meet
the Iranian women determined to fight for their freedom despite threats
and intimidation.>>
