<<Dozens of Karaj Prisoners on Hunger Strike in Protest at Jail
Conditions
A group of 38 political prisoners held in Ghezelhesar prison in Karaj,
near Tehran, went on a hunger strike on September 5 to protest their
recent transfer from other penitentiaries and their dire conditions of
detention. <In addition to the 13 prisoners transferred from [Tehran's]
Evin prison to Ghezelhesar, 25 others were also relocated there from
Gohardasht prison,> a source told IranWire. The inmates say they were
transferred without warning, according to the source, a tactic often
used by the Iranian authorities to intimidate and silence dissent. The
prisoners transferred from Evin prison were later accused of <attempting
to incite a riot> and moved to a death ward, the source said, adding
that their living conditions there are <extremely harsh.> They are not
allowed to call outside the prison unless a guard hears what they say.>>

<<More Academics Sacked in Iran ahead of Mahsa Anniversary
A professor, an assistant professor and a lecturer have been discharged
from their posts at three Tehran universities, as the Iranian
authorities intensify their crackdown on academics supporting the
<Woman, Life, Freedom> protest movement. The sacking of Maham Meiqany, a
professor at Tehran University of Fine Arts, Sara Malekan, an assistant
professor at Amir Kabir University, and Mojtaba Pourbakhsh, a prominent
Iranian sports presenter and lecturer at Azad University, comes just
days ahead of the first anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death in police
custody. The government, fearing a flare up in protests ahead of the
September 16 anniversary and the start of a new academic year later this
month, has ramped up its crackdown against activists, journalists and
families of those killed in the widespread demonstrations. The
authorities have made clear they would not tolerate a repeat of the type
of student demonstrations that shook universities across the country
following Amini's death, and are purging the ranks of university
professors, dismissing dozens of them over the past months. Meiqany, a
well-known storyteller and playwright, closed his classes at the Faculty
of Performing Arts last year in protest of the mass arrest of protesting
students. The professor confirmed his dismissal from Tehran University
of Fine Arts on Instagram and said that she remains committed to her
students. Meanwhile, Iran's union of student councils announced that
Malekan received a termination letter at Amir Kabir University after
returning from maternity leave. It said the assistant professor at the
Faculty of Management had criticized the management and security
environment at the university. Pourbakhsh, known for producing and
hosting programs on state-run Sports TV, shared on his Instagram account
the official termination notice issued by the Ministry of Science. In a
message accompanying the document, he expressed his gratitude to the
<distinguished individuals within the field of sports science who
provided him with the unique opportunity to engage in classroom
teaching> at the university. Pourbakhsh has been an outspoken supporter
of the nationwide protests sparked by the death of the 22-year-old Amini.>>

<<August 2023 Report: Dismissal of Professors across 150 Iranian
Universities
Sweeping Dismissal of Professors across 150 Iranian Universities: A
Strategy Doomed to Fail
The summoning and expulsion of students, which started months ago, have
now escalated to the dismissal of professors in August. This action,
occurring on the eve of the first anniversary of the nationwide uprising
in 2022 and the reopening of schools and universities in Iran, reflects
the Mullah regime’s fear of another uprising. They seek to suppress the
leaders of last year's uprising, the students, and silence the center of
protests, the university. During last year's nationwide movement,
universities played a significant role as protest hubs. Up to now,
numerous university students and professors have faced arrests,
summonses, bans from entry, suspensions, and terminations. In August,
the pace of dismissal of professors picked up, particularly those who
supported protesting students or joined nationwide protests. They were
let go under various excuses, including retirement and academic
performance. Notably, some of the dismissed professors are women. As
professors are being dismissed, the authorities are also continuing to
arrest and imprison teachers, as well as expel and suspend students.
Dismissal of Professors: Changes across 150 Universities on the Brink of
the New Academic Year
Dozens of university professors have faced termination or suspension
since Raisi assumed office. However, in recent months, the pace of
dismissal of professors has significantly accelerated. Some of these
professors had experienced salary cuts or suspensions for several
months, and they have now received their formal dismissal notices. The
dismissals occurred through both written notices and phone calls. (The
state-run Tejaratnews.com, August 28, 2023) These professors hail from a
range of universities, including Sharif, Tehran, Allameh, Melli, Azad
Tehran, Azad Karaj, Al-Zahra, Kurdistan, Persian Gulf, Ferdowsi Mashhad,
Art, Surah, Medical Sciences, Tabriz, Hakim Sabzevari, Bahonar Kerman,
Jahrom, Azad Sanandaj, Medical Sciences of Iran, Azad Qom, and Isfahan.
As of September 3rd, the identities of 25 of these professors have been
confirmed. Among them, notable female professors such as Hamideh Khademi,
Ameneh Aali, Baharak Akhtardanesh, Raheleh Ali Moradzadeh, Lili Varharam,
Azin Movahed, and Somayyeh Sima who have been either expelled from the
university, suspended, or prohibited from teaching.>>

