<<An Iranian Teacher's Ordeal in Karaj’s Ghezelhesar Prison
Jafar Ebrahimi, a dedicated teacher and member of the Iranian
Teachers' Union, was transferred on September 3 from Tehran’s Evin
prison to Ghezelhesar prison in Karaj, near Tehran, alongside several
other political prisoners. Prior to this transfer, he was suffering
multiple ailments that posed a significant threat to his health. This
report sheds light on the plight of this activist and the other
prisoners who are enduring dire conditions in Ghezelhesar prison.
***
<Jafar Ebrahimi is not only a union activist but also an educator
with over 20 years of teaching experience,<teachers' union activist
Shiva Ameli-Rad told IranWire. “He dedicated his time working in the
marginalized areas of southern Tehran. Among his students, there were
many Afghan immigrants and individuals who had relocated to the
outskirts of Tehran due to unemployment crises and environmental issues
in other provinces.> <As a teacher, he had a profound connection with
these immigrant children and was an advocate for children's rights. He
was an active member of the Yari Association, which supported children
unable to attend school for various reasons," Ameli-Rad added. After
Ebrahimi's arrest on April 30, 2022, he endured prolonged periods of
solitary confinement before being transferred to the general ward of
Evin prison, according to the activist. During this time, Ebrahimi's
health deteriorated significantly. And over the past few months, he has
not received any effective medical treatment.
According to medics, he requires specialized care, including
daily tests.
Ebrahimi was transferred to a hospital last year due to his
deteriorating health but was returned to prison after two days,
Ameli-Rad said. She
explained that Ebrahimi has been grappling with digestive issues
since 2009 - problems that likely exacerbated in prison due to stress
and inadequate nutrition. <Jafar Ebrahimi has regularly visited the
prison's health center, where the doctor prescribed medication that
severely compromised his immune system. As a result, his body has become
vulnerable to other illnesses,> Ameli-Rad said. In recent months,
Ebrahimi has been diagnosed with high blood sugar and diabetes, and his
vision has significantly deteriorated.
Transfer to Qezelhesar Prison: A Gruesome Ordeal
Two weeks ago, Ebrahimi and other prisoners refused to use Ward
4's telephone for three consecutive days to protest the exorbitant
costs, surveillance and frequent call disconnections. <During those
three days, Jafar lost consciousness due to his declining health and had
to receive treatment. His forensic report explicitly mentions that he
cannot endure further punishment due to the progression of his illness
and that he should be granted the right to medical leave and treatment,>
Ameli-Rad said. In Ghezelhesar prison, the inmates were accommodated in
cramped cells housing up to four men each. Initially, they did not
receive meals from the prison. However, on the second day, some Sunni
prisoners on death row offered them food items such as biscuits, cakes
and cheese. <Over the past three days, they have not received these
supplies and resorted to a hunger strike. This is not a hunger strike
they decided upon arbitrarily,> Ameli-Rad said. <Aside from the lack of
access to food and telephones, they are also devoid of proper sleeping
accommodations. Their cells are extremely small, and they would prefer
to return to Evin's solitary cells 240 and 209,> she continued.>>

<<Housewife Denied Needed Medicine at Isfahan Prison
Masoumeh Yavari, 45-year-old housewife and mother of two, has
been in custody since September 5, when 24 plainclothes officers stormed
her home to arrest her. The officers accused Yavari of <supporting
hostile organizations,> <propaganda> and <destroying and setting fire to
public property> - charges her family denies. Yavari's health is gravely
concerning, and the interrogators and officials at Isfahan's Dolat Abad
prison, where she is being held, are hindering access to medications in
an attempt to force her into making confessions. <Her family was truly
taken aback,> a source told IranWire. <This woman is a housewife, and
she underwent spinal disc surgery two years ago. Her physical condition
is so delicate that she cannot even sit for a long time.> Yavari was
first arrested during protests that followed the disputed 2009
presidential election. Her children were minors at the time. During her
incarceration, <electric baton strikes to her neck inflicted by prison
guards> caused a lumbar disc injury. Following her latest arrest,
Yavari's family remained unaware of her whereabouts for three days. On
the third day, she made a call from Dowlat Abad prison saying she had
been kept in solitary confinement and had not met with her
interrogators. She also informed her family that her painkillers had run
out. When her family attempted to deliver her medicines, the
Intelligence Protection unit refused to accept them.>>

