<<Iranian Activist in Turkiye Pleas for Visa to Avoid Deportation
Iranian right activist Shilan Mirzaei, who has been languishing in a deportation camp in northern Turkiye for more than a month, says she will be sent back to Iran if she does not get a visa from a third country. In an audio file released on November 30, Mirzaei says she has been informed by Turkish immigration officials that she needs to obtain an emergency visa and depart Turkiye within 60 days, or she will be deported to Iran. <I only have 60 more days to escape the clutches of the Islamic Republic's criminal regime and save my life and my family,> says Mirzaei, a mother of two young children. Highlighting inconsistencies in the Turkish court rulings, the activist says that her prolonged detention in the Bandirma deportation camp <akin to a prison> shows the authorities' intention to report her to Iran. The Turkish government has restricted Mirzaei's ability to communicate about her case for over 36 days, she says, adding that her repeated appeals to various United Nations agencies for help have yielded no results.
Turkish authorities arrested Mirzaei and transferred her to the Bandirma deportation camp on October 24. She was later informed that the Iranian authorities had requested her extradition to Iran. The deportation of asylum seekers, refugees and political and civil activists living in Turkiye to Iran has seen a worrisome surge in recent years. UN refugee officials have also reduced their activities in Turkiye and now defer the handling of refugees to the government. Earlier this year, Turkiye deported political activist Shahryar Baratinya to Iran, leading to his imprisonment in Tehran's Evin prison.>>

<<Detained Baha'i Mother Remains Missing 24 Days After Arrest
Over 24 days after the arrest of Iren Rahmani, a Baha'i citizen and mother of two, her family still has no information on her whereabouts or the charges against her. Her family, particularly her two young children, aged 2 and 4, are struggling to cope with her absence and the uncertainty surrounding her situation, according to a source who spoke with IranWire. Rahmani was arrested on November 7, when security forces raided the home of Babak Zeinali in Karaj, detaining 10 Baha'i citizens. Among those detained Iren Rahmani and her husband Eman Ehsani. Agents later accompanied the couple to their home, searched their property, and then took both of them to an undisclosed location. On November 25, Eman Ehsani and three other detainees were released on bail. Iran Rahmani's family is concerned about her well-being and the lack of transparency surrounding her arrest and detention. They have been able to contact her only twice since she was taken away, and these brief interactions have left them with more questions than clarity, according to the source. Baha'is are routinely denied their fundamental rights to freedom of religion or belief. They face systematic persecution in all areas of life, including arbitrary arrests and imprisonments, home searches and property confiscations, access to education and livelihoods, as well as official hate speech in Iranian media, and even the right to proper burials.>>

<<Two More Political Prisoners Arbitrarily Executed in Iran
The Iranian authorities have executed two more political prisoners, bringing to 707 the number of executions in the country since the beginning of the year, according to a human rights group. Ali Saber Motlaq and Kamran Rezaei were hanged on November 30 in Rasht's Lakan Prison and Shiraz Central Prison, respectively, the Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) group said. Motlaq, 62, was arrested in the 1980s on charges of membership in the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI or MEK) and murdering an Islamic Republic official. He was later released and left the country.
After returning to Iran in 2019, he was rearrested and sentenced to death in the same murder case, despite a lack of evidence. IHR said that Rezaei was arrested in November 2019 during nationwide protests sparked by an abrupt fuel price increase, and was sentenced to death over the alleged killing of a member of the paramilitary Basij force. An informed source told the group that Rezaei was forced to admit under torture to killing the Basiji with a machete. IHR Director Mahmood Amiry Moghaddam urged the international community to <break their silence on the arbitrary execution of more than three people per day by the Islamic Republic.> <The international community's silence on executions is considered a green light by the Islamic Republic,> he added.>>

