<<Amnesty International condemns Iran’s compulsory headscarf crackdown
<The Iranian authorities are terrorizing women and girls by subjecting
them to constant surveillance and policing,> Amnesty International's
Middle East and North Africa Deputy Director Diana Eltahawy said in a
press statement on Wednesday.
News Center- Ahead of International Women’s Day, Amnesty International
has released a press statement, condemning Iran for its crackdown
enforcing compulsory hijab laws. According to testimonies collected by
Amnesty International, tens of thousands of women have had their cars
arbitrarily confiscated as punishment for defying Iran’s veiling laws,
while others have been prosecuted and sentenced to flogging or prison
terms, or have faced other penalties such as fines or being forced to
attend <morality> classes. <In newly-collected testimonies from 46
people, 41 women, including a trans woman, one girl and four men, the
stark details are revealed over how a range of Iranian state agencies
are involved in persecuting women and girls or exercising their rights
to bodily autonomy and freedom of expression and belief,> the statement
said.
Amnesty International has released excerpts of 20 of the testimonies to
provide a glimpse into the frightening daily reality faced by women and
girls in Iran. At the time of publication, proceedings against six of
the women were ongoing. <In a sinister attempt to wear down resistance
to compulsory veiling in the wake of the ‘Woman Life Freedom’ uprising,
the Iranian authorities are terrorizing women and girls by subjecting
them to constant surveillance and policing, disrupting their daily lives
and causing them immense mental distress,> Amnesty International's
Middle East and North Africa Deputy Director Diana Eltahawy said in the
statement. <The intensifying persecution of women and girls is taking
place just weeks before the UN Human Rights Council is set to vote on
extending a fact-finding mission with a mandate to investigate
violations since the death in custody of Mahsa/Jina Amini, particularly
against women and children.> >>

<<Iranian Political Prisoner Attempts Suicide Amid Medical Neglect
An incarcerated Iranian political activist attempted to take his own
life Wednesday night in Tehran's notorious Evin prison, IranWire has
learned.
Mosayeb Raisi Yeganeh was subsequently taken to Loqman Hospital in the
capital. Upon his transfer to the hospital, Yeganeh was unconscious, and
his current condition remains unknown. Yeganeh was taken to Tajrish
Martyrs Hospital for medical treatment during the weekend. However,
prison authorities obstructed his treatment by hospital staff. Despite
experiencing severe breathing difficulties that led to his transfer to
Tajrish Martyrs Hospital, he was swiftly returned to prison after a
cursory examination without a lung scan. Yeganeh suffered significant
lung injuries in a fire at Evin prison last year. With limited time for
medical treatment between his release and re-arrest, coupled with
inadequate medical attention in prison and the onset of bronchitis,
there are growing concerns about his deteriorating condition. Yeganeh
was arrested for the second time on April 17, 2023. He was sentenced by
the 28th branch of the Revolutionary Court to six years in prison for
charges of <propaganda against the Islamic Republic,> <insulting sacred
values,> and <insulting the founder of the Islamic Republic.> >>

<<Iranian Reformist Tajzadeh Faces New Charges Amid Ongoing Jail Time
Iran's judiciary has summoned political activist and prominent reformist
Mostafa Tajzadeh to face fresh charges even as he remains incarcerated.
The new charges against him include <gathering and colluding to act
against national security> and <propaganda activity against the Islamic
Republic.> According to a report on Tajzadeh's Telegram channel, he
received the summons on March 6. He has to appear in court on March 9 to
answer the charges. However, Tajzadeh, who has frequently called for
structural changes in the country, refused to appear in court. He stated
that he would not accept the summons and anticipates further
imprisonment based on these new charges. In September 2022, the activist
was sentenced to five years in prison on charges including <collusion
against national security,> <spreading falsehoods,> and <propaganda
against the Islamic Republic.> Tajzadeh's summons comes shortly after
publicly labeling the March 1 elections as a <historic failure> for the
country's governance system, holding Khamenei responsible. The elections
saw a record-low voter turnout of around 40 percent. In a letter
published on his Telegram channel on February 18, Tajzadeh accused
Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei of neglecting Iran's pressing issues and
rendering the electoral process meaningless. Khamenei, who has the last
say on all matters in Iran, has withheld <the contributions of capable
individuals> and hindered <essential structural reform,> said Tajzadeh.
The political reformist has been repeatedly arrested since 2009 and
subjected to harsh sentences.>>