<<Iranian News Website Blocked amid Media Crackdown
The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has urged the
Iranian authorities to reverse their recent decision to shut down the
news website Entekhab and <cease any attempts to censor the media.> The
move came amid an intensifying crackdown on civil society and the media
ahead of the September 16 anniversary of the start of monthslong
protests sparked by Masha Amini's death in police custody. <Truthful and
open reporting on matters of state policy is vitally important for the
Iranian public,> Sherif Mansour, CPJ's Middle East and North Africa
program coordinator, said in a statement on September 5. The previous
day, the Press Supervisory Board of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic
Guidance revoked Entekhab's operating license indefinitely and blocked
its website and social media accounts in the country. The ban followed
an August 22 video report which criticized President Ebrahim Raisi's
foreign policy. The Press Supervisory Board said the report was <in
contradiction with national interests and against the Islamic Republic's
foreign policy principles.> Entekhab, one of the most visited news
websites in Iran, is close to reformists. Iranian authorities have
arrested dozens of journalists since the eruption of the
anti-establishment demonstrations last year. Known for its harsh
internet censorship, which includes banning thousands of websites, the
Islamic Republic has periodically suppressed or cut internet access for
most Iranians to prevent them from accessing and disseminating
information online and from safe online communications.>>

<<Baha'i Woman in Iran Handed 16-Year Prison Term
A Baha'i resident of the central Iranian city of Semnan has been
sentenced to 16 years in prison for alleged <propaganda activity>
against the Islamic Republic and leading a group aimed at <destabilizing
the country's security.> According to a report received by Iranwire,
Branch 1 of the Semnan Revolutionary Court also fined Shahdaokht
Khanjani 50 million tomans ($1,000) and deprived her of social rights
for 17 years.
The sentence was handed down in absentia.
Khanjani was arrested in June and released on bail 10 days later.
The Iranian government has intensified its crackdown on members of the
Baha'i faith, imprisoning dozens of them on spurious charges over the
past few weeks. On August 16, the Baha'i International Community
denounced a <new wave of repression> targeting Baha'is, saying that
approximately 60 of them have been arrested or imprisoned across the
country in recent weeks. Shia Islam is the state religion in Iran. The
constitution recognizes several minority faiths, including Christianity,
Judaism, and Zoroastrianism, but not the Baha'i faith.>>

<<Iranian Political Activist Ramezanzadeh Jailed with Dangerous
Criminals
Iranian authorities have transferred civil activist and political
prisoner Reza Ramezanzadeh to the ward housing dangerous criminals in
Tehran's Greater Tehran Prison, IranWire has learned. The transfer took
place on September 5, one week after he presented himself at the prison
to start a one-year prison sentence. Ramezanzadeh was arrested during
street demonstrations in Tehran in October 2022 and released a few days
later. In May this year, Branch 26 of Tehran Revolutionary Court
sentenced him to one year's imprisonment on the charge of <propaganda
activity> against the Islamic Republic. The Evin Prosecutor's Office
informed the civil activist of his sentence on August 27 and told him to
hand himself over to Greater Tehran Prison two days later. Previously,
Ramezanzadeh was arrested and sentenced to prison over his participation
in widespread demonstrations in November 2019.>>

