Reserve teachers protest
NCRI - Womens committee -17 Jan 2024 - in Women's News
<<Reserve Teachers Rally for Fair Treatment and Job Security in Tehran
Amidst escalating economic hardships, reserve teachers in Tehran took to
the streets to voice their grievances, demanding equitable treatment and
improved working conditions, on January 17, 2024. Convening in front of
the education ministry, reserve teachers fervently expressed their
dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to disburse their salaries
and the absence of job security. Despite dedicating more than a decade
to educating the nation's youth, these educators find themselves devoid
of fundamental employment rights and a stable job status. The
demonstration aimed to bring attention to their predicament,
underscoring the necessity for a definitive contractual status to ensure
stability in their professional lives.
Reserve teachers' rally in Tehran
The protest transcended to the health ministry, where reserve teachers
continued to voice their concerns. The demonstration spotlighted the
challenges encountered by these educators, pivotal contributors to the
education system who grapple for acknowledgment and fair treatment. On
January 16, 2024, in Hamedan, western Iran, retired government
employees, including many women, congregated outside the government
retirement fund office, underscoring their entitlement to augmented
pensions in accordance with the nation's laws. Despite regulations
mandating adjustments to pensions in alignment with the cost of living,
the government has declined to enact these changes, resulting in growing
dissatisfaction among retirees.>>

<<Trial Opens over Killing of Top Iranian Film Director and Wife
Four individuals accused of involvement in the killing of renowned
Iranian cinematographer Dariush Mehrjui and his wife Vahideh
Mohammadifar went on trial on January 17. The session at the First
Branch of Alborz Criminal Court was open to the public, but journalists
were not allowed to attend.
Manoush Manouchehri, the lawyer of Mehrjui's family, reportedly
requested the death penalty for all defendants. However, she highlighted
multiple deficiencies in the probe and called for further investigation
of the case. The prosecutor's representative replied that the
investigation is complete and that all claimed deficiencies have been
addressed. Mehrjui and Mohammadifar were stabbed to death at their Karaj
villa, near Tehran, on the evening of October 14, 2023. In November last
year, the chief justice of Alborz province announced the indictment of
the four suspects, stating that they were motivated by <revenge due to
personal enmity and differences,> as well as <theft.> Mohammadifar's
brother Akbar strongly disagreed with this narrative, characterizing the
killings as a <premeditated and sophisticated act of intimidation.> He
claimed that the accused acted <under the orders of another individual
or individuals.> The Etemad newspaper has reported that the main
suspects in the case included teenagers as young as 14 and 15.>>

injured three others on Tuesday.
News Center- Two children were killed and three girls were injured in
the IRGC attacks on Balochistan, Pakistan, on Tuesday. According to the
local reports, the killed children were aged four and two. Pakistan on
Tuesday strongly condemned the Iranian airstrikes inside its borders,
calling it an <unprovoked violation of its airspace> and warning of
retaliation. Iran's state media reported that Iran had used precision
missile and drone strikes to destroy two strongholds of the Sunni
militant group Jaish al-Adl, known in Iran as Jaish al-Dhulm, in the
Koh-e-Sabz area of Pakistan's southwest Balochistan province. According
to Pakistan's press outlets, Pakistan had summoned Tehran's top diplomat

<<Iranian Lawyer Banned from Practicing Law - On Top of Prison Term
Khosro Alikordi, a prominent Iranian lawyer who has represented
political prisoners and their families, has been banned from practicing
law for two years, amid a crackdown on legal advocacy in the country.
Writing on his social media account on January 16, Alikordi said that
the ban was decided by the Khorasan Bar Association's disciplinary
court. In December last year, the Mashhad Revolutionary Court sentenced
Alikordi to one year in prison and two years in exile. Alikordi said
these punishments stem from his public statements about his clients'
cases, including Fatemeh Sepehri and the family of Abolfazl Adinezadeh.
Following the eruption of nationwide protests in September 2022, dozens
of lawyers representing activists and detainees have faced arrests,
summons and disbarment proceedings.>>

<<Threats against Iranian Families of Kurdish Prisoners on Death Row
The families of four Iranian Kurdish political prisoners who have been
condemned to death on charges of <collaboration with Israel> have been
threatened by Iranian security institutions for seeking information
about their fate or whereabouts. Mohsen Mazloum, Pezhman Fatehi, Vafa
Azarbar and Mohammad (Hajir) Faramarzi are members of the Komala Party
of Iranian Kurdistan. The four men aged in their 20s were arrested in
West Azerbaijan province in July 2022 <while trying to carry out an
explosion in Isfahan's industrial facilities,> state media reported the
following month.
The accusations were rejected by the families and Komala as groundless.
Earlier in January, it was reported that their death sentences had been
upheld by the Supreme Court, and they are now at grave risk of arbitrary
execution following a grossly unfair trial marred by allegations of
torture and other ill-treatment. According to information obtained by
IranWire, their relatives have had no information about the prisoners
since their arrest, and their repeated pleas to have face-to-face
meetings with them have been left unanswered. <I cannot explain my
current condition and now is not the time to succumb to despair,>
Mazloum's wife, Joana Tamisi, told IranWire. <We must amplify the voices
of my husband and his innocent friends as much as possible.> According
to Tamisi, the mothers and fathers of the political prisoners traveled
from the cities of Mahabad, Kamyaran, Dehgolan and Bukan, in West
Azerbaijan and Kurdistan provinces, to Tehran to demand a meeting with
their loved ones, prevent the execution of their sentences and a fair
retrial. On January 14, the parents gathered outside Evin prison, where
the four political prisoners are held, and security forces surrounded
them in an attempt to intimidate them. The houses where they were
staying were also surrounded by security agents. Tamisi recounted
another incident where two mothers were promised a meeting with their
sons in Evin prison, only to be threatened upon entering the facility.
They were told that their sons were absent and that their presence in
the prison would make their situation worse. In Mahabad, Tamisi's
brother-in-law was summoned by the Intelligence Department and told to
bring the family back from Tehran or <they will be sentenced to death
too.>
Regarding the judicial process, Tamisi said that the family lawyer,
Masoud Shamsnejad, has not been granted access to the case documents.
Shamsnejad has rejected the death sentence imposed on his client as
unfair and unjust. The charges against the four convicts remain unclear.
Tamisi emphasized the psychological distress in the families,
particularly on Fatehi's five-year-old son. <The innocence of a child
confronted with the concept of execution and the death penalty made his
mental state unstable,> she said. Tamisi mentioned that forced
<confessions> from her husband and his friends were broadcast on state
TV twice in the initial months after their arrest. After the death
sentences were confirmed, these <confessions> were aired again, further
increasing the families' fear of their imminent execution.>>

