Freedom movement has bolstered women's awareness,
courage, and bravery, it has also resulted in
significant oppression and increased pressure on women

"The Islamic Republic deserves
national sanctions and global condemnation. Boycotting

Iranwire - 8 March 2024
<<UN Report Blames Islamic Republic for Mahsa Amini's Death
The Islamic Republic is responsible for the <physical violence> leading
to Mahsa Amini's death in September 2022 and committed crimes against
humanity during the suppression of protests, a United Nations
fact-finding mission has said in a report. The UN panel <has established
the existence of evidence of trauma to Ms Amini's body, inflicted while
in the custody of the morality police,> the report said. <Based on the
evidence and patterns of violence by the morality police in the
enforcement of the mandatory hijab on women, the mission is satisfied
that Ms Amini was subjected to physical violence that led to her death,>
it added. Aged 22, Amini died on September 16, 2022, after being
arrested by the Morality Police for allegedly violating Iran's mandatory
headscarf law. The report, released on March 8, also said that
authorities resorted to <unnecessary and disproportionate use of lethal
force> to quell protests erupting after Amini's death. <The mission has
... established that many of the serious human rights violations ...
amount to crimes against humanity - specifically those of murder,
imprisonment, torture, rape and other forms of sexual violence,
persecution, enforced disappearance and other inhumane acts,> the report
said. It also said Iranian security forces were found to have sexually
assaulted detainees during the months-long uprising. <The security
forces played on social and cultural stigma connected to sexual and
gender-based violence to spread fear and humiliate and punish women, men
and children,> the report said. The UN report found that Iranian
security forces used shotguns, assault rifles, and submachine guns
against demonstrators <in situations where there was no imminent threat
of death or serious injury> to them, <thereby committing unlawful and
extrajudicial killings.> It also found a pattern of protesters being
shot intentionally in the eye. IranWire has reported that hundreds of
Iranians have sustained severe eye injuries after being hit by pellets,
tear gas canisters, paintball bullets, or other projectiles used by
security forces amid a brutal crackdown on largely peaceful
demonstrations. Doctors estimate at least 580 protesters have lost one
or both eyes in Tehran and Kurdistan alone. The actual numbers across
the country are much higher. <The mission notes the deterrent and
chilling effect of such injuries, as they permanently marked the
victims, essentially 'branding' them as protesters,> the UN report said.
Amini's death sparked the Woman, Life, Freedom movement in Iran and led
to months of nationwide protests. More than 500 people were killed in
the ensuing crackdown by security forces, and over 20,000 people,
including dozens of lawyers, were unlawfully detained. Following biased
trials, the judiciary handed down rigid sentences, including the death
penalty, to protesters. The Islamic Republic has so far executed at
least nine young protesters.>>

<<Over 325 Women Detained in 2023 Amid Iran's Hijab Law Enforcement
Authorities of the Islamic Republic detained at least 325 women in 2023
amid an escalated enforcement of mandatory hijab laws. The Hengaw Human
Rights Organization, in a March 8 report, detailed the professions of
several arrested women. According to it, the detainees include 18
students, 17 journalists and media activists, ten artists and actors,
and seven teachers. The women were arrested on charges including
<propaganda against the Islamic Republic,> <assembly and collusion,>
<corruption on Earth,> and <espionage.> The charges often lead to harsh
sentences, with some women facing life imprisonment or several years
behind bars. Hengaw further reported that at least 147 women activists
were tried by the Iranian judicial system in 2023. Their sentences
included imprisonment, flogging, and, in one case, the death penalty. A
total of 139 activists received prison sentences amounting to a
cumulative 553 years and 10 months. Additionally, ten women were
sentenced to a total of 557 lashes alongside imprisonment.>>