<<Iranian Officials Bar Elderly Women from Playing Football
Intelligence officials in a remote Iranian village have denied access to
a group of elderly women to a dirt field for playing football, IranWire
reports.
The women, residents of Amerkajla village in the northern city of Abbas
Abad and aged between 50 and 60, were informed that their activity was
deemed <illegal> and a <breach of norms.> The decision stems from the
Islamic Republic's stance on women's participation in football. The
women wanted to stay active and bond with each other by playing
football, according to IranWire sources. They set up matches, using
different colored headscarves to tell the teams apart because they
didn't have many resources. These weekly sessions had a positive impact
on their well-being and morale, the sources said. They were approached
by three plainclothed officials who informed them that playing football
outdoors was prohibited for women, regardless of their age. The women
were advised to rent an indoor facility instead. The officials expressed
concerns that the older women's participation in an outdoor sport could
negatively influence the youth and potentially lead to <lawlessness.>
Financial constraints prevent these women from renting an indoor
facility, so they remain hesitant to abandon their outdoor games.
However, the Abbas Abad Intelligence Department warned them that
returning to the field would be considered a violation with potential
legal consequences.>>

<<Kurdish Political Prisoner in Iran Faces Fresh Accusation
Kurdish political prisoner Saada Khadirzadeh, who was previously cleared
of murder charges by the Supreme Court of Iran, now faces a new
accusation in a Revolutionary Court. She is now accused of <assisting in
the purchase of weapons.> Khadirzadeh could have been released on parole
or furlough since she had already completed more than two years of her
initial sentence. However, with this new accusation, Iranian security
institutions appear intent on keeping her imprisoned. In February, the
Supreme Court overturned Khadirzadeh's ten-year sentence for <helping in
murder.> She still faces separate sentences for <helping her husband to
escape> and having <membership> of a Kurdish opposition party, amounting
to five years in prison. Reports say the new complaint, filed by the
family of the plaintiff with reported ties to the Intelligence
Department, aims to keep Khadirzadeh and her daughter behind bars. The
first hearing of the new case, held in February, was reportedly marred
by disrespect and threats from the plaintiffs. They even tried to beat
Khedirzadeh's baby daughter. Despite her lawyer protesting, the judge
justified the new case, claiming that even if the Supreme Court <broke
the verdict,> Khadirzadeh faces a new accusation. Her fate remains
uncertain as the Kurdish political prisoner awaits the verdict in the
new case. She has also been denied any time outside prison with her
daughter.>>

order by participating in and organizing protest gatherings and
resisting police officers.> The court verdict also prohibits them from

<<Jailed Iranian Rapper Saman Yasin Sent to Psychiatric Hospital Again
Saman Yasin, a well-known Iranian rapper imprisoned since the 2022
anti-government uprising, has once again been transferred to a
psychiatric hospital in less than a year. This is the second time he has
been sent to a psychiatric hospital. His family was informed about the
transfer through a phone call, as reported by the Kurdistan Human Rights
Network. Previously, on July 22, 2023, he was transferred from Rajaei
Shahr prison in Karaj, near Tehran, to Aminabad Psychiatric Hospital. He
returned to jail after a few days of involuntary hospitalization. Yasin
expressed his despair in a recent letter to the head of the Islamic
Republic's judiciary, detailing his frustration after 18 months of
uncertainty and transfers between Tehran and Karaj prisons. <You've
staged mock executions, hospitalized me... What's left? Take my life too
and be done with it,> he wrote. Yasin, a vocal critic of Iran's clerical
establishment, was arrested on October 2, 2022, and tortured during his
detention before being sentenced to death on October 29 on the charge of
<waging war against God.>
The Supreme Court later overturned the sentence.
In his letter, Yasin highlighted his ongoing struggles with mental and
physical health issues, saying, <I continue to suffer, yet incompetent
officials cannot even facilitate my access to medical care. > <Please
inform me of the crime I have committed. If I am found guilty, then
imprison me, if not, then acquit me,> he wrote.>>

