protection of Nobel Prize winner and gynecologist Denis Mukwege in
Congo. Years of protection by a UN peacekeeping mission of the
internationally acclaimed and famous activist, who helps many thousands
of raped and mutilated women, came to an end in March.
PvdA Member of the House of Representatives Lilianne Ploumen yesterday
asked parliamentary questions to Minister Stef Blok of Foreign Affairs.
She notes that the doctor and his hospital are no longer protected since
March by soldiers of the UN Stabilization Mission in the Democratic
Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) and the mission is unable to restore
protection due to budget cuts. She also asks whether Blok is willing to
urge the UN that this happens after all.
Before the judge
Today Tineke Ceelen, director of the Refugee Foundation, said on Radio 1
that the situation for 65-year-old Mukwege is 'life-threatening'.
According to Ceelen, Mukwege has again become the target of intimidation
and threats on TV, social media and by telephone after he expressed his
disgust at the raid on the village of Kipupu and urged the people who
have led crimes in Congo for the to bring justice. Ceelen drew attention
to his situation in De Volkskrant on Wednesday. 'Since 2012, Denis and
Madeleine Mukwege have lived on the Panzi hospital grounds, protected
until last March by soldiers from the peace mission Monusco, behind high
fences and coils of barbed wire. Even after his mother passed away,
Mukwege was only able to attend her funeral under heavy military
protection. Corona caused the departure of Monusco's soldiers from the
hospital compound. Due to budget cuts, Monusco sees no possibility of
restoring the protection of Panzi and the doctor," said the director in
De Volkskrant. 'If Congo loses its brave doctor, it loses its last
hope', Ceelen concluded her speech in the newspaper.>>