<<For the Incarcerated Parents
Iranian security forces detained a three-year-old girl along with
her mother during a raid at their home on August 16. The toddler, named
Afra, remained in custody with her mother Narges Sardari for several
hours until her grandmother was summoned at the prosecutor's office.
Afra's father, theater actor Mehdi Etemad Saeed, has been languishing
behind bars since June. Flagging concerns over her husband's whereabouts
and the suffering of her daughter, Sardari had taken to Instagram to
demand his release. Sardari revealed that two weeks after the arrest of
her husband, security agents searched their home and confiscated her
mobile phone. Later, she was allowed to talk to him over the phone for
<one minute.> <They didn't even allow me to hear his voice. They
insisted on handing the phone to Afra so that Mehdi could speak. I do
not know how long I need to plead for Afra to hear Mahdi's voice once
again,> she wrote. Etemad Saeed was arrested in front of her daughter on
June 9.The actor was apprehended by plainclothes men in Tehran's Laleh
Park during a play therapy session with a group of children.>>

<<Jailed Iranian Women Activist Ends Hunger Strike after Two
Weeks
Iranian political prisoner and civil activist Bahare Hedayat
announced on September 13 the end of her hunger strike after 14 days. <I
will end my strike, but not my commitment [which will endure] until the
day when the Islamic Republic, this anti-freedom government, is removed
from the soil of Iran,> she wrote in a statement from Tehran's Evin
prison. Hedayat is a well-known human rights activist in Iran who has
been arrested and imprisoned several times for her activism. She is
currently serving a four-year and eight-month sentence for participating
in protests after the Islamic Republic Guard Corps (IRGC) shot down a
Ukrainian airliner in January 2020. The activist was moved to hospital
on September 13 after launching a hunger strike on August 31 to protest
the death of Javad Rouhi, a man who was detained during the recent
nationwide protests and died under suspicious circumstances while in
prison. Rouhi's family, fellow political prisoners and activists urged
Hedayat to end her protest action, fearing for her life. In her
statement, Hedayat explained that she went on hunger strike <to remember
the endless resistance in the street, to remember the will, courage and
conscience that boiled in the university, and to remember the hopes that
were born> during the widespread protests sparked by Mahsa Amini’s death
in police custody on September 16, 2022.>>

<<Troops Deployed across Iran's Saqqez ahead of Mahsa Anniversary
Saqqez - A significant increase in security presence has been
witnessed in the western Iranian city of Saqqez in recent days, ahead of
the September 16 anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death. Security forces can
be seen in the main streets and squares of Amini's hometown, with
vehicles of special forces being deployed in Azadi and Republic Squares.
The Iranian authorities, fearing a flare up in protests ahead of the
anniversary of Amini's death in police custody, have ramped up security
measures in Kurdistan province, particularly Saqqez. Videos shared on
social media suggest that troops are being deployed to Saqqez and other
cities in Kurdistan. Cities in the province have experienced a
significant slowdown in internet speed in recent days, while activists
and ordinary citizens have been arrested or summoned by the authorities.
On September 13, security forces stormed the residence of civil activist
Samira Ahmadi and took her into custody without presenting a court
order.>>

<<Female prisoners call on Bahareh Hedayat to end her hunger
strike
News Center-Iranian human rights activist Bahareh Hedayat, who
has behind bars in Evin prison since October 3, 2022, started a hunger
strike on September 31 to protest the death of Javad Rouhi under
suspicious circumstances in prison and to condemn the accusations
against Iranian journalists Niloufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi. On the
13th day of her hunger strike, she was hospitalized due to her
deteriorating health condition. After an hour at the hospital, she was
sent back to Evin prison. Female political prisoners in Evin prison have
written a letter to Bahareh Hedayat. In the letter, they called on
Bahareh Hedayat to end her hunger strike to <realize our dreams of
freedom and equality in Iran together.>
The letter is a follows:
<Bahareh Hedayat, we ask you to end your hunger strike so that we
can realize our dreams together. We have been passing through an era
where the truth is turned upside down and the values that determine
politics have collapsed. In such a period, for someone who has been
making efforts for the freedom of everyone and of Iran, there may be no
choice than sacrificing her life to warn that what is being stolen is
the life of a human being and the existence and future of a country.
Bahareh Hedayat has been on a hunger strike for days in protest against
the 'deprivation of conscience' that takes lives while we, as political
prisoners held in Evin prison, witness the suffering and tension faced
by women. <We, as a group of your comrades, declare that we cannot bear
that you risk your life and health anymore. On the behalf of the mother
and father of Javad Rouhi, we ask you to end your hunger strike so that
we can realize our dreams of freedom and equality in Iran together.>

