<<Two Teachers Arrested in Amini’s Home Town
Two teachers from Mahsa Amini's home town of Saqqez, Aziz Marzi
and Azad Amini, were arrested on Friday afternoon, just a day before the
anniversary of the young woman's death in police custody. The teachers
are members of the Kurdistan Teachers' Union. Security forces raided
their homes and took them to an undisclosed location. The arrests come
amid a growing crackdown on dissent in Iran. The government has been
targeting teachers, activists and journalists in recent months. Fearing
a flare-up of protests ahead of today's anniversary of Amini's death,
authorities ramped up security measures in Kurdistan province,
particularly Saqqez. At least 292 protesters and civil activists have
been arrested across the country in the past 50 days, according to human
rights website HRANA. It said the government has used a variety of
methods to crack down on dissent, including exerting pressure on
students, educational institutions, artists and the families of those
who lost their loved ones during the months of protests sparked by
Amini's death. Many cities in Iran have witnessed heightened security
measures in advance of the September 16 anniversary.>>

<<'The Iranian women's revolution is a renaissance that will soon reap
its fruits'
Gaza- On September 16, 2022, 22-year-old Jina Mahsa Amini was killed by
Iran's so-called <morality police> for not wearing her hijab properly in
Iran's capital Tehran. Following her killing, people, especially women,
took to the streets in the cities of Iran and Rojhelat Kurdistan by
chanting the slogan Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (Women, Life, Freedom)> In an
interview with NuJINHA, Islah Hassaneya, the feminist activist and
director of the Center for Research, Legal Consultation and Protection
for Women, commented on the <Jin, Jiyan, Azadi> uprising.
<The rights of Iranian women are violated and they suffer from male
control and deprivation of their social, economic and political rights.
We know that women led revolutions in various Arab countries, and
Iranian women have been leading the uprising because they have been
oppressed. Protests are legitimate ways to convey messages to
authoritarian regimes. Protesters must be respected and their demands
must be taken into account,> she said.
'Women are deprived of their rights'
Islah Hassaneya thinks some professions or academic specializations are
still thought of as men's jobs. She said, <This should be changed
because women have proven their capabilities in various fields such as
judiciary, engineering, nuclear sciences, and technology. In Iran, women
are always subjected to the political status of the ruler of the
country. If the president is concerned with women’s rights, women are
given the opportunities to develop themselves. The poisoning of
schoolgirls in Iran is an inhuman practice. The aim is to deprive women
and girls of all their rights and to restrict them by creating crises.>
'International conventions are not implemented'
She added, <There is a system in Iran that aims to achieve its goals by
killing girls and women. Women are oppressed in the name of the
compulsory hijab rule. The international conventions and agreements are
not implemented and this takes us back to the ancient human era in the
application of human rights. Why are women always oppressed? Is it
because they are weak, or because they are powerless and unable to
confront themselves? Or because there is no support for them to demand
their rights? We demand the international community to impose sanctions
on the Iranian regime because it does not implement the international
convention ratified by it.>
'The Iranian women's revolution is a renaissance that will soon reap its
fruits'
She recalled that some Iranian female athletes were forced to flee to
other countries when they participated in international competitions
without wearing hijabs. “If this situation continues, many women will
flee from the country. Iranian women should keep resisting because they
will definitely achieve their freedom. Women lead all movements for
freedom. International Women's Day is one of them. Now, this day is
celebrated all around the world. What brings women to decision-making
positions is their determination. The revolution led by women in Iran is
a renaissance. I believe that the Iranian women's revolution is a
renaissance that will soon reap its fruits.> >>

<<Tehran Voices <Strong Objections> to Australia Sanctions
The Iranian government says it has summoned the Australian charge
d'affaires to protest what it described as an <interventionist
statement> and a new round of sanctions against the Islamic Republic. In
a statement issued on September 13, Australia's Minister for Foreign
Affairs, the Hon Penny Wong, announced that her country was imposing
financial sanctions and travel bans on <four individuals and three
entities responsible for the oppression of people in Iran, including
women and girls.> On September 14, Iran's Foreign Ministry said it had
summoned the Australian embassy's charges d'affaires to express the
Islamic Republic's <strong objections> against <the interventionist
statement as well as the sanctions.> Australia's announcement marked the
first anniversary of Mahsa Amini's arrest in Tehran, which was followed
by her death in police custody three days later. The tragedy sparked
months of nationwide protests and a brutal state crackdown in which
hundreds of people were killed and thousands were arrested. The
individuals sanctioned by Australia include police spokesperson Saeed
Montazer Al-Mahdi, who the statement said <repeatedly made intimidating
and threatening statements towards Iranian women and girls for
purportedly violating Iran's mandatory veiling laws.> The entities
targeted include Iran's cyber police, which Australia said are <central
to obstructing freedom of expression through restricting internet
activity in Iran,> and state-owned Press TV, which has broadcast <the
forced confessions of Iranians and dual-nationals who are detained and
tried under politically motivated judicial procedures.> The European
Union, the United States, Australia and other countries have issued
several rounds of sanctions against the Islamic Republic in recent
months over its crackdown on the anti-government protests and its supply
of drones to Russia for its war effort in Ukraine.>>

