<<Protesters Flood Zahedan Streets as Sunni Cleric Praises Iranian
People's <Awakening>
Hundreds of anti-government protestors took to the streets of Zahedan on
the eve of the first anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death in police
custody, as the Sunni Friday prayer leader of the restive southeastern
city hailed the <awakening> of the Iranian people. <Today, Iranians from
diverse backgrounds, ethnicities and religious affiliations stand
united> in their quest for fundamental changes in the country, Molavi
Abdulhamid, Iran's most prominent Sunni cleric, said in his Friday
sermon. The policies of the Islamic Republic <must undergo
transformation,> and <people's satisfaction must be prioritized,> he
also said. Local sources in Zahedan reported that the live broadcast of
Molavi's speech was interrupted due to a disruption to internet
connectivity in Sistan and Baluchistan province. Global internet
monitoring organization NetBlocks confirmed the disruption, saying that
it <continues the weekly pattern of regional internet shutdowns
targeting anti-government protests.> After the sermon, protesters took
to the streets to voice their grievances against the government and
Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, despite the deployment of many special
forces and uniformed personnel.
<I will kill whoever killed my brother> and <Either death or freedom>
were among the slogans chanted by the crowds.
Placards bore messages like <Khamenei, we will not forget Zahedan's
killings> and <Baluch, stand up once for all, either martyrdom or
freedom.>
Zahedan is the capital of Sistan and Baluchistan province, which is home
to Iran's Sunni Baluch minority of up to 2 million people. The restive
city has seen protest rallies almost every Friday since September 30 of
last year, when security forces killed nearly 100 people in the
deadliest incident in the widespread demonstrations sparked by the death
in police custody of 22-year-old Amini. In his sermon, Molavi said that
the people of Zahedan continue to demand accountability for those, <at
every level and rank,> responsible for the tragedy. The cleric also
addressed the intensifying crackdown on women who refuse to wear a
headscarf in public, saying: <No one should be killed for being
bare-headed or for not observing hijab.>
<No officer is legally permitted to engage in such actions. Protests
occur worldwide, but nowhere do they result in the killing or blinding
of protesters,> he added.>>

<<Evin Prisoners Announce Hunger Strike in Solidarity with <Uprising>
Two university students jailed in Tehran’s Evin prison have announced
they would start a hunger strike on September 16, which will mark the
first anniversary since Mahsa Amini's death in police custody. In a
statement released on social media, Ali Younesi and Amir Hossein Moradi
said that they were launching their hunger strike <in solidarity with
the uprising of the people of Iran.> <An uprising is underway, an
uprising for freedom, an uprising to dismantle any form of dictatorship,
whether it wears a crown or a turban,> they said. Five other political
and civil activists incarcerated in Evin prison - Mostafa Tajzadeh,
Saeed Madani, Hossein Razzaq, Mehdi Mahmoudian and Mohammad Najafi -
have announced their intention to join the hunger strike. Younesi and
Moradi are both students in physics at Sharif University of Technology.
At the 2017 National Astronomy Olympiad, they won the gold and silver
medals, respectively. The two students have been held in Evin prison
since their arrest in April 2020.>>

<<Iran's Streets Filled by Security Agents; Protesters' Graves under
Siege
Tension is rising in cities and towns across Iran, as the nation
prepares to mark the September 16 anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death in
police custody. A group of Tehran residents who visited Behesht-e-Zahra
cemetery on September 14 noticed a significant presence of security
personnel.
<When we arrived at plot 211, where [protester] Hamidreza Rouhi is
buried, we were struck by the large number of cars and police officers,>
one of them told IranWire. <The scene was so overwhelming that we
briefly speculated that an officer had died and his comrades were
participating in a ceremony.> According to this eyewitness, more than
100 uniformed officers surrounded Rouhi's grave. <There were so many
plainclothes officers that it was impossible to keep count,> the Tehran
resident said. <They had brought two cars resembling mobile prison
cells. We also witnessed the apprehension of some individuals.> <The
atmosphere was tense, and we hesitated to leave our vehicle. My friend
asked one of the officers why these women were being detained. In
response, the officer sternly told us to leave, warning that we might
face arrest if we stayed. No citizen is permitted to approach
Hamidreza's grave.> <Plainclothes female officers were positioned around
the area, and security agents were ubiquitous. It was prohibited to take
pictures, and the only footage we managed to shoot was a brief video
captured discreetly from the main streets during our lunch break.> <This
footage revealed a notable presence of police vans and plainclothes
female officers. Upon our return, we discovered that people were even
prevented from visiting other graves, with individuals being forcibly
removed from the resting places of their loved ones.> Another Tehran
resident described the security situation at around noon on September
14, stating, <Today, while traveling from Rahahan Square to Shahrak
Gharb, I noticed a fence in front of the 137th police station.>
<Apparently the intention was to prevent crowds and conflicts by keeping
people at a distance. Along Keshavarz Boulevard, they had placed
barriers and blocked certain areas. It's somewhat amusing that, despite
their substantial resources, power, weaponry and force, they appear so
scared of unarmed citizens.> In recent days, armed special forces and
police personnel have been patrolling the main streets of Tehran and the
nearby city of Karaj. Milad Alavi, a reporter from Shargh newspaper,
reported on September 13: <The presence of armed forces in Tehran and
Karaj's main streets has noticeably increased, and their weaponry is
openly visible.> <The speed of both landline and mobile internet has
decreased significantly, with internet providers attributing the issue
to external network problems. Using VPNs has become more challenging,>
Alavi further said on X, formerly Twitter. Local sources reported that
some streets in central Tehran have been closed and more surveillance
cameras have been installed. Similar reports emerged from other cities,
including Amini's hometown of Saqqez. According to information obtained
by IranWire, the western Kurdish city is full of security personnel,
while the Aichi cemetery, where the young woman is buried, is under
heavy surveillance. Sources said that a substantial number of special
forces have arrived in Saqqez in recent days and deployed in the city's
main streets and squares.>>Read more here |on how the regime is

