Hungerstrikes against the death-penalty
NCRI - Womens committee -15 Feb 2024 - in Women's News
<<Hunger Strikes Against the Death Penalty in the Women's Ward of Evin
Prison
A cohort of female political prisoners, supporting the opposition
People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), went on a hunger
strike on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, within the confines of the women's
ward in Evin Prison. Their objective was to denounce the escalating
frequency of executions in Iran. The hunger strikes against the death
penalty, aimed at condemning the imposition of the death penalty, was
first launched on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, by death-row inmates at
Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj, following the executions of detained
protesters Mohammad Qobadlou and Farhad Salimi.
This was the third round of hunger strikes against the death penalty
initiated by political prisoners across several prisons, including Evin,
Qezel Hesar, Mashhad, Karaj, Khorramabad, and Saqqez. The campaign
vehemently denounces the executions and demands an immediate cessation
of such actions. On Tuesday, January 30, several death-row prisoners in
Qezel Hesar made an announcement: <In order to amplify our voices, we
will commence a hunger strike every Tuesday. We have chosen Tuesdays
because this day often marks the final moments for our fellow inmates,
who are usually transferred to solitary confinement a few days prior.>
The ongoing resistance of political prisoners against the clerical
regime's killing machine persists amidst a concerning escalation in the
issuance of death sentences. Recent weeks have seen a surge in charges
leveled against political prisoners, including accusations of <moharebeh>
or waging war on God and <Bagh-ye> or armed insurgency against the
clerical regime.
So far, four female political prisoners in the women's ward of Evin
Prison have been charged with <Bagh-ye.> They include Marzieh Farsi,
Forough Taghipour, Nassim Gholami Fard, and Varisha Moradi. In late
January, the 26th Branch of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran convened a
trial to address the charges against Marzieh Farsi and Forough Taghipour.
However, the two political prisoners declined to attend the court,
citing their refusal to acknowledge its legitimacy.>>

<<Another Lawyer Arrested in Iran; Reason Unknown
Iranian security forces arrested lawyer Mohammad-Reza Kargarpisheh
Moghadam on February 14, the activist HRANA news agency reported. The
arrest reportedly occurred on a street in Karaj, near Tehran, while
Kargarpisheh was on his way to his office. He was subsequently
transferred to a detention facility in the city. The reason for the
lawyer's arrest has yet to be disclosed, according to a source close to
the Kargarpisheh family. Last month, two United Nations experts
denounced the <enormous obstacles and pressures> faced by Iranian
lawyers who provided, or attempted to provide, legal support to
protesters. At least 66 lawyers have been arrested and detained since
nationwide protests erupted in September 2022, <apparently in an attempt
to both intimidate them and to prevent them from representing
protestors,> the experts said in a statement. Eleven of these lawyers
have been sentenced and 47 have been released pending trial, they said,
adding that many others were targeted with intimidation, harassment and
disbarment.>>

Punishment
In a recent legal development, Fatemeh Sheikhi, a 22-year-old Kurdish
activist from Abdanan in the province of Ilam, has been sentenced to one
year in prison by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic. According to
reports received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on
Tuesday, February 13th, 2024, Fatemeh Sheikhi was convicted by Branch
101 of the Criminal Court of Abdanan, presided over by Chief Judge
Mohammad Gholami, on charges of <insulting sanctities> and was
subsequently sentenced to one year behind bars. It has come to light

revolutionary prosecutor's office in Abdanan in October 2023 following
the sharing of several stories on her Instagram account. After
undergoing interrogation and temporary detention, she was released on
bail pending the completion of legal proceedings.
Documents obtained by Hengaw reveal that the one-year imprisonment
sentence against Fatemeh Sheikhi has been suspended for a period of two
years. In response to this verdict, Fatemeh Sheikhi has stated that she

<<Father of Slain Iranian Protester Handed Another Prison Term
The Iranian authorities have sentenced Manouchehr Bakhtiari, the father
of a 27-year-old man killed in a crackdown on protests in Iran in 2019,
to six more months in prison for <insulting the leadership.> The

Court of Appeal of Qazvin, led by Judge Habibullah Amiri, had upheld the
sentence. Bakhtiari is currently imprisoned in Qazvin prison. He was
previously sentenced to a total of 18 years in prison and 74 lashes on
charges including <gathering and colluding to commit a crime against
security,><spreading lies,> <propaganda activity against the Islamic
Republic and disturbing public peace,> and <collaboration with groups

shot on November 19, 2019, on the second day of widespread protests
triggered by a government's sudden decision to raise gas prices.

