<<Iran’s Top Sunni Cleric Urges Restraint Amid Pakistan Standoff
Iran's most prominent Sunni cleric used his Friday prayer sermon on
January 19 to denounce the recent exchange of airstrikes between Iran
and Pakistan and to call on the two neighbors to prioritize diplomacy
over the use of force. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)
carried out a missile and drone attack on what it called <terrorist>
targets in Pakistan late on January 16, with Pakistan in turn striking
separatist militant targets inside Iran on January 18. The tit-for-tat
military actions in the border region of Baluchistan, shared between the
two countries, has further stoked regional tensions already inflamed by
the Israel-Hamas war. Molavi Abdulhamid, the Sunni Friday prayer leader
of Zahedan, the capital of Iran's Sistan and Baluchistan province,
deplored the loss of innocent lives in the Pakistani airstrikes and
warned that an escalating conflict could trigger a regional
conflagration. The cleric, who has been a key dissenting voice inside
Iran since the eruption of nationwide anti-establishment protests in
September 2022, emphasized the historical bonds between the two
countries' populations. Acknowledging the presence of dissident groups
on both sides of the border, Molavi urged both governments to address
underlying grievances and foster a peaceful resolution to the standoff.
Videos circulating online show Zahedan residents chanting
anti-government slogans after Friday prayers, and expressing outrage at
the loss of civilian lives in the Pakistani airstrikes.>>

Golaleh Vatandoust
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 19 Jan 2024
<<Kurdish Lawyer Golaleh Vatandoost Sentenced to 6 Years and 7 Months in
Prison
Renowned Kurdish lawyer and women's rights activist Golaleh Vatandoost
has been sentenced to 6 years, 7 months, and 20 days in prison by the
judicial system of the Islamic Republic of Iran. She was arrested during
the Jin, Jiyan, Azadi movement. According to a report obtained by the
Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Golaleh Vatandoost, a prominent
lawyer in Marivan, faced charges such as <propaganda against the
regime,> <action against national security,> and <membership in
opposition groups.> The 1st branch of the Sanandaj Revolutionary Court
handed down the sentence. Her court session, held at the end of
September last year, resulted in the aforementioned prison term. The
sentence has been referred to the Court of Appeal of Kurdistan
(Sanandaj) Province for review. Golaleh Vatandoost was arrested on
October 3, 2022, during the Jin, Jiyan, Azadi movement by security
agencies in Sanandaj city. After some time, she was released on bail. It
is noteworthy that Golaleh Vatandoost has faced numerous summonses,
interrogations, and threats from security agencies in recent years. As a
lawyer and activist, she has been actively engaged in promoting women's
and children's rights, contributing valuable materials in these
fields.>>

Opinion by G. d'A.: I said it before: Since our dear Iranian-Kurdish
sister Jina Amini post-mortem (read murdered by a basij for apparently
not wearing her hijab correctly) received the European Sakharov prize
2023 it cannot be a coincidence that also and especially Kurdish
dissents are hunted down including her parents, other family members and
friends.

<<Exiled Iranian Football Star Faces Renewed Threats
In the past two weeks, two senior Iranian government officials have
issued explicit death and kidnapping threats against the exiled football
legend Ali Karimi. Karimi left Iran in the fall of 2022 after receiving
multiple threats from the authorities. During the 2022 uprising, the
retired football player used his notoriety to defend the protesters who
faced a bloody crackdown by security forces. And following a deadly twin
bombing in the Iranian city of Kerman earlier this month, Karimi
criticized the Islamic Republic's policy of offering food and drink at
pro-government events. <Go for free food and drink, but you will get a
hard revenge,> he wrote on the social media platform X. In response,
Reza Naqipour, head of the Office of Ceremonies at the Iranian
presidential office and former chief of security at the football
federation, wrote on his Instagram account on January 5: <One day you
will return the way that we like, not the way you like.> Naqipour used
the hashtag #RouhollahZam, suggesting a fate similar to Ruhullah Zam, a
journalist who was kidnapped in Iraq in 2019 and forcibly returned to
Iran where he was executed the following year. Asked in a January 17
press conference about an ongoing investigation into Karimi's
activities, Vice President Mohammad Dehghan warned: <All individuals who
have left the country remain Iranian nationals.> <Any individual who
takes actions against the national security of the country will face
consequences. Relevant authorities will take timely measures in this
regard,> Dehghan added. Naqipour attracted media attention in September
2023, when he assaulted and threatened a correspondent for the
London-based Iran International news channel who was capturing footage
of the Iranian delegation accompanying President Ebrahim Raisi in New
York. A video posted online showed the official telling the journalist,
Kian Amani, <I really like that your hand is trembling. You'll all be
trembling like this for the rest of your life. All the enemies of the
Islamic Republic of Iran must tremble....we are the main player in the
region.> Efforts to bring Karimi back to Iran have apparently been
underway for some time. In September 2022, the semi-official Fars News
Agency shared a picture purporting to be an Interpol red notice for
Karimi, which could not be verified. In a subsequent interview, Karimi
disclosed he had faced threats in the United Arab Emirates from the
Iranian security authorities.>>

<<Alarm Raised over Imminent Execution of at least 12 Prisoners in Iran
At least 12 political and ideological prisoners are at imminent risk of
execution in Iran, according to the activist HRANA news agency, amid a
spike in executions in the country. HRANA said on January 18 that eight
of the death sentences were delivered by Branch 26 and Branch 28 of the
Tehran Revolutionary Court, headed by Judges Iman Afshari and Mohammad
Moqiseh, respectively. Judge Afshari has a history of sentencing
protesters and other political prisoners to death. None of the
defendants had access to legal representation during their trials,
according to HRANA. Lack of due process and use of vague charges like
<waging war against God,> <corruption on Earth,> <membership in
opposition parties,> and <cooperation with foreign countries> raise
serious questions about the legitimacy of the convictions. At least 791
individuals were executed across Iran last year, marking a 33 percent
increase from the previous year, according to the Norway-based Iran
Human Rights (IHRNGO) group.>>
