JINAs CALL FOR REVOLUTION
Iranwire - 27 Feb 2024
<<Iranian Student Groups Call for Islamic Republic's <Overthrow>
A coalition of Iranian student organizations and activists has announced
that they will boycott the upcoming parliamentary elections, saying they
want fundamental changes in the country. In a statement on February 26,
they declared that they would only vote for <the overthrow of the
Islamic Republic and the victory of the Woman, Life, Freedom revolution.>
<We have spoken on the streets and stated firmly that we aim to
dismantle the Islamic Republic that restricts freedom,> the statement
reads, adding that <boycotting the elections is not enough for us.> The
activists said that the Islamic Republic is struggling for <its own
survival> while Iranians strive for its demise, as the government has
created <inhumane conditions for millions.> The signatories hail from
universities across the country, including in Tehran, Ahvaz, Isfahan and
Ardabil. Elections for the parliament are scheduled for March 1 along
with voting to fill the Assembly of Experts, with hundreds of would-be
candidates disqualified by the hardline Guardian Council. Voter turnout
in the 2020 parliamentary elections was at its lowest since the 1979
Islamic Revolution at just over 42 percent. Earlier this week, nearly
300 political, social and cultural figures in the country publicly
denounced the <staged> upcoming elections and called for Iranians not to
participate in the vote. In a joint statement, the signatories condemned
the <deadlock of reforms,> the <complete elimination of critics,> and
the <widespread disqualification of candidates.> >>

<<Bad Weather in Iran Leaves Thousands Trapped on Motorways
Nearly 16,000 people were left stranded on motorways across 26 Iranian
provinces, as severe weather conditions left parts of the country's
transport infrastructure paralyzed. Heavy snowfall and rain forced the
closure of roads in provinces such as Sistan and Baluchistan, Khorasan
and Yazd, which usually experience little precipitation. The head of
Yazd province's traffic police confirmed that all village roads are
blocked due to heavy snowfall.
The Iranian Meteorological Organization issued a warning for continued
cold, rain, winds and flooding in various parts of the country.
Additionally, Fars News Agency reported the cancellation of flights at
Kerman airport due to <thick fog.> Harsh weather conditions previously
led to the cancellation of flights across the country. On February 29,
schools in several provinces were again closed for online classes.
Meanwhile, the national gas company warned of <record-breaking> levels
of consumption due to the cold weather and urged citizens to conserve
energy.>>

Iranian authorities have sent prominent LGBTQ rights activist Elham
Choubdar back to prison to serve a three-year sentence, according to a
group that tracks human rights violations in Iran. According to Hengaw,
Choubdar was arrested <in late February> and transferred to the women's
ward of Urmia Central Prison, in the country’s northwest. Choubdar, 26,
was sentenced to death last year for <propagating homosexuality,>
<promoting Christianity> and <collaborating with opposition parties.>
However, the Supreme Court of Iran overturned the sentence, and the
activist was temporarily released on bail. Choubdar was later sentenced

A 20-year-old individual identified as Sarina Jahani, residing in
Shahriar (Tehran province), who was arrested concurrently with the
commemoration of Jina Amini and sentenced to 27 months of detention, has
been transported to Evin prison. According to a report received by the
Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on February 5th, 2024, Sarina
Jahani from Shahriar was arrested and relocated to Evin prison in Tehran
to serve her 27-month detention sentence. Reported by a family member of
Sarina Jahani, she was sentenced to 21 months of detention for the
charge of <coalition and consensus against national security> and an

<<Dozens of Iranians Arrested for Calling for Election Boycott Online
In the lead-up to Iran's parliamentary polls on March 1, authorities
have intensified their crackdown on supporters of an election boycott.
On February 28, the police commander of West Azerbaijan province
announced the arrest of 50 <social media page operators> accused of
<disrupting public order and inciting non-participation in the
elections.> The police official warned that publishing <tension-inducing
content> online would be considered a crime. A young woman was also
arrested in Tehran for publicly opposing participating in the elections.
The woman reportedly removed her headscarf and shouted slogans against
the vote. On March 1, voters are due to pick new members of the 290-seat
legislature from among 15,200 approved candidates. That's more than
double the number of candidates allowed to stand in the previous
parliamentary elections, when voter turnout was at its lowest since the

<<Call for boycotting Iranian parliamentary elections
“How can we forget everything and vote to legitimize this totalitarian
regime that kills women and children?” asked a human right defender from
Kermanshah, calling for boycotting the parliamentary elections to be
held in Iran on March 1.
Kermanshah- Iran is going to hold parliamentary elections this Friday.
61 million 173, 298 voters across the country are expected to cast their
votes. Days before the elections, many people have been calling for
boycotting the elections, condemning the system of the oppressive
Iranian regime.
A human rights defender from Kermanshah sent a message to NuJINHA,
calling for boycotting the elections.
“As women of Kermanshah, we follow in footsteps of Minoo Majidi (a
protester, who was shot and killed in Kermanshah by Iranian forces on 20
September 2022) and we boycott the regime’s elections to show that our
struggle and resistance still continue and that the Jin, Jiyan, Azadi
revolutionary movement is still active. In Kermanshah, the blood of
Minoo Majidi, young people and women is wet on the streets. How can we
forget everything and vote to legitimize the totalitarian regime that
kills women and children? A regime that has lost its legitimacy for
years but can only survive by suppressing protests, arresting and
executing people. As women, we have no hope for this corrupt parliament.
We demand a democratic country that will make life possible for us. As
the oppressed people in Iran, we will continue our struggle by chanting
the ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadi’ slogan. Women of Kermanshah will keep
resisting.> >>

