<<Consumer can reject rape as a weapon of war and say no to conflict
mobile.
Congolese gynecologist Denis Mukwege's cry of despair about the rape
virus in his country must be followed seriously. Rape as a weapon of
war. Congolese gynecologist Denis Mukwege has been fighting this
horrific form of oppression for more than 20 years. In 2018 he received
the Nobel Peace Prize for his work, now he is once again drawing
attention to the 'rape virus' in his country with his book The Power of
Women, which was published last week.
At his clinic in eastern Congo, Mukwege and his team have already
treated more than 70,000 women and girls – probably the tip of the
iceberg. He helps victims with reparative surgeries when their vaginas
have been destroyed, helps them accept their babies as a result of rape,
and process the trauma. It seems a hopeless battle, he said in an
interview with the Volkskrant on Saturday. After 25 years of civil war
and impunity, nothing has improved. Kukwege's cry for help deserves
support and cries out for action. For too long companies and consumers
have turned a blind eye to the abuses that take place at the end of
production chains, mostly in poor countries, 'far-from-our-bed-show'.
The violence in Congo revolves around access to the country's unique
minerals, including cobalt and coltan, which are indispensable for the
production of our smartphones and batteries for electric cars or
windmills. The rape violence is part of a strategy to perpetuate the
lawlessness in the country with which armed militias, paid for by
interested politicians and businessmen, try to gain access to those
mineral resources. Attempts to stop the violence with a UN force have
been unsuccessful. Only when customers – companies and consumers –
completely distance themselves from this shadowy and horrific war on raw
materials will things change. That is why much stricter legislation is
needed that forces companies to account for the origin of raw materials.
To prevent conflict minerals from being 'laundered' through neighboring
countries, brokers or shady financial constructions, production chains
must become completely transparent. Companies naturally have an interest
in maintaining the fog and will do everything they can to combat
stricter – for them costly and business-disruptive – legislation and
regulations. It is therefore up to the consumer to force companies to be
transparent and accountable.