<<Iranian Lawyer Rejects New Charges Against Rapper Salehi
The lawyer of Iranian dissident rapper Toomaj Salehi has criticized the authorities over the <unlawful> rearrest of his client, saying that the new accusations against him are totally unfounded. On November 30, Salehi was returned to jail less than two weeks after his release on bail. The judiciary's Mizan news agency said that he is accused of <publishing false information and disturbing the public mind.> Salehi was released from prison on November 18 after spending more than a year in custody. In a video published after his release, he describes the torture he endured during his detention and said he had filed a complaint against Isfahan's General Intelligence Department. Mizan claimed that neither Salehi nor his lawyer Amir Raisian have filed any complaint. Raisian rejected this claim, asserting that the case was sent to Branch 14 of the Public Prosecutor's Office.
The lawyer also revealed that two individuals were arrested and taken to an undisclosed location along with Salehi. Salehi, 32, was initially arrested in October 2022 after making public statements in support of nationwide protests that had erupted the previous month. A court sentenced him to six years and three months in prison in July on a charge of <corruption on Earth.> His release on bail came after the Supreme Court found <flaws in the original sentence> and sent the case back to a lower court. The artist had spent nearly 13 months in custody, including 252 days in solitary confinement. In his video published on November 27, Salehi says he neither admitted guilt nor cooperated with the security forces, despite the torture and other ill-treatment he endured while in custody. <They tortured me for a prolonged time, striking me on the head and face, and even breaking my arm and leg,> he says, adding that his jailers most probably injected him with adrenaline to keep him conscious in order to subject him to more torture.>>

<<Hundreds of Fake Apps Floods Iranian Banking Sector
A cybercampaign targeting customers of Iranian banks has grown in magnitude in recent months, with nearly 300 malicious Android apps targeting users for their account credentials, credit cards and crypto wallets, researchers say. The campaign first came to light in July, when researchers from Sophos detailed a cluster of 40 credential-harvesting apps targeting customers of four major Iranian banks - Bank Mellat, Bank Saderat, Resalat Bank and Central Bank of Iran. These apps mimicked legitimate versions found on Cafe Bazaar, a smartphone application marketplace popular in Iran, and were distributed through phishing websites. Hackers were able to install and hide their copycat apps on victims' phones, harvesting logins, intercepting SMS messages, and stealing financial information. This week, the US-based cybersecurity firm Zimperium revealed the existence of 245 more apps associated with the same, ongoing campaign that now targets customers of 12 Iranian banks. In the new campaign, the hackers incorporated additional evasion tactics to fly under the radar and added more capabilities to their malware to make it easier to harvest credentials and steal data. Besides banks, the attackers have also started probing for data relating to cryptocurrency platforms. The fake apps have been limited to Android devices, but evidence suggests that the hackers are now likely working on a malware variant that targets iOS devices, the researchers said. It is not yet clear which threat actor is behind the campaign and how many users were affected by it.>>

<<Zahra Safaei and her children are sentenced to 15 years in jail
Political prisoner Zahra Safaei and her children, Parastoo Moini and Mohammad Massoud Moini have been sentenced to five years imprisonment, each. The 26th Branch of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran issued these verdicts. Zahra Safaei and her children were informed of their sentences on November 26, 2024. They were sentenced to five years in prison on charges of <collusion and assembly to commit a crime against national security.>
Zahra Safaei and her children's trial convened on November 18, 2024.
Zahra Safaei and her children were arrested on September 13, 2023, on the eve of the anniversary of last year's uprising, by Intelligence Ministry agents in Tehran and transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison. Zahra Safaei and Parastoo Moini were released from jail on February 9, 2023, after three years of captivity, torture, and mistreatment in the Qarchak and Evin prisons.
Who is Zahra Safaei?
Security forces arrested Zahra Safaei and her daughter, Parastoo Moini, in Tehran on February 24, 2020. They were subsequently transferred to the Intelligence Ministry's detention center (Ward 209 of Evin Prison). Zahra Safaei and Parastoo Mo’ini were transferred to Qarchak Prison in early March 2020. On June 28, 2020, Mrs. Safaei was temporarily released from Qarchak Prison, until the end of her trial, on bail of 300 million Tomans. But she was rearrested on July 26, 2020, when she went to the Prosecutor's Office of Evin Prison to review her case and that of her daughter. On July 27, 2020, she was transferred to Qarchak Prison. Political prisoner Zahra Safaei, 60, suffered a heart stroke on October 27, 2020, after being harassed and intimidated by prison authorities. Zahra Safaei, born in 1962, is the daughter of Hassan Ali Safaei, one of Tehran Bazaar's well-known merchants. Mr. Safaei was one of the political prisoners under the deposed Shah time, who was executed in Evin Prison by the mullahs' regime in 1981 for being a PMOI supporter. Zahra Safaei was a political prisoner in the 1960s for eight years in Evin and Qezel Hesar prisons for supporting the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).