<<HRW Denounces Ramped-Up Repression in Iran
Human Rights Watch (HRW) says the Iranian authorities are trying to
<impose a chokehold> on peaceful dissent to prevent public commemoration
of Mahsa Amini's death in police custody a year ago through
intimidation, arrests, prosecutions and trials of all those deemed
critical of the Islamic Republic. Ahead of the September 16 anniversary
of Amini's death, which sparked monthslong anti-establishment protests,
the authorities targeted <activists, artists, dissidents, lawyers,
academics, students, and family members of those who were killed> during
the demonstrations, the New York-based human right watchdog said in a
statement on September 15. More than 500 people were killed, including
dozens of children, and over 22,000 others were unlawfully detained
across the country in the state crackdown on the nationwide protests,
activists say. Following unfair trials, the judiciary has handed down
stiff sentences, including the death penalty, to protesters. Amini's
death has become <the symbol of the government's systematic oppression
of women, injustice and impunity,> Tara Sepehri Far, senior Iran
researcher at HRW, said, adding that the authorities <can't erase the
mounting frustration, louder calls for fundamental change, and the
resistance and solidarity in Iranian society in the face of mounting
repression.> HRW said it had compiled reports of outspoken family
members of at least 36 people killed or executed during the protests who
have been interrogated, arrested, prosecuted and/or sentenced to time in
prison over the past month. The authorities have also targeted lawyers
working for or supporting the rights of protesters or their families.
Saleh Nikbakht, the lawyer who represents Amini's family, was charged
with <propaganda against the state> over interviews he gave to domestic
and foreign media. HRW said that at least 27 university instructors who
were critical of government policies were <dismissed, suspended, forced
to retire, or their contracts were not renewed since late July. The
actual number is most likely higher, the group added. And according to
the Volunteer Committee to Follow-Up on the Situation of Detainees, at
least 161 university students have been subjected to disciplinary
measures over the past year for their activism related to the protests.
Among the artists who faced reprisals, arrests and prosecution, singer
and composer Mehdi Yarahi was arrested last month after the release of a
song in support of the protest movement. Toomaj Salehi, a popular
rapper, was sentenced to six years and three months in prison on the
charge of <corruption on Earth.> The authorities have also responded to
the widespread defiance of the compulsory headscarf by <ramping up their
efforts to impose the dress code on women, using a range of tactics,
including legal summonses, new legislative initiatives, and increasing
pressure on private business to impose hijab rules,> HRW said. Iranian
lawmakers are currently reviewing a 70-article draft Hijab and Chastity
Bill that envisions additional fines and dismissal from job and
educational opportunities for those appearing in public without a head
covering. HRW urged all delegations of UN member states meeting Iranian
counterparts during the annual UN General Assembly leaders' week in New
York (September 18-26) to <raise the plight of activists and put it at
the center of their engagement.> <The international community was vocal
in supporting the protest movement when people took to the streets in
Iran last year,> Sepehri Far said. <But achieving the rights and
equality the protesters demanded is the work of generations, not months.
Those who spoke out should now focus on supporting activists, artists,
academics, lawyers, students, families of those killed, members of civil
society and all those paying a very steep price for their ongoing
resistance to oppression.> >>

<<Security Boosted around Amini Family's Home in Saqqez
Saqqez - Iranian armed forces have been heavily deployed around the home
of Mahsa Amini's parents in the western Kurdish city of Saqqez amid
increased measures to prevent new protests on the first anniversary of
the young woman’s death in police custody. In University Street, the
main thoroughfare in the neighborhood where the Amini family lives,
local residents reported that security forces are stationed every few
meters. There is a heavy presence of special forces personnel on foot,
motorcycles and in cars across Amini's hometown, and water cannons have
been deployed in some areas. Military personnel are positioned on top of
Tepeh Qawkh, a hill overlooking Saqqez, while local residents witnessed
a surge in helicopter activity over the city.>>