<<Lawyer Meets Iranian Singer Jailed for Supporting Women's Rights
The defense lawyer representing Iranian singer Mehdi Yarrahi says he has
been able to meet his client in Tehran's Evin prison on September 5,
eight days after his arrest for his latest song encouraging women to
remove their mandatory headscarves. Yarrahi appeared to be in good
spirits, but he is receiving medical attention at the prison's hospital
for inflamed skin and pain in his right ear, lawyer Mustafa Nili said in
a series of tweets. <I haven't been able to read his case yet, and
that's why I can't say what the exact charges are. I hope to be able to
read the case on Saturday,> Nili added. During the meeting, the singer
conveyed his determination to take legal action against officers who
failed to uphold the law and respect his civil rights during his arrest.
Yarrahi was arrested on August 28 following the release of the song
Roosarito, or Your Headscarf in English, which was accompanied by a
video showing women in various social settings without their mandatory
headscarves, some dancing to the music. Yarrahi dedicated the song to
the <brave women of Iran who shine courageously at the forefront of the
'Women Life Freedom’ movement,'> a reference to the monthslong
nationwide protests sparked by the September 2022 death of 22-year-old
Mahsa Amini while she was in police custody for an alleged hijab
violation. As a protest against Yarrahi's arrest, Iranian social media
users posted and shared videos of their own dance performances and
renditions of his songs.
Artists, political activists and journalists have also rallied behind
the singer since his jailing.
The Iranian authorities, fearing a flare up in protests ahead of the
first anniversary of Amini's death on September 16, have ramped up their
crackdown against dissent in recent weeks. A growing number of women
refusing to wear a head covering have been arrested and prosecuted,
while dozens of businesses have been closed for failing to enforce
compulsory hijab rules for women visitors. On September 4, local media
reported that the Mojhaye Khorushan water park in Mashhad has been shut
down for allowing women entry without a headscarf. Mohammad Babaei, the
complex manager, was quoted as saying that the authorities had declared
the park's closure due to people's <ignoring chastity and hjiab>
rules.>>

<<Azam Gholami Zahab condemned to 16 years in jail
Azam Gholami Zahab is charged with being in contact with the opposition
People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran. The 5th Branch of the
Revolutionary Court of Mashhad condemned Azam Gholami Zahab to 16 years
and 4 months in prison. The verdict was issued on Monday, September 4,
2023, by Judge Hossein Yazdankhah. Ms. Gholami's trial was held on
August 23, 2023, but her lawyer of choice was not allowed to attend the
court session. The charges leveled against Azam Gholami Zahab include
<assembly and collusion to disrupt national security,> <propaganda
against the state,> <arson,> and <being in contact with the People's
Mojahedin Organization of Iran.> If the verdict is upheld, Azam Gholami
Zahab will serve 10 years in prison as the maximum punishment for
Moharebeh (waging war on God) through membership in the PMOI/MEK.
Political prisoner Azam Gholami Zahab, 35, has languished in confinement
for over 10 months. Security forces arrested her in front of her Qasem
Abad residence in Mashhad during the height of the nationwide protests
in October 2022. Her home was subjected to a search, and several
personal possessions were confiscated. She was subsequently taken to the
detention center of the Intelligence Department of Mashhad. Following a
period of relentless interrogation that spanned more than two months,
she was transferred to the Ministry of Intelligence Ward within the
Central Prison of Mashhad, also known as Vakilabad Prison. Azam Gholami
Zahab is detained in Ward 5 of the Central Prison of Mashhad (aka
Vakilabad Prison) among ordinary prisoners and violent criminals, in
violation of the principle of separation of crimes. She is constantly
mistreated, harassed, and pressured by prison authorities and the

