Varisha Moradi
<<Political prisoner Varisha Moradi held in state of limbo after 250
days of detention
More than 250 days since the arrest of political prisoner Varisha Moradi,
she is still being held in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison in a state of
limbo.
Varisha Moradi was summoned to court after more than eight months of
detention. On April 9, she appeared at the 15th branch of the Tehran
Revolutionary Court, but due to lack of counsel, the hearing on her
charges was not held. Ms. Moradi was also not allowed to meet with her
lawyer before the trial as planned. It is not clear when the next court
session will be held. Varisha Moradi was arrested on August 1, 2023, by
security forces in the outskirts of Sanandaj, western Iran. She was
transferred from the Sanandaj Intelligence Department detention center
to Section 209 of Evin Prison by the end of August. On December 26,
2023, after the interrogation process was completed, Moradi was
transferred to Evin Prison's women's ward. Varisha Moradi, who is
originally from Sanandaj, was charged in January by the Fifth
Investigative Branch of the Tehran Public Prosecutor's Office. Her case
was then referred to the 15th Branch of the Tehran Revolutionary Court
on charges of <armed rebellion> for membership in an opposition group.
According to reports, Varisha spent the first five months of her
imprisonment in solitary confinement in the detention center of the
Intelligence Department in Sanandaj and in Ward 209 in Evin Prison,
where she was severely tortured to make false confessions against
herself.>>

Shaker Behrouz
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 17 April 2024
<<Urmia, Iran : Kurdish Political Prisoner Initiates Hunger Strike
Shaker Behrouz, a Kurdish political detainee from Urmia, has commenced a
hunger strike in protest against his prolonged, unjust detention at
Urmia Central Prison, despite the fact that his sentence has ended. He
has spent 5 years, 1 month, and 7 days incarcerated without the
opportunity for furlough. During this time, he has faced two death
sentences, both of which were overturned. According to a report obtained
by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Shaker Behrouz, a political
prisoner from 'Dizaj Margavar' in Urmia, began his hunger strike on
Sunday, April 13, 2024. Today marks the fourth day of his strike.
Despite his sentence ending last month, Shaker Behrouz remains detained
under unclear circumstances by the Urmia Court's enforcement branch,
citing ongoing case review. Shaker Behrouz was initially sentenced to
death in August 2020 by the Second Branch of the Urmia Revolutionary
Court, under Judge Sheikhlou's jurisdiction, on charges of <rebellion>
and <Komala Party membership.> This charge was rendered while he was
previously affiliated with the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan,
for which he had received a 5-year prison sentence by the same court.
Eventually, the death sentence was overturned by the First Branch of the
Iranian Supreme Court. A resident of 'Dizaj Margavar,' Shaker Behrouz
had been a member of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan for 7
months before returning to Iran. He was apprehended by Urmia
intelligence forces on Wednesday, March 12, 2019. After spending over a
year at the department’s detention center, he was transferred to Urmia
Central Prison in spring 2022. In December 2020, the First Branch of the
Special Criminal Court for Juveniles in Urmia sentenced Shaker Behrouz
to death for the alleged murder of a Revolutionary Guards member. This
sentence was upheld by the 31st Branch of the Supreme Court in Qom last
year. The case was closed with the consent of the plaintiff's family on
June 30, 2022. Nevertheless, Shaker Behrouz was returned to Urmia
Central Prison's political ward, where he was placed in solitary
confinement in anticipation of execution.>>

<<Grieving Father Seeks Justice for Son's State-Sponsored Killing,
Convicted by Iranian Judiciary
Kamal Lotfi, a member of the <Greiving> families and the father of Reza
Lotfi, a victim of state-sponsored killing during the 'Women, Life,
Freedom' movement, was recently detained for the second time and has
been sentenced to five years in prison by the judicial system of the
Islamic Republic of Iran. According to reports received by the Hengaw
Organization for Human Rights, Kamal Lotfi, a member of the <Greiving>
families, was sentenced by the Revolutionary Court in Dehgolan,
Kurdistan (Sanandaj) province, to one year of imprisonment for
<anti-regime propaganda,> two years for <insulting the Supreme Leader,>
and two years for <insulting the founder of the Islamic Republic
(Khomeini),> totaling five years of imprisonment.
By invoking Article 510 of the Criminal Procedure Code (consolidation of
sentences), the most severe sentence, which is two years of
imprisonment, will be imposed. Hengaw had previously reported that Kamal
Lotfi, a 46-year-old resident of Dehgolan and the father of Reza Lotfi,
one of the victims killed by Iranian government forces, was detained on
Tuesday, April 9, 2024, after being summoned to the Revolutionary Court
in Qorveh. As of this moment, there are no details regarding his
whereabouts or detention conditions. Reza Lotfi, a 19-year-old resident
of Dehgolan, was shot directly and killed instantly by Iranian
government special forces during the 'Jin, Jian, Azadi' movement on
Monday, September 19, 2022. Hengaw had previously emphasized that Kamal
Lotfi has always been under pressure from government authorities since
the killing of his son. In response to government claims that his son
was killed by <the opposition,> Mr. Lotfi released a video rejecting
these claims and stating that his son was killed by government forces.
It is worth noting that Kamal Lotfi was previously detained on Sunday,
April 16, 2023, on the streets of Dehgolan without any legal documents
presented by security forces. After spending 78 days in detention, he
was temporarily released on Monday, July 3, 2023, upon posting bail
until the end of the judicial proceedings. Kamal Lotfi developed a skin
disease in Kamyaran Prison and went on multiple hunger strikes to
protest the authorities’ denial of his requests for medical attention.>>