Narges Mohammadi
Iranwire - 8 March 2024
<<Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi Urges Action Against "Gender
Apartheid" in Iran
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, currently imprisoned in
Tehran's Evin prison, has called on the international community to unite
in "criminalizing gender apartheid.> She criticized the Islamic
Republic's <malicious, deceptive, and misleading" use of religious
principles to exacerbate gender inequality. Mohammadi, who won the Nobel
Peace Prize in 2023, highlighted the systematic oppression faced by
women in Iran and Afghanistan under both the Taliban and the Islamic
Republic. "Failure to criminalize gender apartheid not only amplifies
discrimination and oppression against women but also fortifies the
authority of religious and authoritarian regimes," she said in a message
from Evin prison on March 7. "As much as the Woman, Life, Freedom
movement has bolstered women's awareness, courage, and bravery, it has
also resulted in significant oppression and increased pressure on women
in Iran by the Islamic Republic," she added. "From the international
community, human rights and feminist organizations, as well as advocates
of democracy, freedom, and equality, I demand support for the
criminalization of gender apartheid and the liberation of women in Iran
and Afghanistan, who stand up defiantly," she demanded. Mohammadi is
serving multiple sentences, including 12 years and three months in
prison, 154 lashes, two years of exile, and various social and political
restrictions. While incarcerated, she has consistently spoken out
against the authorities, alleging systematic human rights violations,
and remained a staunch opponent of mandatory hijab. Dozens of women's
rights activists, union representatives, civic activists, and student
organizations have joined Mohammadi's cause. In a joint statement issued
on the occasion of International Women's Day, they urged world
governments to <boycott> the Islamic Republic as a <gender apartheid
regime.> >>

<<Iranian MP Reveals Elections Fraud and Vote-Buying in Recent Polls
An Iranian MP who lost her re-election bid last week has revealed that
the elections were marred with violations. Somayeh Mahmoudi said that
peoples' national ID numbers were used to cast votes without their
knowledge. <I heard reports of national ID cards being taken from my
city and used for voting in neighbouring areas,> she said in an
interview with Shargh newspaper on March 7. <Additionally, some
individuals were able to cast multiple votes.> Mahmoudi further accused
the elections of being marred by money laundering, stating that <votes
were bought and sold for amounts ranging from 100,000 ($1.60) to 1.5
million ($25) tomans. Voters were also offered gift packages.> <The
elections in Shahreza failed to achieve fair and transparent standards,>
she said of her constituency in central Isfahan province. Former MP
Jalal Rashidi Kochi has also acknowledged that <vote-buying has been an
issue for some time.> The March 1 elections were met with widespread
boycotts by activists and government critics.>>

<<Iran's Top Sunni Cleric Deems Electoral System <Ineffective>
Iran's most prominent Sunni cleric has said elections have failed to
bring <capable and deserving> officials into office. <Many perceive the
current electoral methods as ineffective in bringing in capable and
deserving leaders for the nation,> Molavi Abdulhamid, the Sunni Friday
prayer leader of the southeastern city of Zahedan, said on March 8.
Zahedan is the capital of Sistan and Baluchistan province, which is home
to Iran's Sunni Baluch minority of up to 2 million people. He used his
Friday sermon to urge the authorities to investigate the reasons behind
the declining voter turnouts.
<This recurring pattern of disengagement demands a thorough
examination,> the cleric said. Molavi, who has been a key dissenting
voice inside Iran since the eruption of nationwide anti-establishment
protests in September 2022, previously criticized the selection
processes for managers and officials in the Islamic Republic and
deplored the mass disqualification of <competent and capable> candidates
for elections. Last week's elections in Iran have set a significant
precedent with a record-low voter turnout since the 1979 Islamic
Revolution. At approximately 40 percent, the turnout figure contrasts
sharply with previous elections, where it often soared above 55 percent
and sometimes even reached 75 percent. Most of Iran's disgruntled and
disenchanted voters skipped elections for parliament and the Assembly of
Experts on March 1. They see the process as a false display of democracy
meant to validate a government that has not improved their living
conditions or personal freedoms.>>

<<Iranian Cleric Pressured to Make <False Confessions>
An incarcerated Iranian cleric known for his criticism of Supreme Leader
Ali Khamenei said he has been under pressure to confess to crimes he did
not commit. The cleric, Mohammad Taqi Akbarnejad, a Qom seminary
lecturer, has been lodged in Qom prison for 20 days. <For 14 days
following my arrest, I was held in solitary confinement at a security
detention center,> he said in a voice message. <They pressured me to
make false confessions for release without trial. They wanted me to
appear on camera and express regret for my words and actions,> he added.
The cleric said that after he had refused the officials' demands, the
security forces began fabricating cases against him. He said that people
in his community were being pressured to file complaints against him for
purportedly misleading them as a religious leader. <Due to accusations
of anti-government propaganda and insulting the clergy, I have been
denied all seminary benefits, including tuition fees and health
insurance,> Akbarnejad said. Akbarnejad was arrested on February 17 by
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) intelligence officers for
publishing videos critical of the government and Khamenei.>>