<<The Big Purge: Another University Professor Sacked in Iran
Behrooz Chamanara, a faculty member of Kurdistan University's Department
of Kurdish Language and Literature, says he has been dismissed.
Chamanara, who was arrested during nationwide protests in December, said
he was informed of his dismissal via a phone call. The authorities are
increasingly purging the ranks of university professors as the first
anniversary of nationwide protests approaches. According to Iran's
student union councils, the Ministry of Science has begun recruiting
supporters of the Islamic Republic as professors and assistant
professors. Amir Hossein Sabeti and Abbas Mozon, two state TV
presenters, were appointed as professors at Sharif University following
the sacking of Ali Sharifi Zarchi, a respected professor in the Computer
Faculty. The student union councils also reported that after the
dismissal of Hossein Mesbahian, a prominent philosophy professor,
Mahmoud Khatami, a philosophy professor accused of plagiarism, was
invited to join Tehran University. According to the Etemad newspaper, as
many as 157 university professors were fired from their positions during
the presidencies of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Hassan Rouhani and Ebrahim
Raisi. Fifty-eight of them were dismissed in the first two years of
Raisi's administration. The Union of Iranian University Professors has
condemned the dismissals, warning that disrespecting the dignity of
professors and compromising university independence would inflict

<<Mother of Victim of Iran Protest Crackdown Arrested
The Islamic Republic's authorities have arrested the mother of a
21-year-old Iranian man killed by security forces during last year's
anti-establishment protests. Farzaneh Barzekar, the mother of Erfan
Rezaei, was arrested on September 3 after attending a memorial ceremony
for Javad Rouhi, a protester who recently died in prison. Barzekar has
been a vocal critic of the government since her son lost his life during
protests in the northern city of Amol on September 21. She has been
prevented from visiting his gravesite and threatened by security forces.
Her arrest comes amid an intensifying crackdown on dissent in Iran ahead
of next month's anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death in police custody,
with dozens of journalists, activists and lawyers being arrested in
recent months. Amnesty International has condemned the Iranian
government's treatment of the families of protest victims, calling it a
<campaign of intimidation.> In a report published on August 21, the

families from 10 provinces across the country who have been subjected to

<<Mateen Naderkhani: The 20-Year-Old Football Player Killed by Two Shots
Mateen Naderkhani was a 20-year-old man who had two deep passions:
football and music.
This guitar player and member of Gilan province's Damash FC team was
apprehended by security forces during the nationwide protests last
September in Tehran. Subsequently, he endured two months of
interrogation in a security detention center. Following his release,
which was contingent upon a pledge not to participate in further
protests, he continued his activism against the Islamic Republic. A
source close to the Naderkhani family told IranWire that the young man
stood alongside the families of victims of the brutal crackdown on the
nationwide protests that swept Iran last year and attended memorial
services for those who lost their lives.
<Two Gunshot Wounds to the Head>
On May 16, Naderkhani was at home when he received a phone call from a
friend who had an argument with his parents, the source said. At around
noon, Naderkhani went out with his friend with his guitar in tow.
Naderkhani returned home at around 6 p.m., changed his attire, grabbed
his guitar, and informed his family he would be visiting a friend's
house. At around 11:30 p.m., his mother began to worry and asked her
younger daughter to call him. Naderkhani said he would soon be back
home. One hour later, as there was still no word from Naderkhani, his
anxious mother called him again, but his phone remained unanswered. The
family also tried to contact his friends, without success. By 3 a.m. the
family received a call from police who announced he had been arrested
along with a friend. The parents were instructed to visit the Arg Square
police station in the morning. At the police station, the officers did
not provide them any information about their son and told them to come
back during office hours. When they did, the mother and father were
directed to a morgue to identify their son's body. According to the
death certificate, Naderkhani had <cerebral hemorrhage and crushing of
brain tissue> caused by <two gunshot wounds to the head.>
The Shadow of Threats Looming Over the Family for Disclosure
Ahead of the first anniversary of the nationwide demonstrations,
security forces arrested a number of relatives of victims of the
clampdown on the protests. Some have been threatened to remain silent
about their loved ones. Over the past year, Naderkhani's family has
faced various levels of threats. <Some time ago, Mateen's father was
summoned to the Arg Square police, and upon his arrival he was coerced
into making a commitment. He was pressured to pledge that no ceremonies,
memorials or commemorations would take place in Mateen's name,> the
source said. <He was instructed to inform anyone inquiring about
Mateen's death that it was an accident, despite the fact that he had
succumbed to two close-range gunshot wounds.>
The young man was killed just a few days after turning 20.
A guitar has been etched on his grave, accompanied by the lyrics of a
song by Shadmehr Aghili.>>