Elham Choubdar, a prominent LGBTQ+ community activist in Urmia, has been

which was later overturned by the judicial system of the Islamic

<<Cold Weather in Iran Brings Gas Shortages, School Closures
Iran is facing record-breaking gas consumption, as a new cold wave
sweeps across the country. Snow, rain and freezing temperatures have
forced school closures in several provinces. While officials cite the
cold weather as the reason for the closures, media outlets suggest they
are due to gas shortages impacting heating systems. On February 28,
schools in Markazi, South Khorasan, Hamedan, and parts of Qazvin, Gilan,
Alborz, Tehran and Ardabil provinces were again closed for online
classes. <The cold weather and rain are expected to persist for the next
two days,> said Hossein Zafari, spokesperson for the country's crisis
management organization. Images from Tehran and Rasht show snowfall
exceeding 50 centimeters in some areas. Iran's National Gas Company said
gas consumption exceeded 670 million cubic meters per day, a level
described as <unprecedented> by Oil Minister Javad Owji. Authorities
reiterated calls for the public to conserve gas, while the Iran Gas
Company urged households to maintain indoor temperatures between 18 and
21 degrees Celsius and turn off heating in unoccupied rooms. Meanwhile,
gas supply issues at power plants led to outages in some provinces like
Gilan. Authorities in several cities in Mazandaran have declared a state
of emergency and warned citizens of potential gas cut-offs. Despite Iran
boasting the world's second-largest gas reserves after Russia,
insufficient investment, sanctions, mismanagement and outdated
technology contribute to gas supply disruptions in winter. As a result,
many power plants and industries switch to fuel oil during the cold
season.>>

An Iranian inmate has taken his own life in a prison near Tehran, a

said that he had been incarcerated in Ghezelhesar prison, according to
the HRANA human rights news agency. Approximately seven months ago,
Jalali began serving a 25-year sentence on drug-related charges. At
least 32 inmates died in the Islamic Republic's prisons last year. Nine
of them were political prisoners, according to the Hengaw human rights
news agency. Some of the deaths were caused by delayed medical treatment
or denial of healthcare, fighting between inmates, suicides and
suspected poisonings.>>

<<Political prisoner Narges Mansouri sentenced to additional 3 years in
prison
Political prisoner Narges Mansouri has been sentenced to three years of
prison on charges leveled against her during her detention. This is the
sixth case filed against Ms. Mansouri. Narges Mansouri, 46, and the
mother of a 12-year-old, is a member of the Syndicate of the workers of
Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company. Branch 26 of Tehran's Revolutionary
Court sentenced her to five years in prison on the charge of <assembly
and collusion against national security> and to one year in prison on
the charge of <propaganda against the state> in November 2019. Ms.
Mansouri was initially arrested in mid-April 2022 to serve her time in
prison but was released on a 3-billion-Toman bail in May. Finally, she
was arrested on December 1, 2023, in Khoy and transferred to Evin
Prison. She started a hunger strike on December 25, 2023. In protest of
pressures imposed on her family, she has refrained from taking food and
medicine. She held a sit-in outside the sentry's office in the women's
ward of Evin on December 30, protesting the verdict issued to confiscate
her mother's only house, which had been set as Ms. Mansouri's bail. The
authorities did not show any reaction to Ms. Mansouri's hunger strike,
and finally confiscated her mother's house. The latest is that the 28th
Branch of Tehran's Revolutionary Court handed down an additional
three-year prison sentence for her in the absence of her lawyer on
charges of <propaganda against the state.> Her lawyer, Mohammad Moghimi,
announced that she has been threatened to death twice by the acting
officer Hadi Mohammadi.>>

<<Floods in Southeast Iran Cut Off Roads, Cause Damage
Heavy rainfall in Iran's impoverished province of Sistan and Baluchestan
has caused the Kajoo river to overflow its bank, cutting off access to
dozens of villages. <Rains have caused significant damage to homes,
agricultural land and roads in Qasr-e Qand district,> district governor
Ahmadreza Hashemzehi said. <The road connecting 33 central villages on
the riverbank remains cut off,> Hashemzehi added. Lack of government
assistance has compounded the woes of the flood victims, who urgently
require aid, the Haalvsh news agency quoted local sources as saying. In
recent days, heavy snowfall, rain, blizzards and frost have also caused
widespread disruptions across several Iranian provinces. In some areas,
schools and offices were forced to close due to a critical gas shortage.
Authorities in Tehran, Gilan, Alborz, South Khorasan, Razavi Khorasan,
North Khorasan, Mazandaran, Golestan, Ardabil, West Azerbaijan and East