<<Top Swedish Court Rejects Review of Ex-Iranian Official's Life
Sentence
Sweden's Supreme Court has refused to review the life imprisonment
sentence for Hamid Nouri, a former Iranian judicial official. <The
Supreme Court has now decided not to grant leave to appeal. This means
that the judgment of the Court of Appeal stands,> a Swedish court said
on March 6.
Nouri was convicted of participating in the mass executions of political
prisoners in 1988 while he was an assistant prosecutor at Gohardasht
prison in Iran. Nouri was arrested in 2019 upon arrival at Stockholm
airport, and his trial began in August 2021 after Swedish authorities
invoked the principle of <universal jurisdiction.> He was sentenced to
life in prison in 2022 by the Stockholm District Court, which convicted
him of <crime against international law.> The ruling garnered
significant attention online, with many celebrating it as a <victory for
justice.> Plaintiffs in the case, alongside human rights activists,
expressed hope that the ruling will set a precedent for holding Iranian
officials accountable for human rights violations. They emphasized the
need for increased international cooperation to address such abuses in
Iran. The Iranian government, however, condemned the Swedish court's
decision and took retaliatory actions, including the detention of two
Swedish citizens.>>

<<Floods Displace 500,000 in Iran's Sistan and Baluchistan: Government
Aid Missing
For over six days, half a million people in southeastern Sistan and
Baluchistan province have been left homeless and stranded amid
devastation.
Severe flooding has ravaged farms, mud houses, rural roads, and local
infrastructure, closing roads and isolating villages from nearby cities
and each other. With roads flooded, bridges broken, and pathways washed
out, air assistance has become the only feasible means of aid. IranWire
sources report a clear absence of governmental action to support those
impacted by the floods. Visuals emerging from the province depict a
scene all too familiar, which is a repeat of the tragedy faced four
years prior during the floods. Homes are in ruins, livestock is
submerged in mud, and fertile lands lay waste. Baluch activists
highlight that while media and aid have concentrated on the Dashtiari
region, the sporadic restoration of internet service reveals a far more
dire situation. The devastation is most severe along the Kajoo River,
where six villages, home to over a thousand people, have been severed
from the world for a week. Eyewitnesses recount the perilous journey of
a pregnant woman's journey across the swollen river on a tractor,
seeking safety. Moreover, widespread internet outages have further cut
off flood-stricken communities, silencing their cries for help.
Human rights advocate Fariba Borhanzehi points to the region's
vulnerability, a result of persistent neglect in economic, healthcare,
and educational infrastructure. Her words paint a picture of collapsed
homes, uprooted families, and an enduring crisis, emphasizing the
chronic challenges faced by the region's inhabitants. Another Baluch
civil activist living in Iran highlighted the desperate need for medical
supplies amidst government indifference. He voiced suspicion that
authorities are indifferent to the suffering, perhaps even finding
satisfaction in the plight of those they should protect. <You can see it
in their actions,> he explained. <They stop fuel trucks meant to help
our people. Gas stations won't sell fuel.> <Security institutions block
aid to flood victims,> he added. Masoud Raisi, another activist, told
IranWire about the inaction of government-affiliated entities like the
Crisis Management Organization. In contrast, he commended the Red
Crescent, noting the exceptional commitment of local Baluch field
workers, despite the inaction of others.>>

<<Iranian Film Collective in Germany Takes on Social Issues with Short
Films
A group of Iranian artists and activists have come together in Germany
to form a unique film collective called Perspective. Their goal is not
only to tell stories but also to inspire critical thinking and challenge
societal norms through short films on social media. Launched in
September 2023, the group has already released four films tackling
various social issues. <Our films use an analytical and inquisitive
approach to explore complex social, political, cultural, and economic
issues,> Pooyan Mokari, a writer, journalist, and member of Perspective,
said. <We aim to move beyond simplistic narratives and encourage empathy
and understanding among viewers,> he added. <Perspective> films feature
professional actors who dramatize social problems, followed by expert
analysis and potential solutions. <We aim to offer fresh perspectives on
how to approach these challenges,> said Mokari. The group emphasizes
offering alternative viewpoints rather than dictating solutions. <We
want to present a different way of thinking and demonstrate the
possibility of different approaches to complex issues,> Mokari added.
Perspective has already addressed topics like economic difficulties and
navigating online relationships as parents. Their next film, set for
release next Monday, will explore the topic of executions.>>