<<Ghazal Rasouli: There is still a long way to go
News Center- The uprising that started in Iran and Rojhelat following
the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini by Iran's so-called <morality police>
continues. Ahead of the one-year anniversary of the 'Jin, Jiyan, Azadi
(English: Women, Life, Freedom)' uprising, NuJINHA spoke to feminist
Ghazal Rasouli about the uprising and the role of women in the uprising.
'The uprising has changed many things'
Ghazal Rasouli indicated that the uprising has changed many things,
noting that there is still a long way to go. <I think many things have
changed in the last year but I cannot say that situation is an ideal
situation. After the spark of the 'Jin, Jiyan, Azadi' uprising, people
began to share the successes of this uprising and the crackdown on
people on social media platforms. We still have a long way to go in
order to get our equal rights back.>
'Ethnic groups face double crackdown'
Speaking about the crackdown and discrimination imposed against people
by the Iranian regime, she said, <There are differences between
crackdown and discrimination. People from different ethnic groups,
religions, gender and identity face double crackdown and discrimination.
For instance, all people suffer from the economic crisis; however,
Kurdish women and women from the Baha'i faith suffer from the economic
crisis while facing oppression. I mean people across Iran are suffering
from an economic crisis; however, the situation in Sistan and
Baluchestan is more serious.>
'All women face discrimination'
Ghazal Rasouli thinks women from all nations and religions face
discrimination in Iran. <We were hopeful that change would happen;
however, we have lost our hope. I think we should struggle more to be
hopeful again because change is possible. We just need unity. For
several years, women from different nations and religions such as
Kurdish, Baloch and Turkish women, have been more active and they have
managed to build a good space for themselves. I think we still have a
long way to go to ensure equality. The discrimination faced by women
from different nations and religions is similar. If we, as women, unite
and form our coalition, we will achieve success in ensuring equality and
freedom.> >>

<<Fatemeh Bagherzadeh
Fatemeh Bagherzadeh, A Lifelong Champion of Iran's Freedom
Fatemeh Bagherzadeh, a member of the PMOI's Central Council, passed away
at a hospital in Germany on September 1, 2023. Born in 1947 in Mashhad,
she was affectionately known as Nosrat. She was a humble and selfless
woman who dedicated her life and resources to the cause of Iran's
freedom. In the early years of the mullahs' rise to power in Iran,
Fatemeh joined the Association of Muslim Mothers, an organization that
supported the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). Her
commitment to the cause led her to become a member of the National
Liberation Army of Iran in 1986. She actively participated in NLA
operations in July 1988, known as the <Eternal Light> operation, and in
April 1991 during the <Pearl Operation.> Tragically, Fatemeh Bagherzadeh
suffered the loss of three siblings during her tireless struggle against
the oppressive regime of the mullahs. Her brother, Qassem Bagherzadeh,
and sister-in-law, Pari Yousefi, fell victim to the regime's IRGC during
a raid on their home in Tehran on May 2, 1982. Another brother, Kazem
Bagherzadeh, met his fate during the <Eternal Light> operation in July
1988. Additionally, Mohammad Bagherzadeh was arrested in Tehran in May
1985 and subsequently executed. NCRI President-elect Maryam Rajavi
expressed her condolences on the passing of Fatemeh Bagherzadeh (Nosrat)
to her children, the PMOI members and Central Council in Ashraf-3,
Albania, as well as to her fellow citizens in Mashhad, Iran. Mrs. Rajavi
praised Fatemeh Bagherzadeh as a shining example of the selflessness
exhibited by PMOI women, who devoted everything they had to the cause of
Iran's freedom and remained steadfast in their commitments until their