<<US Slams Iran for Destroying Graves of Minority Baha'is
The United States has denounced the desecration of over 30 graves of the
Baha'i religious minority in a Tehran cemetery, condemning the Islamic
Republic's persecution of the community. <We condemn the destruction of
30 graves by authorities at the Khavaran Cemetery near Tehran this week.
Baha'is in Iran continue to face violations of funeral and burial
rights,> the State Department Office of International Religious Freedom
said on March 7. <We have also seen the regime dramatically increase
Baha'i property seizures and use sham trials to subject Baha'is to
extended prison sentences. We will continue to use all available tools
to confront the regime's human rights abuses,> it added. According to a
statement issued by the Baha'i International Community (BIC) on March 5,
the Islamic Republic's authorities removed grave markers and used
bulldozers to flatten the resting places, effectively erasing any
evidence of the burials. The government's action follows a pattern
spanning two years of forcibly burying deceased Baha'is at Khavaran
Cemetery, denying families the right to conduct funeral rites, and not
adhering to Baha'i burial customs. Before the 1979 Islamic Revolution,
Tehran's Baha'i community owned an 80,000 square meter cemetery at
Khavaran and a 1.5 million square meter cemetery property in the
Kabirabad area of the capital. Both properties were confiscated in the
1980s by the new Islamic Republic, and at least 15,000 graves were
demolished at Khavaran. The government has intensified its crackdown on
members of the Baha'i faith, imprisoning dozens of them on spurious
charges over the past year, denying them access to higher education and
livelihoods, and confiscating or destroying personal properties.>>

<<Baluch Fuel Carrier Killed in Southeastern Iran
An Iranian Baluch fuel carrier was killed on March 7 after a
chase with the border forces of the Islamic Republic in southeastern
Zahedan. Haalvsh news agency which covers news in the Baluch-dominated
areas in Iran has identified the victim as Behzad Najafi. Haalvhsh
reported police forces chased Najafi's vehicle which caught fire after
being struck by gunfire. He died in the blaze. Many young men in the
southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchistan, which is home to Iran's
mostly Sunni ethnic Baluch minority, resort to transporting fuel to
Pakistan to make a meager living. They are called fuel carriers,
sookhtbar in Persian, although the government refers to them as
<smugglers> and treats them no better than terrorists.
Dozens of fuel carriers are fatally shot or injured by Iranian
security forces every year. According to a 2022 report by
Iranian-state-affiliated media, at least 168 Baluch fuel carrier drivers
have lost their lives on the Iranshahr-Sarbaz road alone.>>

Five Kolbars Shot and Critically Injured in Western Iran
Border forces of the Islamic Republic in the western Kurdistan province
have shot and seriously injured five kolbars amid an escalation of
violence against the transborder porters. Hengaw Human Rights
Organization reported that the forces on March 6 directly fired at the
kolbars near the border of Hengejal and threatened them with death
before forcing them to call emergency services <because they will need
it.> The kolbars were then ordered to flee and subsequently shot at
close range, reportedly from just two meters away. The Kurdistan Human
Rights Network confirmed the incident. They detailed that one kolbar,
Zaniar Siyahi, was arrested, beaten, and forced to strip before being
shot at close range. Salehi's condition is reported to be critical, and
he has been transferred to a hospital in Tabriz for treatment. The
kolbars are porters who haul goods on their backs and on foot across the
borders of Iran, over long distances, mostly in the impoverished,
mountainous Kurdish areas adjacent to Iraq. According to the Kolbar News
website, a total of 85 kolbars lost their lives while transporting goods
in the western provinces of West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan and Kermanshah
between March and September 2023. The causes of death included direct
fire by the military forces, blizzards, cold weather and falls from
mountains and heights.>>