Zahra Safaei (middle), and her daughter and son

Who is Parastoo Moini?
Parastoo Moini, an electrical engineering student at Qazvin International University, was arrested on February 24, 2020. Security forces broke into their home, brutalized her and her mother, Zahra Safaei, and arrested them. After spending one year in temporary detention, she was sentenced to 5 years in prison on charges of <assembly and collusion.> In May 2020, Ms. Moini, upon her release from solitary confinement, attempted to continue her studies in Qarchak Prison. However, university officials said that she could not study while in prison. As a result, she requested to withdraw from the final exams through the prison's judicial department. On the eve of the beginning of the new semester at school, she requested to return to her studies at Qazvin International University through the Special Cases Commission. In the final week of May, she was informed that she had been expelled and prohibited from entering the dormitory and university premises.>>

<<Istanbul Conference on Iran Uprising Canceled to <Not Offend the Islamic Republic>
A French anthropologist who was scheduled to hold a conference in Turkey on Iran's Woman, Life, Freedom protest movement says the event has been canceled <to not offend the Islamic Republic of Iran in the current context of the war in Gaza.> Chowra Makaremi said on the social media platform X that the conference, which was set to take place at the French Institute of Anatolian Studies in Istanbul on December 1, was called off <at the request of the French Embassy.>
<A shame: it's more important than ever to talk about uprisings and revolutionary feminism. To destroy these binary logics of realpolitik & war, which leave no prospect of political emancipation,> the researcher of Iranian origin said in a separate post. <The betrayal of the Iranian people is total and complete, and serves no one anywhere, in the region or elsewhere,> she also wrote. The conference was organized after the publication of her book Women ! Life ! Freedom ! Echoes of a Revolutionary Uprising in Iran.
The monthslong demonstrations demanding fundamental changes in Iran were sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody for an alleged head-scarf violation. They were brutally put down by security forces. More than 500 people were killed in the repression and over 20,000 were unlawfully detained, including many journalists, human rights advocates and civil activists. Following biased trials, the judiciary has handed down stiff sentences, including the death penalty, to protesters.>>

<<Iranian Protest Rapper Salehi Arrested Again
Prominent Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi was rearrested in the northern city of Babol, less than two weeks after his release from more than a year in captivity. According to reports shared on Salehi's social media accounts, the singer was detained by armed plainclothes agents on November 30 and taken to an undisclosed location. The judiciary's Mizan news agency said that he is accused of <publishing false information and disturbing public opinion.> Salehi, 32, was initially arrested in October 2022 after making public statements in support of nationwide protests that had erupted the previous month. His detention sparked widespread condemnation in Iran and abroad, and prompted international campaigns calling for his release.
Despite that, a court sentenced him to six years and three months in prison in July on a charge of <corruption on Earth.> He was freed on bail on November 18 after the Supreme Court returned his case to a lower court. The artist had spent nearly 13 months in custody, including 252 days in solitary confinement. In a video published on his YouTube channel on November 27, Salehi said that he neither admitted guilt nor cooperated with the security forces, despite the torture and other ill-treatment he endured while in custody. <They tortured me for a prolonged time, striking me on the head and face, and even breaking my arm and leg,> he says, adding that his jailers most probably injected him with adrenaline to keep him conscious in order to subject him to more torture.>>