<<Şiraz Hamo: 'Jin, Jiyan, Azadi' uprising will achieve victory
Qamishlo- In an interview with NuJINHA, Şiraz Hamo, coordinating
member of the Kongra Star, talked about the 'Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (English:
Women, Life, Freedom)' uprising that started in Iran and Rojhelat
Kurdistan following the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini in Tehran on
September 16, 2022.
<The killing of Jina Mahsa Amini by Iran's so-called morality
police turned into the spark of the uprising in Iran,> she said, <This
uprising was not the result of that moment. It was an extension of the
previous uprisings that had broken out against the existing dictatorial
regime. The people of Iran and Rojhelat Kurdistan, especially women,
rose up and demanded the change of the current system. They want to
overthrow the cruel regime and change the injustice practices carried
out by the regime aiming to intimidate people.> 'People from all ages
have played their part'. Pointing out that people of all facets of life
have participated in the uprising led by women, Şiraz Hamo said, <People
from all ages have played their part with determination in the uprising
led by women to change the current regime. The slogan 'Jin, Jiyan, Azadi'
began to be chanted in the uprising to have a country based on freedom
and equality. We need Jin (Women), Jiyan, (Life) and Azadi (Freedom) to
have a life based on justice, equality, peace and democracy.>
'The effect of the revolution in Rojava has shown up itself all
around the world'
<The women of Iran, who were influenced by the revolution in
Rojava, rose up against the Iranian regime and the killing of Jina Mahsa
Amini sparked the uprising,> said Şiraz Hamo. <Women chanted the slogan
'Jin, Jiyan, Azadi' to demand freedom. Women have many achievements that
play an important role in the development of society in the 21st
century. The freedom of women means the freedom of society. The effect
of the revolution in Rojava has shown itself all around the world.
Therefore, the 'Jin, Jiyan, Azadi' slogan has been chanted by women
demanding freedom and wanting to enjoy their rights all around the
world.>
Call for unity
In her speech, Şiraz Hamo recalled how women all around the world
cut their hair and held protests to express their solidarity with
Iranian women. She also called on all women to unite against the
patriarchal mindset. <As women, we must support each other wherever we
are. We must raise our voices together against the policies implemented
against us to achieve victory by resisting and struggling. What has
happened is a good model; women have overcome all difficulties by
struggling and organizing themselves with determination and they have
achieved many gains.> Şiraz Hamo thinks that women in Iran should keep
resisting and making their voices heard all around the world. <The 'Jin,
Jiyan, Azadi' uprising will definitely achieve victory.> >>

<<Prominent Iranian Women's Rights Activist Jailed; Reason
Unknown
Atefeh Rangriz, a well-known writer and women's rights activist
in Iran, has been arrested amid an intensifying clampdown on civil
society. Rangriz conveyed the news to her family on September 10 during
a brief phone call from Semnan prison, some 200 kilometers from Tehran.
She did not provide any information about the charges against her or the
circumstances of her arrest. She had been detained several times in the
past for her activism, most recently in May 2019. Rangriz was sentenced
to 11 years and six months in prison but was later released under an
<amnesty.> The Iranian authorities, fearing a flare up in protests ahead
of the September 16 anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death in police
custody, have ramped up their crackdown on activists in recent months.
Last month, security forces arrested 12 women's rights activists in the
northern province of Gilan. The detainees were reportedly subjected to
physical abuse and denied basic rights while in detention.>>