<<Iranian Writer Rashno to Serve Nearly Four-Year Prison Sentence
Sepideh Rashno, an Iranian writer, poet and vocal critic of compulsory
hijab, says she will go to prison to serve a three-year-and-11-month
term handed to her for <publishing obscene images> on social media.
Rashno said on her Instagram account that she was also barred from
traveling.
<A travel ban for someone who doesn't intend to leave,> Rashno wrote.
Rashno was arrested in July 2022 after she was filmed arguing with a
woman on a bus over the mandatory headscarf. Two weeks later, state TV
aired a program showing her giving a forced confession while signs of
beatings were visible even on her face. In June last year, she announced
that she was released on bail after being summoned again by the
authorities, but was <banned from leaving Tehran.> Previously, she had
reported that Al-Zahra University had banned her from studying for two
semesters due to the <non-observance of Islamic clothing.> All women in
Iran must conceal their hair with a hijab while in public and wear loose
fitting trousers under their coats. Iranian women who refuse to wear a
head covering have been arrested and prosecuted amid a wave of protests
sparked by the September 2022 death of Mahsa Amini while in police
custody after being detained by police for allegedly wearing her
headscarf improperly.>>

<<Raheleh Rahemipour, Elderly Political Prisoner, Denied Much Needed
Medical Treatment
February 14, 2024in Women's News
Political prisoner Raheleh Rahemipour, detained in the women's ward of
Evin prison, is deprived of proper medical care. She suffers from many
illnesses and is detained despite the forensic doctor confirming that
she cannot tolerate imprisonment. The 72-year-old political prisoner is
in prison for demanding answers on the forced disappearance of her
brother and niece who were detained during the 1980s. Her brother
Hossein Rahemipour, a dentist, was arrested along with his pregnant wife
in 1983. His daughter Golrou was born in Evin Prison. When she was 15
days old, Golrou was separated from her mother for supposed medical care
and was not returned to her. In April 1984, the authorities informed the
Rahemipour family that Golrou had passed away, without showing them her
death certificate or grave. In September 1984, they informed the family
by phone that Hossein Rahemipour was executed during the mass executions
of political prisoners. But the regime never specified his place of
burial. The UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances
has confirmed that Golrou Rahemipour and her father have been forcefully
disappeared and has demanded accountability from the Iranian regime. In
late January, Mrs. Rahemipour was taken to the hospital due to her poor
health. She was returned to prison two days later after undergoing a
cardiac angiogram. She was taken to the prison clinic several times but
did not receive any serious treatment.
Raheleh Rahemipour was initially arrested by security forces in Tehran
on November 12, 2019, and was transferred to the Islamic Revolutionary
Guard Corps Intelligence Detention Center known as Section 2A in Evin
Prison. She was released after some time. The elderly political prisoner
was sentenced to six years in prison and was detained in mid-November
2023, to serve her sentence in Evin Prison. She has been charged with
<spreading propaganda against the states> and <assembly and collusion
against national security>.>>

<<Teenage Daughter of Iranian Dissidents Missing for Two Weeks
Two teenage girls in Iran - Aida Moradbehrouzi and Hasti Mohammad
Hosseinion - have been unaccounted for since January 31. Aida, 14, is
the daughter of Sori Babaei, an activist who was imprisoned last year
for her involvement in an anti-mandatory hijab campaign, and
Mohammedreza Moradbehrouzi, a former political prisoner. Sori Babaei was
granted temporary leave on February 13 after the disappearance of her
daughter and her classmate aged 13, a source close to the family told
IranWire. According to this source, the police recently informed Aida's
father that they were unable to locate the two teenagers. They left home
around noon on January 31 and have not returned since. CCTVs captured
them at Qazvin city's main bus terminal. The pair live in the
impoverished Mehregan neighborhood, located 25 kilometers from Qazvin.
IranWire's source suggested that an unidentified individual may have
influenced the schoolgirls via the Rubika messenger to run away from
home. <The messages sent to the girls encouraged them to flee and
advised them against carrying bank cards, birth certificates, mobile
phones or any identification documents with them,> the source said.
Rubika is an Iranian messaging platform developed by the Tosca company,
a subsidiary of the Execution of Imam Khomeini's Order Headquarters.
Rubika operates under the umbrella of government institutions in Iran.
The family has urged judicial authorities and the police to investigate
the messages exchanged by the two teenage girls on Rubika messenger. The
police have stated that they don't have access to internal messaging
platforms. There is speculation that Islamic Republic authorities might
use the teenagers to put pressure on Sori Babaei. The <Women's
Revolution> social media account said, <The prosecutor and judiciary
head of Qazvin Province, told Sori Babaei, 'Due to your daughter's
disappearance, if you wear a headscarf, express forgiveness and repent,
we will release you and help find your daughter.'> >>

<<Jailed Iranian Protest Rapper Salehi Sentenced to Prison in New Case
The appeals court of Isfahan province has rejected Iranian rapper Toomaj
Salehi’s appeal against his one-year prison sentence, his lawyer says.
<Our appeal against the initial one-year imprisonment verdict was
dismissed by Branch 17 of the Isfahan court, making the sentence final,>
lawyer Amir Raisian told the semi-official ILNA news agency. <We will
continue to explore other avenues for appeal,> he added. Salehi, 33, was
initially arrested in October 2022 after making public statements in
support of nationwide protests that had erupted the previous month. He
had released songs that criticized the government and supported the
protests demanding more freedoms and women's rights, and posted pictures
and videos of himself during demonstrations. In July 2023, a court
sentenced the artist to six years and three months in prison for
<corruption on Earth.> He was released on bail on November 18 after the
Supreme Court, responding to an appeal, found <flaws in the original
sentence.> It sent the case back to a lower court for a reexamination
and possible retrial. Salehi was returned to jail less than two weeks
later to face new charges after publicly talking about his alleged
torture in prison in a video.>>