<<Jailed Iranian Teacher Hospitalized in Critical State
Jafar Ebrahimi, a teacher imprisoned in Iran for more than a year, has
been urgently transferred to hospital due to his rapidly deteriorating
physical condition, the country's Teachers Union says. Ebrahimi was
arrested on April 30, 2022, and subjected to prolonged periods of
solitary confinement. On September 3, he was transferred from Tehran's
Evin prison to Ghezelhesar prison in Karaj, near the capital, alongside
several other political prisoners. Although his health deteriorated
significantly while in custody, he has not received any effective
medical treatment within the past few months. <Ebrahimi has suffered
inflammatory bowel disease....for an extended period. Since his transfer
to Evin prison in May last year, this ailment in his body has
progressively worsened to the most critical level,> his lawyer Erfan
Karam Veisi has said.>>

<<Top Iranian Officials Targeted in French Criminal Complaint
A criminal complaint was filed with Paris prosecutors on September 14
against an Iranian minister and the top commanders of the Islamic
Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its elite Quds force for <death
threats and justifying terrorism.> The case against Intelligence
Minister Esmail Khatib, IRGC commander-in-chief Hossein Salami and Quds
force head Esmail Qaani refers to public threats issued by the three men
in December and January against supporters of anti-government protests
in Iran, a lawyer for the six Iranian and Franco-Iranian plaintiffs said.
The complaint quoted Khatib as saying on December 13 that <anyone
playing a role in the riots will be punished, wherever they are in the
world.> Chirinne Ardakani, a French-Iranian lawyer from the Iran Justice
Collective, described such threats as <disguised fatwas> -- Islamic
legal decrees -- against Iranian opposition activists around the world.
The largely symbolic complaint marks the first anniversary of the death
of Mahsa Amini on September 16, 2022, which triggered months of protests
across Iran. The Islamic Republic's crackdown on the women-led protests
resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of arrests. <It's about
showing the Iranian regime, which wants to suffocate opposition, that
wherever Iranians are in the world, they will continue to make
themselves heard,> Ardakani said.>>

<<University Purge in Iran: Crisis in Higher Education
Today, we look into the sweeping dismissals of professors across at
least 150 universities and the university purge in Iran.
This situation is both timely and alarming. The expulsion of students
began several months ago, and now, in August, professors are also facing
termination. These actions coincide with the approaching first
anniversary of the nationwide uprising in 2022 and are driven by the
regime's fear of another revolt. Their goal? To quash last year’s
leaders-the students-and stifle the university, which served as a focal
point for protests. During last year's nationwide movement, universities
played a vital role in the protests. Today, numerous university students
and professors have been arrested, summoned, banned, suspended, or
terminated. In August, the pace of professor dismissals increased
significantly. They were let go for various reasons, including
retirement and academic performance. So far, we have verified the names
of over 60 dismissed professors, including a dozen women. At Tehran's
Sharif University of Technology, a student association voiced their
objection to the dismissal of a professor, noting that security measures
have intensified to the point where it feels like the university is
under the control of security agencies. They also issued a warning: <The
dismissal of professors who do not align with the government's agenda
and the security confrontations with students will not only lead to the
university community’s disillusionment with the government but also
result in a daily exodus of Iran’s intellectual elites.> In Iran, the
university has long been a symbol of freedom and a breeding ground for
progressive ideas, which has drawn the hostility of the regime since its
inception. Khomeini, the mullahs' first supreme leader, viewed academics
as products of Western education and labeled them as arrogant. In 1980,
he declared that the actions of academic institutions influenced
everything in the country. This led to a 'Cultural Revolution',
resulting in the dismantling of universities in April 1980. The
universities remained closed for three years, and tragically, 17
students lost their lives, with over 2,000 students injured. Many
students and academics were arrested, and detained, and some even faced
execution. The regime's Cultural Revolution Council purged professors
and academics, established committees for control, and introduced
measures to reshape higher education institutions according to the
ruling regime's ideology. During the first Cultural Revolution, 45% of
university admission slots were allocated to the paramilitary Basij and
the Revolutionary Guard Corps members and their families. Additionally,
a law was passed to facilitate the enrollment of Iran-Iraq war
combatants in universities, all aimed at exerting control and reshaping
the academic landscape. Today, the dismissal of professors, often
labeled as university purge has continued with professors who supported
protesting students and opposed the regime's policies being replaced by
individuals aligned with the ruling regime. The Iranian Union of
University Professors protested against these dismissals, revealing that
a resolution by the National Security Council, dated January 10, 2023,
sought the recruitment of 15,000 academic staff aligned with the
<Islamic Revolution.> A state-run newspaper expressed grave concern,
warning that welcoming 15,000 individuals into academic positions could
potentially lead to a catastrophe for higher education in Iran. This
complex history highlights the regime's persistent efforts to control
and reshape the academic landscape in Iran, suppressing voices of
dissent and progressive thought. A state-run media outlet acknowledged
the futility of the 'purification' process in universities. It stated,
<Fundamentally, the notion that the new generation will be controlled is
entirely false.> Notably, the regime's repressive actions targeting
universities will not shield it from the determination of Iranian youths
and students. These developments reveal a regime struggling to maintain
control as it approaches the anniversary of last year's uprising and the
final stages of its rule.>>