<<Iranian Authorities Level Dozens of Baha'i Graves
Authorities in the Islamic Republic have demolished over 30 graves
belonging to the Baha'i religious minority at a cemetery in Tehran.
According to a statement issued by the Baha'i International Community (BIC)
on March 5, the authorities removed grave markers and used bulldozers to
flatten the resting places, effectively erasing any evidence of the
burials. The government's action follows a pattern spanning two years
where it forcibly buried deceased Baha'is in this location, denying
families the right to participate in funeral rites and not adhering to
Baha'i burial customs. <It's almost Nowruz [Persian new year], and while
families who have recently lost their loved ones are still grieving
their passing, the Iranian authorities impose fresh horrors on them,
proving, ultimately, their utter inhumanity,> said Simin Fahandej,
Representative of the Baha'i International Community, to the United
Nations in Geneva, said in the statement. <They are destroying the
graves of people who died only in the past few months, even just a few
weeks ago -- people whose memories are still fresh in the minds and
hearts of their loved ones. <No religious or cultural norm, in any part
of the world, supports this kind of cruel desecration. This is cultural
cleansing, through the destruction of graves and cemeteries, aiming to
erase Baha'i identity from the consciousness of the Iranian people,> she
added. Before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Tehran's Baha'i community
owned an 80,000 square meter cemetery at Khavaran and a 1.5 million
square meter cemetery property in the Kabirabad area of the capital.
Both properties were confiscated in the 1980s by the new Islamic
Republic, and at least 15,000 graves were demolished at Khavaran. The
government has intensified its crackdown on members of the Baha'i faith,
imprisoning dozens of them on spurious charges over the past year,
denying them access to higher education and livelihoods, and
confiscating or destroying their personal properties.>>

<<Iran <Terrorizing> Women Through Hijab Crackdown: Amnesty
International
The Islamic Republic's authorities are <terrorizing> women by waging a
large-scale campaign to enforce compulsory hijab laws in Iran, said
Amnesty International. The authorities have started extensive
surveillance of women and girls in public spaces coupled with mass
police checks specifically targeting women drivers. Consequently,
thousands of Iranian women have been deprived of their vehicles,
confiscated without justification, as a consequence of alleged
violations of Iran's hijab laws. Several others have been punished with
flogging, imprisonment, fines, or mandatory attendance in <morality>
classes, according to a report published by Amnesty International on
March 5. Testimonies collected by the human rights organization, along
with official documents like court verdicts, show that multiple state
agencies in Iran are persecuting women and girls for expressing their
rights to freedom of expression and belief. Amnesty gathered testimonies
from 46 people - 41 women, one girl, one trans woman, and four men - in
February 2024. It has shared excerpts from 20 testimonies to shed light
on the challenging daily experiences of women and girls under the
Islamic Republic. Many witnesses in the report say they were arrested
and put on trial in recent months. <In a sinister attempt to wear down
resistance to compulsory veiling in the wake of the 'Woman Life Freedom'
uprising, Iran’s authorities are terrorizing women and girls by
subjecting them to constant surveillance and policing, disrupting their
daily lives and causing them immense mental distress,> said Diana
Eltahawy, Amnesty International's Deputy Director for the Middle East
and North Africa. All women in Iran are stipulated to conceal their hair
with a headscarf or hijab, and wear loose-fitting trousers under their
coats while in public. But a growing number of Iranian women have
appeared in public without head coverings. As a result, the Ministry of
Interior has intensified pressure to enforce the hijab law, deploying
enforcers on the streets, imposing fines for refusing to wear a
headscarf, confiscating their cars, and denying them government

imminent deportation from Sweden to Iran, raising concerns for her
future and safety. According to a report received by the Hengaw