<<Two Baha'is in Shiraz Summoned to Prison
Two Baha'i citizens, Mina Karami and Soroush Iqani, face imminent
imprisonment as the Iranian government escalates its crackdown on the
religious minority. According to HRANA human rights website, on January
15 Mina Karami, a Baha'i citizen in Shiraz, received a summons from
Branch 1 of the General and Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office in the
city. The summons instructed Karami to appear before judicial
authorities on February 1 to start a five-year prison sentence she had
received during a previous trial. In September 2022, Karami was
convicted by Branch 1 of the Shiraz Revolutionary Court on charges of
<deviant educational and propaganda activities contrary to Islamic
Sharia law.> The sentence included five years of imprisonment, denial of
social rights for 10 years, and a two-year prohibition on leaving the
country. The verdict was later upheld by the Branch 37 of the Court of
Appeal in Fars province. Meanwhile, Soroush Iqani, another Baha'i
citizen in Shiraz, was arrested to serve a six-month sentence. He was
arrested on January 14 and subsequently transferred to Adel Abad prison
in Shiraz. Last year, Soroush Iqani was sentenced to two years in prison

<<Iranian Police Official Has Death Sentence Overturned
Iran's Supreme Court has overturned the death sentence imposed on a
police officer accused of killing a protester during the 2022 uprising.
Mehran Samak was fatally shot in the head in Bandar Anzali on the
evening of November 29, 2022, amid protests that followed the match
between the US and Iranian national football teams in the World Cup in
Qatar. The lawyer for Samak's family identified the perpetrator of the
killing as Jafar Javanmardi, the then-commander of the police force in
Anzali Bandar. Javanmardi was arrested in December 2022, and a court
later sentenced the officer to death. However, on January 15, the
Judiciary's Information Center announced that the Supreme Court had
overturned the decision following objections raised by the defendant and
his lawyer. The case was sent back to court for a new trial. Iranian
authorities cracked down hard on the monthslong protests that erupted in
September 2022. More than 500 people were killed and over 22,000 others
were unlawfully detained in the clampdown, activists say. Following
biased trials, the judiciary handed down stiff sentences, including the
death penalty, to protesters. At least eight of them have been executed
so far.>>

<<Air Pollution Behind Nearly 14 Percent of Natural Deaths in Iran
Iran's Ministry of Health has attributed a staggering 13.9 percent of
all natural deaths in the country to air pollution. <Tehran ranks 19th
among the world's worst capitals in terms of concentration of suspended
particles,> Abbas Shahsavani, who heads the ministry's air health and
climate change group, told Tasnim news agency on January 16. According
to him, the average concentration of suspended particles in Iran is <7.6
times higher> than the World Health Organization's guideline and <more
than three times the national standard.> The official said that Tehran
experienced in 2023 as many as 107 days of <unhealthy> air for sensitive
populations and 36 days of <unhealthy air for all groups.> Decades of
misguided environmental policies have contributed to the air-pollution
crisis in Iran. Recently, Iranians took to the streets of multiple
Iranian cities to protest the use of mazut, a low-quality heavy fuel
oil, in power plants and other factories, especially when natural gas
shortages hit during the hard winter months.>>

Musa Asef-Al-Hosseini, as ruling that both women were guilty of
<inciting people to violence, engaging in propaganda against the regime,
insulting the supreme leader (Ali Khamenei), and forming groups to act

Vahid Chavaran, a Kurdish political prisoner hailing from Abdanan in
Ilam province and detained during the Jin, Jiyan, Azadi movement,
attempted suicide as a form of protest against a twelve-year
imprisonment sentence imposed by the judicial system of the Islamic
Republic of Iran. According to a report received by Hengaw Organization
for Human Rights on Monday, January 15, 2024, Vahid Chavaran committed
suicide within the central prison of Ilam, expressing his protest
against the 12-year imprisonment and subsequent exile to Zahedan. An

Earlier, on Monday, January 8, 2024, Vahid Chavaran received a
twelve-year imprisonment sentence and was ordered into exile to Zahedan