<<New Committee Formed in Iran to Harass Female University Students
Iranian authorities have established a committee tasked with intimidating and harassing female students at several universities, including Tabriz University in the country's northwest. On November 29, the Telegram channel of the Student Union Councils reported the creation of the informal parallel institution called <Afad,> an acronym for <Social Cultural Action at University.> Afad has been sending SMS messages to mainly female students, accusing them of violating <hijab regulations> and demanding they appear before the committee for questioning, the councils said. The student organization said that Afad is using a list provided by university security officers. Student activists have protested the increased security measures put in place on campuses across the country and stricter enforcement of the mandatory headscarf law since the start of the academic year.
These measures include hundreds of summonses to disciplinary committees, disciplinary actions, temporary suspensions, and expulsions of students and faculty members.>>

<<Baha'i Woman in Mashhad Sentenced to a Year in Prison Her Beliefs
Branch 37 of the Court of Appeal of Khorasan Razavi province has sentenced Noshin Mesbah, a Baha'i resident of Mashhad, to one year in prison on the charge of being a member of the Baha'i community. Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Mashhad, headed by Judge Hadi Mansouri, had previously sentenced Mesbah to three years in prison on the charge of being <a member of a group ... with the intention of disrupting national security> due to her Baha'i faith. She was also sentenced to eight months in prison for <propaganda activities> against the Islamic Republic.
However, the provincial appeals court has reduced the initial sentence. According to the decision of the Court of Appeal, Mesbah was sentenced to one year in prison. The court acquitted Mesbah of the charge of <propaganda activities.> Baha'is are routinely denied their fundamental rights to freedom of religion or belief. <<Iranian Authorities Destroy Homes of Ethnic Baluch in Zahedan
Iranian authorities have destroyed the homes of members of the Baluch community in the southeastern city of Zahedan, according to a group that monitors rights violations in Sistan and Baluchistan. Haalvsh reported that police and municipal forces raided the homes in Shirabad neighborhood on the morning of November 30, cut off the electricity in the area and evicted the families before the houses were demolished using loaders.
The group reported a heavy security presence in the area.
It was unclear what prompted the destruction. Zahedan is the capital of Sistan and Baluchistan, which is home to the country's Sunni Baluch minority of up to 2 million people. A few weeks ago, police sealed off private schools in the Shirabad area of Zahedan. The reason invoked was that the schools were being managed by Sunni clerics. The Iranian Teachers' Union Council published a video of one of the schools, stating that at least 400 underprivileged students were enrolled there. The council emphasized that the teachers of the school, who received <meager salaries,> were <prohibited from working.> According to the representative of Sistan and Baluchistan in the Supreme Council of Provinces, one third of students in the province are forced to drop out of school due to problems such as school shortages and rising tuition costs.>>

<<Father Of Executed Iranian Protester Detained for Over 100 Days
The father of Mohammad Mehdi Karami, an Iranian protester executed in January, has now been arbitrarily held in Karaj Central Prison for more than 100 days, with no charges being brought against him. On August 21, agents of the Ministry of Intelligence arrested Mashallah Karami at his home in Karaj, near Tehran. His electronic devices, including his laptop and mobile phone, and those of his relatives were confiscated and their bank cards were blocked. Karami was held in the Karaj Intelligence Department detention center until October 28, when he was then transferred to Karaj Central prison. Sources say the judiciary has set a bail amount of 7 billion tomans ($140,000) for his temporary release, an exorbitant amount the family has been unable to gather. The authorities have also arbitrarily detained Karami's lawyer, Amir Hossein Kohkan. Over the past 100 days, intelligence forces raided the Karami family's home twice, destroying medals belonging to their son and damaging their property. According to Informed sources, Karami's wife and her other son have been forced to leave their home due to harassment by security forces. Mohammad Mehdi Karami was sentenced to death in December 2022 and executed the following month over his alleged involvement in the death of a member of the Basij paramilitary force during an anti-government demonstration. Following the execution, Mashallah Karami published images of himself visiting the graves of his son and Mohammad Hosseini, who was also sentenced to death in the case and executed in January. The defendants were sentenced to capital punishment based on <confessions> extracted under torture. They didn't have access to legal counsel during the proceedings.>>
